Yesterdays Tribute

the tribute before the start of the game yesterday was organised and carried out to perfection. Naming men from Charlton and also respecting those from Sheff Wed who gave their lives in war. The pipers, ball and the bugle made it one of the most poignant tributes I have witnessed. Watched the kick off with a tear in my eye. Well done Charlton

  • Agreed it was a very well organised and moving tribute. I never realised that the famous ball still existed. Where is it kept ?

Not a flipent comment but was the score of that famous match ever recorded ? Before anyone says it I know the Germans didn't win on penalties.
  • The ball is kept by the Regiment at Flodden Road, Camberwell. They didn't know they had it until they moved from the old Duke of York's Barracks around a decade ago. One of my guides whose father served in the London Irish had it restored and it was valued very recently for insurance at £15,000 though how you can put a monetary value on such an item is beyond me.

The football was not used in a match so no score recorded it was kicked over there top at Loos, it aided direction in the attack. There is a good account of it in Patrick Macgee's "The Big Push"
