As a boy, my grandfather once told me the story of Christmas one hundred years ago.
"Believe it or not, lad", he began, "a group of us Charlton supporters headed towards Blackheath with our football boots tied round our neck. There, we met a group of Millwall supporters and played a 23 players a side game against our old rivals. We used beer barrels for goal posts. The game ended 17-17 and at the end of the game we hugged each other and went to the Hare & Billet for several ales. The group of Chatlton fans then left staggering slightly towards The Standard while the Millwall fans headed off in the direction of Deptford. We waved to each other wishing our rivals a happy Christmas as we went our separate ways. I knew it would never happen again and we shed tears as we trudged home in the snow".
