There was nothing wrong with the ref today. Harriott made a violent challenge, and the ref was quick to impose the laws. Do you remember the people's hero Bradley Pritchard, crashing in with studs-up in our first game last season, away at Bournemouth? Straight red, and rightly so. Pritchard is now a sub at Leyton Orient.
The 'handballs' today - none of them were intentional, and all referees want the game to flow. There was one move in the first half when we had possession and were called back for our own free-kick - that was something the ref will look at again. The yellow-card when our man was tripped on the edge of the box - it was close, but there were other Cardiff defenders, holding the line.
There was a comical throw-in that exercised the East Stand. Our man advanced ten yards, threw the ball and was called up by the ref, pointing at the right place. He went back, puffed out his cheeks, ran another ten yards, threw it... The ref whistled, and gave it to Cardiff: foul throw - quite right.
Excellent stuff. We have a free-kick twenty yards out: much dispute. The ref paces out ten yards: stomp, stomp, stomp, and points at the ground. The wall of eight Cardiff men shuffles with crossed-handed, balls-protecting obedience, like primary-school kids under a headmaster threatening detention.
All in place. The whole stadium falls silent. Peep. Our man steps up - and sends it wide.
Viewfinder, I will disagree with your interpretation of the ref. the red card was correct but as for hand balls? Well we got punished for a handball yet they had at least two exactly the same but we're not awarded. In fact one the hand ball decisions against us was awarded when the ref was not even looking at our player (this was right in front of me)
You to are correct about the east stand throw in debacle but he never, not once told them to stop stealing yards when it was there turn, in fact the amount of times there long throw specialist threw the ball and stepped over the line was unbelievable. He was also oblivious to the time wasting tactics that they employed.
As I said previously , I do not normally critiscritise refs as it is the hardest job in football but he was awful. Even a few Cardiff fans outside couldn't believe how bad he was.
What are your thoughts on the constant time wasting that went unpunished?
How about the fact their striker impeded Etheridge just about every time he had the ball in his hands, in fact one time stopping him from kicking properly but the ref missed it because he was too busy laughing at a joke by one of the Cardiff players so was looking the wrong way?
Why did he let Cardiff steal yards on throw ins but not us?
Why did he give Cardiff the handballs but exactly the same incidents went unpunished when performed by Cardiff?
I have not seen a replay of CH sending off but enough people have said it was correct so seems a good call by him there and Tuc's incident was never a sending off for their player granted.
He was awful, you even state refs want a free flowing game, well allowing one team to constantly waste time from the 35th minute certainly does not help this.
Viewfinder, there was plenty wrong with the ref. Far from letting the game flow he blew when he could let play go and he let play go on when he should have blown. Although I agree with you about the throw in, east stand second half, (he actually made his point 3 times, once to one Charlton player and then twice to the second player), Cardiff's throw ins were not once asked to moved to a correct position. Solly got booked for what? Cardiff player (last man or not) pulls our player down, not even bothering to make a fair challenge, in clear goal scoring opportunity gets yellow card when a red would not have been hash or incorrect. Also from the free kick you said it was wide, it almost went in. The goalkeeper was rooted, beaten all ends up with ball going wide after hitting the post. Well taken kick.

Had the wall been the full 10 yards that he paced out, it might have gone in, piss poor reffing.
Tucudean wasn't tripped he was pulled back. Then the ref tells Gudmunson to put the ball on the correct spot where the offence happens ( fair enough ) yet can't be bothered to pull the wall back the necessary 10 yards and you wonder why he was getting abuse? Doesn't matter if the free kick ends up up in row z as a ref you have to get the basics right. I lose count of the amount of times foul throws occur in a game you might as well scrap the rule and let the throw be taken in whatever fashion the players want to take it. And you don't endear yourself to the crowd if you put a comforting arm around the keeper when he is off the pitch feigning injury and we are trying to get on with the game. It's a rare thing to see a thread on here dedicated to how bad a particular official was but Mick Russell certainly deserved his own one for being so bad.
Viewfinder - the law states that if a player denies an opposition player a goal scoring opportunity, then he will be sent off.
If GT hadn't been brought down he would have had the opportunity to have a shot at goal. Yes, he may have missed it, but he would have had the opportunity.
It should have been a red card, even though other Cardiff defenders were closing in.
Viewfinder - all we ask is for consistency. If you ignore one teams handballs then you should ignore the other, not give all against one team and not the other! Ditto the throw ins - make them all be taken from the right place, not allow one team to gain ten yards every time and blow up for a foul throw if the other team does it once!
Well done for finding a view view finder, no matter how out of step with reality it is,
the ref was sub standard and the club in their post match statement stating they may considering marking his performance down suggests to me that I and most others have a point and that there was a problem with Mr Russell's performance.
Trouble is... Yes you can say that Cardiff had the right to time waste with their throw ins and had the right to take their time on each occasion.
The thing is I pay my money to watch Football being played NOT to see someone just standing there holding the ball or standing over it (Have the same feelings when we time waste), at the end of the day its the refs job to ensure the game continues to flow in that sense and he failed
There was just something off about the ref's manner. I can't put my finger on it. Sure a lot if his eccentricities were, by the letter of the law, correct. But they were just so OTT and inconsistent. I had a great view of Calum's tackle (sorry that just sounds wrong) and it was a red card but Reffy boy just couldn't wait to get the card out. Plus, as other have said, the overly friendly or overly informal gestures. It wasn't just incompetence. It felt wrong.
The Cardiff keeper should have been booked for kicking the ball into the crowd after Charlton's goal. He knew what he was doing, another example of wasting time. Also did anybody else notice a towel appeared on the avertising hoarding by the Cardiff dug out so their player could waste more time drying the ball.
One of the most bizarre refereeing perfomances i have ever witnessed. I agree with all the comments on here bar 1 (viewfinder - what you on) Most i had forgotten.
To cap it all he had his arms round all the Cardiff players all afternoon and kept laughing and shrugging his shoulders at his own bizarre decisions. And can anyone tell me where i can buy the magic spray used on Gunnarsons leg, he went from a broken leg to running up the wing all within about 2 mins.
Soon as Tucadean was brought down i said he would bottle sending him off, and he did.
Mr Russel hope we never see you again - you idiot.

As someone who has been vehemently opposed the use of electronic technology in football, I am so frustrated by the continuous time wasting in time matches that I'd like to see some technology introduced to help stop it. I've long said that there should be an independent time keeper to free the referee up from dealing this nonsense. What I'd also suggest is a simple time recording system that could be run on a pc, tablet or phone. Every second of stoppage time should be categorised as either Neutral (goals, genuine injuries etc.), Home Wastage or Away Wastage (where one or other team has been messing about). Where possible, these times would be displayed on the big screen for all to see. At the end of the match the timekeeper gives each manager the choice whether they want to play the time wasted by the opposition or not, this would be added to the neutral wastage that would be played automatically. That way, time wasting would become and advantage to the opposition and would die out in no time (just to make sure of this, I might go as far as to say that they could be offered twice the amount of time wasted).

It was the same with the goalkeeper.
Playing around with the advertising boarding when he knew he was out of position and stopped us taking a quick throw-in. Once the ref had pulled the way back to check on him, he was up and on his feet, running back towards his goal.
They were a joke and I hope they go on a poor run of form and get relegated.

Ive always felt time wasting should be harshly dealt with... You get 5secs (No more, no less) to take a Throw in / corner / Goal-Kick... should you take too long then its given to the opposition, speed the game up not slow it down
They also took an age taking corners, and the amount of times a ball went out for a corner from a corner, and we had to wait two mins whilst their player had to jog from one side to the other to take it.
I fear Viewfinder is just one of those people who have to say something is black when everyone can clearly see it is white. I think they call it 'attention seeking'

Could be right. I on the other hand suspect acid and whisky might be involved.
Killer Hales and Mike Flanagan are always intelligent, quick, tough and ruthless. Now you admire Callum Harriott and Joe Pigott - and when they are given the slightest nudge you scream: "FOUL!".
We have the wrong manager - and the most proud, conceited, deluded supporters.

We have some wierd and wonderful supporters too. Takes all sorts eh? By the way, the 70's are back that way my friend......
On top of everything else mentioned, when he was counting out the 10 paces- and let Cardiff off with 9 - he appeared to raise his fist at the covered end, as they chanted abuse at him.
Any ref can make mistakes, he was guilty of multiple bad judgements when he had time to think about them. That's what made his performance so appalling.

Sorted that for you.
We live in different times.
Unfortunately you appear to have "lived" a little too much in the 70s and have subsequently fried your brain.
Of course the other explanation is that you are an attention seeker who posts the polar opposite of how the majority see things to get a reaction.

The kind of performance where at the end a manager should be able to be critical of an inept refereeing display without the risk of punishment.
Yesterday's was the first time I have genuinely thought one was corrupt
The linos were ruled by the referee on all decisions so much that they were watching him instead of the game
He would have found an offside from somewhere if Igor had scored
