Those who made the trip last week and again today must surely agree that this performance was 100% better. And those diehards deserved to witness a team performance that warmed the cockles.
Without picking out any particular aspect of our play, fewer passes went astray than of late & everyone seemed to have grown in confidence & body strength ( what has GL been putting in their Bovril ?) We just seemed a more solid unit in general.
The 2 newbies performed well IMO , especially our 'keeper who handled confidently when called upon. Maybe it's no coincidence that both TBH and our Beast were pretty much back to their early season best with him behind them.
My MOM was young Jordan who worked his socks off, bless him. He seems to get on with the job in hand regardless of the chaos that surrounds him at times and the fragmented dressing room we have been made aware of. He's fast becoming a particular favourite of mine.
So, a clean sheet, a point well earned and an atmosphere of positivity in the away end today. Maybe it is too soon to judge our new manager but it would appear that he has instilled some much needed belief in our lads. And it certainly looked as though they knew what their individual roles were this time.
The task now is to keep it tight at the back whilst creating more chances going forward - why don't you state the obvious, Fanny ? Tony Watt Watt Watt has a big part to play & I'm certain it's one he relishes if his body language both on & off the ball is anything to go by. And having just read that Katrien is hinting at A N Other joining the squad, could this be our missing link ?
Another week on the training ground will hopefully build on those positives seen today & increase the understanding between manager and players. Rotherham will be a huge test for all concerned next Saturday but another strong showing from our lads and ideally a win will go a long way towards mending some of the fences that have recently been bulldozed. The fans will need to play their part though from the first to the final whistle - our remaining home games could be the difference between survival and the unmentionable.
Let's wipe the slate clean. Give ALL those wearing The Shirt as much encouragement as possible. And support GL.
Keep the faith and we could start to see the return of OUR Charlton.
Not there this week. So relieved at a point and what sounded like a decent shift by all accounts. Whilst enjoying the sensation after last week's debacle, for me the test is next week, can we beat Rotherham? We really need to be and I hope that corner has been turned. Glad Jordan put in a shift (as ever) and I believe he will be our future captain one day, should we keep him! COYRs PS Great to have Redmidland back on the match thread, feels like Charlton again.
I'm well pleased and this hopefully gives Luzon something to build on. We're crying out for an attacking creative midfielder. I would say that's our greatest need now.
Agreed. Attacking midfielder for me is above a target man on the list of priorities.
Bet the people who predicted another 5-0 are feeling stupid.......
Exactly and there were so many of them, 4-0, 5-0 etc. Stay positive I said and predicted a 0-1 win so close and we could have nicked it, even Le Tissieur said so.
Charlton will need to defend all season long and win their six pointers cause they don't have the offensive creative players to score many goals. Can't see real money being made available to the manager so expect another loan or free deal as the rest. Well done for stopping the rot.
The tactics were a pretty rigid 4-4-2, which was well organised and never lost its shape. The main difference to previous games is that Buyens played much more offensively, with Veljkovic as the holding midfielder. I thought that Buyens had a much better game in this role than when he plays deeper. Veljkovic settled in very well and looked accomplished on the ball breaking up play and playing some simple passes and also longer range playing it out wide. Solly had his best game of the season, defending well and pushing forward when he could. Cousins also put in a great shift, never giving Wolves midfielders any time on the ball. Passing was much improved, and although the posession stats don't look great, we at least seemed to connect the midfield with the forwards with some well placed passes. I think this was due to the whole team playing higher up the pitch, with the banks of 4-4-2 closer together. New keeper looked assured with his handling and made one well timed sliding save at the feet of an onrushing Wolves forward. Distribution generally sound, but Dean Keily school of goal kicking, as some others have commented on. The whole team appeared to have more energy and togetherness, with far less moaning and shoulder shrugging. Team spirit seemed to have returned. Finally a mention for the Great Western pub, proper football boozer. Lovely real ale, smell of the coal fires. Got into the pub at 12.45 and it was heaving. Talked to two different sets of knowledgable Wolves fans, who even helped to carry our drinks from the bar! Finished off by going for a curry in the town centre after the game. Bring on Rotherham!
Veljkovic has been signed to do the Poyet role....a sweeper in front of the defence (he's also an option at CH if we get an injury). Buyens is a good passer of the ball and is obviously going to be more of a danger now that he can play further forward (and his inability to tackle or block becomes less of an issue).
The hard part will be integrating Igor and Watt into the same line-up. So we may have to play a narrow 4-4-2 v Rotherham (Harriot to drop out and Cousins on the left). Or we go 3-5-2....which might mean Fox to CH and Wiggins or Harriot to wing-back.
In terms of team spirit, yesterday was a good start but let's see how the team react to conceding a goal.
PS....maybe there will be a new centre-forward so that Igor can be sub. His best games since his injury have been off the bench.
Just had another thought thanks to my remaining grey cell ...
Watched the Cup highlights last night and rejoiced in Bradford's performance at Stamford Bridge( of Sighs) Great stuff, Parky !!!
The player who impressed me the most was Jon Stead - a forward we've come up against over the years & who must be one of the Peter Pan's in the current game.
If memory serves me right, he held the ball up in the area before playing a simple ball to the scorer of one goal and was involved in a similar move for at least one other successful strike. I thought he was very impressive and contributed in no small part to his Club's fantastic victory.
My question is, do we have a player who can perform this role for us ?

I thought exactly the same when I watched that. Interesting that Huddersfield are so confident in their forward line that he's on loan to Bradford. Precisely the sort of player we've been missing since January last year.
Wasn't at the game but by listening on cafc player it seems like having a proper CDM made a big difference... This is what I've been saying for most of the year! I even said something along those lines in pre season...
A CDM allows buyens to play his natural game and be more creative slightly further up the pitch and make use of his range of passing rather than highlight his lesser atributes like tracking back and tackling. This in turn relieves the pressure on Gudmundsson as previously he was our only creative outlet and so was targeted by oppositions to nullify that threat! It's also sounds as though he was effective at dropping in and covering for the defence which has previously been lacking.. This allows the fullbacks to get forward more and overlap and then you will see the benefits of having inverted wingers.
This one acquisition whilst may not solve all our problems.. We still need a hold up striker and a winger and more depth slash options elsewhere.. but I will change the way we play and can have a huge effect!

I predicted 6-0. Don't arf feel a chump... wish I was as clever as you two obviously are!
May I give you an example? Home to Blackburn after three minutes: long throw in to our six-yard-box, attacker rushes in with a deft back-header and his mate hammers it in to the net. I love it: pure and true.
In the second-half, the man winds himself up for a long throw, ball poised over head, leaning back in to the crowd. The whole stadium fell silent. He ran to the touchline - and plopped it three feet to his mate.
We are utterly hopeless. Our midfielders can't trap the ball, pass, or move. Against Brighton we had four strikers for 45 minutes - and it took Solly, a defender, to burst in and shudder the bar.

What, in heaven's name, are they doing?
@Viewfinder, the posts under your name are always variable and occassionally very random. What is the above post all about ? You are talking about the Blackburn game under a different coach a couple of weeks ago. It is either you have a few people posting under your name, multiple personalities, varying results of many glasses of red wine and the other side. Agree with some of your posts but some of them are way over the top.

Did you notice any significant changes in tactics yesterday? Were we still zonal marking?

"There were some fairly obvious differences between Luzon's style & that of his predecessor.
The back line play higher up the pitch than under Bob Peeters. They also clear the ball quicker and no longer mark zonally at corners. "
And the players definitely seemed more comfortable on the ball.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, but he's been on loan to Bournemouth for the past 12 months.....
No
But we need one definitely

Did not go but my Dad went and said was a solid showing with a lot of fight in us.
However I am worried were this next goal is coming from for us.
1 goal in 6 is a major concern.
