Huddersfield 4 Charlton 0

Being a collector of Charlton programmes, I get offers sent to me by e-bay offer of old progs. which may be of interest to me.
Today I was sent one of Huddersfield v Charlton, 1st division 1938-39 (which in modern day parlance is Premiership, as you know).
I thought, although the offer price is £100 and out of my normal buying league, that I would check on that game. What I found was that "Hudders" beat us 4-0. Not very earth shattering for a Charlton supporter, I know, but in our previous four games we scored 19 goals. Our results were M.brough (at the Valley) 3-0, Brum away 4-3, Leicester away 5-1 and last but not least Man U at the Valley 7-1.
Sounds rather familiar doesn't it, beat Man U 7-1 one week and lose to "The Hud" 4-0 the next. Charlton finished 3rd that season. But as we know Palace and Smallwall are much bigger clubs than CAFC.

  • Now I know why Grandad was a complete fruit cake when it came to Charlton. If he came back today nothing would of changed, brief periods of euphoria followed by a swift kick in the nads and a reminder not to get too cocky...
  • Wonder what happened? Sickness in the camp? Injuries or suspensions? Or just a really bad performance? Wow.

The players hadn't quite been "charltonised" in the previous 4 games

Man Utd had been promoted with us in 1935-36. They yoyo-d back down to the Second Division the following season, while we were flying high. They were newly promoted back up in 1937-38 but were heavily in debt. Huddersfield had been a steady First Division side for the previous decade, and had finished 2nd in 1934 and 3rd in 1936, but by this stage they were probably on the wane.

It can be easy to see results given current league tables, but in today's terms, it might have been like Southampton beating QPR 7-1 before losing 4-0 to Swansea or Sunderland.
