Charlton boss would prefer to play kids than make loan signings

  • Dick Plumb, could Josh Umerah follow KAG? They seemed to link well in feed I saw and he seems more physically developed.

Michael Smith is no more proven at Championship level than Ahearne-Grant.

You're right, however he is a completely different type of player. As said above KAG is more like Igor whereas Smith is massive! Could easily have been the number 9 we are missing IMO.

I have moved on from last season as it was one to forget but he was untried where he perhaps should've been. He went out on loan numerous times and showed that he was capable out on loan.

KAG is more of a number 10.
Smith is more of a number 9.
  • All depends who the loan player could be.

A repeat of some of the farces of the end of Pardews reign? Of course - give the kids a chance. If someone like Chris Wood became available? Different matter.

I want the best players in our starting line up. If that happens to be a kid - great. If it is someone on loan, then that's ok as well.
  • What Dick said.
Cool for Bob to big up our kids but we really need an experienced number 9. Mendonca fired us into the Premier the first time around, not one of the kids.

I don't think he's saying we're going to rely on youngsters and I don't think he'll play too many at the same time. I think he'll prove to be not just a manager head coach that gives young players a chance but one that manages them well. If it was just about giving as many as possible a chance we wouldn't see players like Pigott, Sho-Silva or Osborne out on loan. We're playing two 17 year olds ahead of them as they're more highly rated and seen as ready to make some appearances in the Championship.

I'd rather see young players get a chance than more money risked on loanees that a lot of the time don't improve the team. Under Pardew we also had a manager that talked about players like Wright and Arter but then built a squad with 6/7/8 CMs ahead of them. A lot of money wasted on players that were probably worse than what we already had.

Some of the best players here in recent years have come from the academy. I see it as a good thing that we're looking to improve on that and bring even more players through. It doesn't mean we'll be going the whole season without bringing anyone in.

Over the next few years I can see us building a squad mainly made up of academy players and youngish affordable signings from Europe like Vetokele and Gudmundsson. I'm looking forward to seeing how that develops. Might not get the promotion push we want this year but we could build an exiting young team. Far better than where we were a year or so ago.

    This!
Think of today's squad this time next year...one year older, one and a half years together and many with 30-40 additional appearances.
Then take away perhaps five - out of contract or loans not renewing - and add five from Europe and the academy.
What you get is, I think, something better than what we have today which should be a real contender for the play-offs in 2015-16.
Some of this change might well happen in January; we might push on quickly - I hope we do. Thing is our club is on the right tracks again...at last.
    Nice feeling :)

Paul Walsh was in the side at 17/18 and helped get us out of the Third Division (League 1).
  • This crop of lads that have come through have something that sets them apart...there's lots of them, they will have the mental strength from a common bond, unlike what usually happen where perhaps those they do break through are lost in the mix of mostly strangers brought in from elsewhere and it might get a bit lonely or daunting...

The stated ambitions at the start of the season were to stabilise our position in the Championship with the current squad. Providing opportunities for promissing Academy players was always part of that plan and Peeters has stood by that; his public statement on the opportunities for the young players is a real boost for them.

But is was also indicated that by the January window, if promotion is a real possibility, RD would make funds available for the push for promotion. Sounds reasonable to me! Personnaly, I am very reassured by the progress that has been made this season and can't wait for the season to restart after this s...ing break!

Yes this is the party line, but it does not make any sense given where we are in the league. The argument that a forward on loan would block a youth player does not work because we do not have a holding forward in the youth team (and arguably not in the whole squad).

This is the time to invest, when we are on the up and we can attract somebody with the possibility of a promotion battle. There is a lot to like about RD and his regime, but this stubborn refusal to change tactics when a new opportuniy arises is not very impressive.
But finding a loan player that is good enough and will be committed to the cause does not equate with a "stubborn refusal..."; let's see what happens in January and have some faith in BP's judgement on this. Anyone would think we were struggling at the bottom of the league!

As i said earlier there is an element of making a virtue out of a necessity here.

Take out the young players and players out on loan

    Goalkeepers

    Nick Pope 2018
    Dillon Phillips 2016

Stephen Henderson 2017 - Signed on free transfer after having been released by West Ham

    Right Backs

    Chris Solly 2017
Loïc Négo 2017 - Loaned to Ujpest Dozsa for one season
Joe Gomez 2016 - Signed professional contract

    Centre Backs

    Michael Morrison 2016
Harry Lennon 2016 - On loan to Cambridge Utd for one season
André Bikey-Amougou 2016 - Signed on free transfer
Tal Ben Haim - 2015 - Signed on a free transfer from Standard Liege

    Left Backs

    Rhoys Wiggins 2018
    Morgan Fox 2017

    Right Midfielders

    Lawrie Wilson 2015

    Central Midfielders

    Johnnie Jackson 2016
    Jordan Cousins 2016
Yoni Buyens 2015 - Signed on one year loan from Standard Liege
Franck Moussa 2016 - Signed on a free transfer after contract expired at Coventry City

    Left Midfielders

    Callum Harriott 2016
Johann Berg Gudmundsson - 2016 - Signed on a free transfer after contract expired at AZ Alkmaar
Frédéric Bulot - 2015 - Season long loan from Standard Liege

    Strikers

Reza Ghoochannejhad 2016 - Loaned to Al-Kuwait for one season
    Simon Church 2015
Piotr Parzyszek 2018 - loaned to STTV for one season
    Joe Pigott 2016

Igor Vetokele 2019 - Signed for undisclosed fee from FC Copenhagen
George Tucudean 2017 - Signed for undisclosed fee from Standard Liege

    U21 Development Squad (12 + 1)

    Karlan AHarene Grant
    Zak Ansah
    Rhys Browne
    Kurtis Cumberbatch
    Kadell Daniel
    Harry Gerard
    Tareiq Holmes-Dennis
    Oliver Muldoon
    Jack Munns
    Harry Osborne
    Levander Pyke
    Tobi Sho-Silva
    Terell Thomas
    Dimitar Mitov (Academy)

And you can see it is a thin squad. Plenty of quality but a few injuries and we are threadbare.

We know the number 9 shirt has been kept vacant and we know we were after Chris O'Grady and Andy Delort (and maybe others) so they do want another striker, they just haven't been able to complete a deal as yet.
  • I still think that if we do sign a loan player, it will be with a view to signing permanently in January, rather than just for a short while and return to his club
  • The "we'll sign someone on 30 September as the 93 day rule means they don't miss any games" theory seems to been just that, a theory : - )
  • Alan Hansen was wrong about winning nothing with kids. Should have said you'll win nothing with loanees.
  • Henry, yeah that does show how thin the squad is. Whilst you've removed the youngsters, you've included Harriot & Fox. Are they deemed too old now?

H.I will correct me if I am wrong but I understand they've both got pro contracts now, they're full squad members not academy members any more officially.
  • So is Gomez, but not on the list......
  • It wasn't a scientific process ; - )

I included CH and MF as both have started a number of league games.

They all have pro contracts other than Mitov.

Lapsie, Ayo and the Man city kid needed to be added
  • Powell had to use poyet and cousins out of necessity and they exceeded expectations. I am sure the needing to use academy players does sort the wheat from the chaff in a constructive way. There is nothing worse than a loan signing cruising through a game and not giving a sh!t. I love to see new academy players do well for Charlton; it isn't going to happen unless they play.
