Royston Drenthe

edited November 2014 in General Charlton
I thought this bloke looked something special yet he is only at Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Reading!

Did he just have an exceptional day against us or do Reading have an embarrassment of riches?

God help us next week if they do!

I'd be interested in Piggy's thoughts or any other lurking Wednesday fans as well as our own.

  • He's the kind of player we have lacked at charlton for years ! Add him or similar in jan would be a huge push and show of intent!

Was the next big thing five or six years ago and was on the books of Real Madrid. Not really applied himself since.
  • great 1st half but went missing in the 2nd

Good player but looked overweight, probably why he is on loan.
  • Sign him up as he was brilliant!
  • Real Madrid, Everton, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, on a slippery slope.
  • First half he was on fire, second half he was on crack.
  • Best player I've seen from an opposition team this season ( ward for Derby was good too).
He did look like he was carrying a bit of timber but I would love to see him at The Valley in a red shirt.
  • Sheffield Wednesday is the ultimate death of any professional's career
  • Different class.

Gave us a warning of what he was about cutting in from the right a couple of times befor the goal but even though we presumably knew what he was going to do, there looked little our defence could do to prevent it.

Showed some gas early on too absolutely skinning Wiggins despite the weight he was carrying

  • Absolute nutcase Drenthe. He'll be class one game and then utterly atrocious the next. Really unprofessional by all accounts and his inconsistency is maddening
  • A mate of mine who is a Reading supporter told me last season that there were some fitness and other issues with this guy, who should be tearing up the division, given his ability. I think he was subbed in the 70th minute of that Reading game at Charlton, pretty much like today.

The bloke was a total passenger in the second half for Wednesday, recognising that we bossed the first 25 minutes of the second period. . Critically, though, he made his first half of dominance count

A big talent, certainly. Wednesday may be his last chance to make a real impact. Not a guy for us
  • Played against us at The Valley last year for Reading and he was rubbish. A lot of Everton fans I know don't rate him but he clearly has some talent. Tired after an hour as Wednesday fans predicted he would. He's had a few off-field issues over the years too.
  • As good as he was in the first half he was aided massively by our overly narrow formation. He was given so much space to run at Wiggins it was ridiculous. Cousins should have been stuck infront of Rhoys from about 15mins onwards.

As soon as we switched and gave Rhoys some help he vanished.

    It's been said...
  • He gave us problems but I wondered why he was playing on the right. He always seemed to cut inside (as he did with the goal). I didn't notice many crosses from him.
  • He was indeed the next big thing. But he became quite lazy. He looked nothing like that for Reading in recent years.
  • Not a guy for us?!?!? Hahaha seriously???? He is the type of direct and tricky winger we have been missing for years.

Gudmmonson is as close as we have to a winger at the moment and even he isnt exactly an out an out winger. We've always lacked pace down the wings to attack teams.
  • Thought he was Harriot but with all the bells and whistles. If Callum gets his head right I think he could do a similar job for us. Has all the attributes if only he could have the confidence to use them consistently.

You must have been listening to Mr F this afternoon when he said exactly that 1

    Spooky !

    And me
  • I didn't ;-)
  • Saw him playing for Real Madrid against AC Milan in a 3-2 defeat a few years ago and he was the best player on the pitch and didn't even come on until the 70th minute.

Was amazed when he rocked up at Reading last season

What, so he has gone from a Really big, to a Substantial sized, to a reasonable sized to a MASSIVE club.

Doesn't sound like a slippery slope to me. Looks like he's playing at the MASSIVEST club in the world.

The Wednesdayites nearly demolished the train carriage I was on after the game yesterday, absolutely over the moon with a point at fortress Valley courtesy of Mr Drenthe after their 2nd half battering.

Edit; I wonder if it was Piggy who was wedged into the luggage rack and booting the ceiling?
  • Lee Cook to come in on loan for a 3rd time perhaps?
  • Good player, remember when he was in the Dutch team for the u21's euro champs, was player of the tournament imo.

A very direct winger with electric pace, obviously as a winger he can blow hot and cold, but if he is warm he is still good enough to have a good game.

Looked unfit though which was lucky for us.
