CLUB EVENTS & A CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH I WOULD LIKE TO ORGANISE

After reading all the recent posts about the Back to the Valley dinner, I was kind of surprised how little the club actually seems to make from events in its own stadium. In the last 2 years I have supported Valentine events, darts tournaments, dinners etc thinking I'm giving more to the club than just the price of a season ticket and a few away games here and there - which makes money for the opposition anyway. I really do not want to hear that they charge these same extortionate prices for events such as the Upbeats and hope they don't. But that's not what I want to discuss - just thought I'd add my views on that while on here.

Anyway reason I mention the Upbeats is that I have this ambitious plan to see if I could get a game going with Lashings Football XI to raise funds for charity and though haven't approached the club in any way I felt they might be supportive of this. I got the idea after hearing about Lashings at Bromley Cricket Club, and then from seeing the brilliant work that has been done with the Upbeats. Because of my book I have built up a few good media connections recently, and would hopefully be able to get some of them involved. I've already talked to a few and some have been open to involvement if this happened.

At this stage it's just a very basic idea and I am waiting to hear back from Lashings, hence at this stage it's just an idea and NOTHING IS CONFIRMED, but if I was to try and set up something like that I'd want to make sure nobody profited except for the charity. I imagine Lashings wouldn't even do the event if they thought anybody other than charities took a chunk out of the profits. There'd be nothing for me in setting up a game other than the fun of organising it, and I'd like to think the club would support this if it happened. If not, I'd try to set up the game elsewhere.

Any thoughts welcomed, or anybody else who'd like to help with this just let me know. Maybe send me a private message if you are interested actually. As I say I can't do anything until I hear back from Lashings with whom I have had some communication - but a charity game between some Charlton Celebs and Lashings would be great fun for a start and a great way to raise some money, and though all charities are deserving I like the idea of supporting the Upbeats.

I'm only adding my personal view from the outside of what I have seen regarding Lashings and it is that they are more of a commercial business that use the word "charity" to their advantage
A few years back when I paid a substantial amount for a Don Bradman signed cricket ball I asked if I could gift aid the payment and that wasn't possible
And they basically have huge overheads in having to pay the players to turn up etc
I've never looked deep in to it but I'd be surprised if more than 25% of what I paid that day for the ball went to charity
The only thing worth going to see on those days is the guy they get to do the auction who really is the best I've ever seen but someone told me he got a percentage of whatever things were sold for and you can say that's fair but part of me thinks Id rather line the charities pockets than the entrepreneurs
I may have totally misjudged them as an organisation but I know I haven't been back to one of their do's since because it just didnt feel right .
Love your idea of a charity football match and the best of luck with that but the Lashings route may not be the right one

Edit : although 20% of something is better than 100% of nothing !
So Lashings could be the only viable way
