  • [cite]Posted By: Chris_from_Sidcup[/cite]For what it's worth Carter i can totally see where you're coming from. Fair do's if you were speeding on a stretch of road that was a danger to others (ie. outside a school as has been said), but to be done for being 6mph over the speed limit at half 6 in the morning is a bit much. I always thought drivers were given a few mph leeway anyway but obviously not.
Out of interest where was it you were caught?

    Bluebell hill in Chatham
  • These are two seperate arguements. If the police are inefficient then that has to be dealt.

We can not justify breaking the rules when it suits us because the police do not deal with other crimes in the way we want.

As for "what about when the speed limit is clearly set in order to make people speed, You have eyes to read the signs and a foot to push the brake. If you are not able to do one or both then you are not fit to drive.
  • [cite]Posted By: Carter[/cite]I didn't want them to actually attend and waste manpower, all I wanted was a crime number for the insurance! The wee shites who broke in would have been long gone.

And I also appreciate they cannot be everywhere all the time, but surely they can be more efficiently deployed? A speed camera outside every school would stop the speeding and then the onus has to be on parents, teachers and road safety officers to educate children in road safety.

when i had stuff nicked i went into my local police station filled in a form and got a crime number there and then. also when our head office here got broken into, we just called up the local station and got a crime number and they didn't attend either.

i do think that there should be more active police officers tho, dealing with these things, and don't understand the community support officer role when police stations up and down the country have been closed to make way for housing. lee green and shooters hill for example.

I only see community support officers in central london walking up and down and giving tourists directions.

You've never driven above the speed limit then Henry? If not fair enough and I salute you.

Just for my own peace of mind, could anyone tell me how many accidents have been caused on the A2 by people slamming the brakes on everytime they see an average speed camera?
  • I supsect Henry has, but if he got caught, it would be fair enough?
  • i do agree that putting a speed camera slap bang outside a school is not a good idea. as soon as people are past the white road markers they burn off again faster than ever!

they do it on the a20, and if you drive at 40mph the whole way down from sidcup to world of leather round about, you get flashed at in the outside lane for not going faster than 40, but then the red lights infront of you come on when the cameras are coming up.

Fair point Suz, but the car had been broken into, I live 6 miles away from the police station and didn't fancy the walk or driving and having to leave unattended a car with batwings for doors whilst I filled out forms.
  • As it happens I've never been caught for speeding or had points on my license. Yes, I have driven over the speed limit in the past but I'm not proud of it or am I going to try to justify it or argue against the punishment should I get caught.

I try not to speed and when I see a sign I slow down to that speed because I don't want a fine or the extra insurance costs but mainly as I don't want to risk an accident to myself or others.
  • fair enough, everyone is different. i'm not having a pop at you, I do understand your frustrations and things shouldn't be this difficult

shame we have to live in a world with evil people thieving and smashing up cars.

Probably like most of the law-abiding majority then mate. It's just unfortunate law-breakers that get caught.

Fair play for being honest though

One of their favourite haunts. Must be a burger/donut van nearby.
  • Is this the bit where I admit to speeding this morning?
  • [cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]Is this the bit where I admit to speeding this morning?

riding on the pavement and jumping red lights are also against the law.
  • I was doing 33 down the hill in Greenwich Park, don't jump red light or ride on pavements
  • Do you have a speedo on your bike?
  • yeah, little wireless speedo, Time, speed, distance on it.

How much? want one for Joe.
  • £12 from Decathlon at Surrey Quays, about the best place to buy cycling stuff from in London.

Never been but my wife got her new bike from the decathlon at lakeside. I will be checking it out in the summer for new boots and footie kit for Joe so will get the speedo then.

  • It's a top shop, loads of stuff imported in from France, so usually a bit cheaper especially on the cycling/Football stuff.
  • I never wear sports gear but told it has some cheap t-shirts etc so may be worth a visit.
  • I think they even sell black football boots for kids as well
  • I can understand frustration when you get caught doing something which appears trivial in comparison to other seemingly unpunished misdemeanours.

But speeding cars kill people and to the best of my knowledge having stuff knicked from your motor or your home doesn't.

I've been the victim of how speeding cars can wreck your life and of also having my car broken into. I don't think you really need me to tell you which one effected me the most.

Of course in a perfect world, there would be enough Old Bill to catch all of our criminals, but we don't live in such a world. So, which would you prefer the police to crack down on? Morons putting a brick through your car window, or morons driving around not giving a shit if they kill people or not?

If that means that we get done when being only 6mph over the limit, then it's a price we should all be willing to pay, in my slightly biased opinion.
  • fact about speeding is if you are constantly monitoring your speed because you are sared of exceeding the speed limit, you more are more likely not paying enough attention to the road and driving safely.

    Well said

You'll forgive me razil if I say that's utter bollox!

Next you'll be telling me that you don't bother looking in your mirrors because it stops you concentrating on the road, or looking out for kids at a school crossing makes you hit the lollipop lady!!!!
  • I think what he's stating that if you are worrying about getting caught speeding you will be paying undue attention to the speedometer.
  • agree. rubbish.

if you're not capable of checking your constant speed with regularly to see if you are speeding, then you're not a very good driver full stop and should not be on the road.

every time there is a hazard, parked car, junction, pedestrian etc, you should lookin your RV mirror anyway. thats rubbish to suggest that could cause an accident.

Do you have any research to back up what you say is an fact or is that just an opinion.

My personal view is that I need to be looking around me and in mirrors constantly when driving in town. On open roads less so but in both cases have time to look at the speedo.
