It Ain't Over Yet

Yes, yes, I know it was a mediocre performance and a disappointing result but all is not lost yet, not by a long chalk.

Lets' look at our rivals remaining games......

FULHAM: Blew their last real chance of 3 point today, they have Arsenal (a) and Liverpool (h) from which they might gain a point and then a tough final game at Boro. They could easily LOSE all three remaining games and finish on just 36 points. Moreover, if Arsenal or Liverpool (preferably both) deliver big wins then Fulham's GD gets made worse than ours which is worth a point in itself.

WIGAN: No surprise they lost today, but you'd think that they will get four points from their two home games against the Spammers and Boro which would give them 39 points and safety.

SHEFF UTD: In good form and both Watford and Wigan to come at home which should be at least four points which would take them to 39 points and safety.

WEST HAM: Have done well to stay in it for as long as they have but Wigan will be too strong for them at JJB and although they might beat Bolton at home they then have a nightmare at Old Trafford on the final day which means they really can't get more than 35 points, maybe 36 if they get a point at Wigan. Of course, if West Ham win or draw at Wigan then that is also OK because Wigan are counting on that game as a three point cert.

So, its between us and Fulham now, unless there are some really freak results from Wigan and the Blades.

I know we are deflated but we have to look at what is still VERY MUCH POSSIBLE. We have a slightly easier run-in than Fulham who now have only one win in EIGHTEEN GAMES so are hardly full of confidence either and that's not a great way to approach games against Arsenal and Liverpool.

A win today would have been great and we nearly did it but a point at Ewood and then a home win against Spurs with their leaky defence would give us 37 points which might be enough as long as Fulham don't sneak another win.

Also, don't forget that if we do get to 37 points by the final day then Boro could still be in the mire themselves and will need to beat Fulham at home to ensure they don't get dragged down on the final day.

There is still everything to play for.

  • I agree with pretty much all you say. I would add this. We have missed out on winning three winnable games in Reading and Sheff U at home and Citeh away. I think winning games which you are expected to win at this stage of the season is very hard.

We now have two games which would not have been on many peoples lists as ones to win. We are going into these games as underdogs. We played our best football for four games against Everton. We will play better against both Blackburn and Spurs. I guarantee it.

I'm up for Ewood. Win there and it really is game on.
  • I agree Bing, today was always going to be a really big ask and you saw from the West Ham result that it can be easier to get a result against a non-struggling side because there is less tension in the game. It sounds like Fulham were very lucky to get a point against Blackburn as well....

I just really feel that we are due a sneaky away win, we could have got one at Man City or Everton and I feel that we might get it up there because Rovers don't really have much to play for now given they are seven points off Europe.
  • We never get anything at Ewood and struggle against the big physical northern teams...I fear Spurs attack will rip us to pieces...so we are down...today was the biggest disappointment of all.....
  • "We never get anything at Ewood...."

Funny that because I can remember at least four glorious wins up there in the FAC and Premiership!!!

As for the Spurs game, don't forget that they have only won THREE away games all year and have had a very tough season so could be getting heavy legged by that stage. Jol played a weakened side against Wigan away and might do the same against us.

This is nowwhere near over yet.
  • Not over yet, but I can't see us staying up.
  • One narrow win and the picture changes completely.

I cannot believe that the MSM have not picked out Fulham as being bang in trouble with Arsenal and Liverpool to come....
  • i was feeling pretty flat at full time, but as usual a text from my dad a supporter of 60 years who has seen it all reminded me that there are games left and points to be won. ok so we've only got one win all season away (so far), but that can change. i can remember a few seasons ago when we played swindon at home. we had won twelve (12) in a row, were 15-18 points clear and they were rock bottom without a win in eons and no away wins all season. you know that they beat us 1-0. that result will do for me at ewood and anfield. i'll be there next week with all you other lifers. come on you reds. i feel a new thread coming on.

They only won because Dean Keily is superstitious!
  • Today's point might yet prove very important, but there's only so long we can rely on other results falling for us.
The others have got more points in the bag have got their destinies in their own hands.

Fulham will be thinking they could sneak a win over Liverpool, and will much more fancy their chances of getting something at Boro on the final day than we will of getting a result at Anfield.

Blackburn will be very tough, and Spurs (going for Europe) will be looking at us as a chance for three points.

For all the positive talk from the management and players, we seem to have hit the wall at just the wrong time and are going to have put in two very good performances just to keep it going until the final day.

Haven't we been tanked 4-1 the last 2 visits to Blackburn....lets face it we are not good enough....but come next week I'll be watching the game here but to be truthful can't watch too much more of the garbage played today......

  • Disagree about Fulham. Liverpool have an almost impregnable defence and Fulham have scored only 17 goals at home all season, the lowest in the Premiership. I can't see anything but defeats from the next two games for Fulham which means they go to Boro on the last day needing a result.

That scenario is tricky because Boro may still need points themselves, we just don't know.

Either way, Fulham are on a shocking run and have only won once away in the league all season so they are not really looking like pulling out a shock win whereas we are at least looking like sneaking a result here or there.

Also, don't forget, Blackburn have already lost SEVEN home games and have had long runs in the UEFA and FAC.

We still have a chance but we need a win. If we win against Blackburn. Its really game on against the Spuds. If we go down we go down. Nobody would have given us a prayer in December. We now need one win and a draw and were still in there with a good chance. Two wins and were up. Blackburn isn't going to be easy but we've already beaten them once this season. I'm going to Liverpool whatever happens.

    APRWA!!!!

    COME ON!!
  • We need 5 points now and going to Liverpool on the last day is not good- Lets hope their minds are on a C/L Final.

Sheffield Utd are safe now i feel given their run in.

Fulham are the team to catch and we need them to get no more than 1 point from Arsenal, Liverpool and Middlesborough.

bookies have us 4/11 to be relegated and Fulham 11/4.
  • What we really need is the Arse to really turn on the burners and give Fulham a real smashing, 5-0 or something would be great to really demoralise them.
The Arse have only lost once at home all year so there is little fear of them dropping points but it would be great if they could just click into gear like they did against us.
  • Glad I ain't got my Blackburn tickets yet coz I reckon it's just gonna be a long trip for you lot to see the fat lady sing.

I don't believe in miracles and that's what we need.
  • I'm away in spain for a golf break, only day we don't play is Saturday,so I will drown my sorrows.Sorry but the last time we went down we got in a great position and only won 1 game in our last 8 games. This is a bit like deja vu
  • Keep listening to the Klaxons song 'It's not over yet' that soon get's me thinking positive.

BDL should have played it after today's game.

I am sorry that you feel this way. We do not need miracles. We need a win. We need to score one more goal than Blackburn and then get another point or two. It's entirely your choice but by not going to Blackburn, you may miss a season saving performance. I know how I'd feel if I missed it. So come on, get yourself a ticket.

    ............

I'd take a 2-0 win for the Arse, a team that takes a drubbing often comes out and plays much better the following week, and often bounces back with an unexpected result. A goal in either half would be fine.
  • You are pissing against the wind lads - we are down and deservedly so - if you can't beat Sheff Utd at home then maybe we should just take the inevitable.

Until it is mathematically impossible I'll still hope but can't see it I really can;t

    Or Watford, or fulham
  • Just wanted to say that the last time I made it to Ewood we became Football league Champions.

Over? The fat lady may be warming up but I've got a gag for her!!

    Keep the faith.
  • Remember AFKA saying about West Bom coming to us two years ago in the last chance saloon with 3,000 fans and they stuffed us 4-1 as we had nothing to play for. Blackburn have nothing to play for and have lost 7 (onlyl Wigan and West Ham have lost more) home matches. With the backing of 4,000 fans we can win and the picture will change again. I remain positive someone will drop below us before the end of the season just not sure who!!!
  • Yes, but West Brom were playing us, and virtually any 11 men with basic foot and eye coordination were able to take points off us at the end of a season.

Blackburn and Spurs are decent sides us, so they're not going to roll over and give us anything. Mark Hughes doesn't strike me as the sort of person to let that happen, and Martin Jol is going to be desperate to get back into the UEFA Cup.

The only reason WBA did us 4-1 was El Karkouri being sent off after about 20 minutes on a very hot sunny day.

A fresh Earnshaw exploited 10 sets of tiring legs to get a hatrick in the last 15-20 minutes.

We would have won that game with 11 men as we were the better side until the sending off.
  • The thing to consider with both Blackburn and Spurs is that both will concede goals. Neither game is likely to end up 0-0 with there respective defensive records and both are beatable.
  • Blackburn and Spurs are good teams. Yes they may concede goals but we're not exactly creating bundles of chances are we? I too fear we've blown it by only getting 3 points from Man City, Reading, Everton and Sheff Utd. Let's be honest we were all looking to get at least 6 or 7 points. Added to that our away form is the worst in the league along with Watford. Football is a funny old game though and stranger things have happened and it'd be just like us to go and nick a win at blackburn.

Bloody hell, mate. That's most unlike you. Next thing you'll be saying is I ain't renewing my season ticket.

We only need to take one more chance than Blackburn = 3 points. Can we do it..... why not?

And as you've just said: "Football is a funny old game though and stranger things have happened and it'd be just like us to go and nick a win at blackburn".

    Exactly.
  • Us to do Blackburn and Wham and Fulham to lose their next two games.

We beat Spurs, live on TV to secure our safety (albeit without a massive defeat for us at Anfield or a massive win for Fulham at Boro).

I've forseen it and a pitch invasion may happen (i do not condone these actions)
