Dyson, the Steve Jobs of the vacuum cleaner world .. and as with Apple, Dyson products look beautiful but are very expensive, a case perhaps of style trumping utility.

I think that's a slightly unfair comparison. They may be top dollar but a Dyson has great utility - and they last. We've got - well it's Mrs cafcfan's really of course! - a DC02 from 1995. It's still going strong. Dyson only stopped supporting it with parts/servicing in 2011 but it's never needed anything and generic filters are still available. What's more, if you contact them and trade in your old DC01 or DC02 they'll give you a hefty discount off a new one. There are other examples of great companies that make superb products and offer great customer support. Dualit is another British one and Samsonite are quite happy to send spare wheels, etc for their hard shell cases FOC even though they are very, very long in the tooth indeed. For these reasons when I need a new cleaner/toaster/suitcase I know where I'll be buying.

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

If only Apple could say the same don't you think?
There is a lot in what you say. However I have two Electrolux standard bag vacuum cleaners dating from the early 1980s. Both are easy to use, are lightweight, still efficiently picking up the dust, need minimum servicing, only the occasional bag renewal and filter cleaning/replacement and when new cost a fraction of what you probably paid for your Dyson back in the 1990s.
My comments regarding style and substance remain valid. For example and slightly off topic, (nothing to do with dust or computing), one can purchase an electric kettle costing a fiver or one costing sixty quid or more .. both do the same job using the same method, and that is boiling water

You could say that about anything, what about cars a Ford Fiesta and a Ferrari do the same thing in getting you from A to B, you pay more for quality and probably the name in some cases.

I think you'd also have to consider electricity usage which I believe Dyson cleaners come out on top. It might be a heavy investment up front but the savings come later.

Can't believe you lot are discussing the merits of a vacuum cleaner.
    A new low.

You are right, I am humbled. It's bad being described as being at a new low. Especially when the person insulting you seems to specialise in starting RIP thread for people you've never heard of.......

To comment on both must be a new all time low!

It would be no good if he bought Roland out of Charlton. He would probably buy us a new sweeper when we need a striker.

OK if we are going in this direction I'm pretty sure he would take us to the cleaners.

Yeah but Dyson is famous for being bagless.... so he wouldn't appoint Karen Brady as CEO.

Dyson are far better than their competitors.

We have the DC59 animal as we are in a flat (749 sqft) and short on storage space, in 20 minutes you can vacuum most of the dog hair up and get your flat looking like it's been hoovered with a high powered upright.

    I love it.

If you think Dysons are expensive, you should try owning one of these

Got myself a robotic vacuum, now I sit back with a beer and watch the thing working away for 3 hours or more until it gets tired and puts itself back on the charger. Best investment I ever made!

Next invention should be a vacuum that gets you a beer.

I think they can be found in certain bars in the far east.

Are these the ones that fire ping pong balls too?

You'll have to ask Mr Landowner Dyson about that.
I've heard he likes a little oriental.

    Dear Dazzler

Never had yourself a Miele (cat and dog) vaccum? done the dysons and the Vax to death. But with cream carpets throughout 3 Sheps and a slob of a husband it's the only way forward.
    :)
    Best wishes
