I will never forget the surreal conversation I had on my radio show 'Charlton Chat' that night with 'Vic from Charlton'. I used to do a quiz where people had to phone-in and get all the answers right. This particular night I had a question about Charlton's first ever first team black player. The answer of course was Steve Stacey who joined us on loan from Ipswich. Within minutes ‘Vic from Charlton’ was on to contest this. ‘John Hewie was Charlton’s first ever black player’ said Vic. I soon found myself embroiled in an on-air debate that was getting more and more surreal by the minute. In the end we had to ‘agree to disagree’ and I remember everyone there with me that night agreed that we had just experienced something extremely strange!
We had a few memorable moments on Charlton Chat – Mike Flanagan comes to mind! – but my conversation with ‘Vic from Charlton’ about John Hewie is one of, if not the, most memorable of them all.
On the Charlton mailing list (Glynne's long standing service) there is a guy called Vic, and someone presumably his wife, is called Sylvia, and she posts in tandem with him. He is of a certain age and I always wondered if he is "Vic from Charlton". But he gives the surname O'Connor, whereas Vic Skinner rings a bell for me too.

What made this so surreal was Vic saying he had stood right next to John Hewie and he was indeed Black !
how Steve kept his cool i will never know. Perhaps because Vic rang every week, he was given a bit of slack.
I think this may be the guy who said good morning to me at a night match.

Pete - can you upload the clip for another 60 secs or so? Want to get the bit when Colin Powell starts crying, asks Mark to take over, and he is also in bits.
If I listen to that I may just lose it at my desk.
Will try and do it later today.
Yes please. It is classic!
Here are all the penalties. courtesy of Mark Mansfield

Blimey is that still going, that used to take up a lot of my work time back in the day...

Likewise. Could someone officially confirm when the mailing list originally started (Glynne or Rick?)
Shame it's still not around on a Sunday evening. Some absolute classic comments on RTM about Bugner and Cooper, overturned tables in the Yorkshire Grey. Dead air when Clive R pressed the wrong button at least once every Sunday.
The last 2 shows with Mansfield were rather sad I thought. Still do now.
Really good interview. Just hearing his voice takes you back to some great occasions. Although Pete didn't ask him outright, I get the impression that he's absolutely nowhere near as enthused for the club as he once was, which is a real shame.
Really disappointed with this. The whole interview was around Curbs and the playoff final. I wanted to hear his thoughts on the club now, such as ' do you follow the clubs fortunes, do you look in to the web site,do you listen to matches on 'player or look into the fans forums. From the day he walked we have heard not a word,I was hoping for some of the gaps being filled.Sadly we got none of that. I thought PeteF would have delved into why there was such a fall out with Murray ,all we know is it was surrounding the radio contract with Capital Radio. It would have been nice to have got a bit of insight. It was almost as if Mark had agreed to the interview but only on condition we left out the 'meaty stuff' and only asked questions surrounding Curbs and the playoff final. Even at the end when Pete said we hope to see you at the Valley again because a lot of people would like to say hello, the comment was ignored he wouldn't commit. Alas I felt he still holds a grudge against the club and has completely wiped it out of his life.Sad,but that was my impression. I would love to be wrong. Perhaps Pete can tell us why he didn't do a' Piers Morgan' and get to the bottom of it all.
Can someone fill me in as to what happened? and when? and who with?
In a nutshell he used to work on a local radio station, Radio Thamesmead/RTM/Millenium were various names for it. The club allowed them to commentate on certain games and have access to the clubs media dept etc. A very good Sunday night phone in show was on RTM in which MM was involved. Then the club did a deal with Capital Gold to give them exclusive rights to Charlton's games, probably worth a few quid at the time. MM took this extremely personally and severed all ties saying that Charlton Chat/Live couldn't continue, although of course it has. His childish behaviour on his last show was so pathetic it was laughable. Seems he hasn't got over it.

Vic is still there in the east stand. Really lovely bloke. The epitome of Charlton through and through.
Classic.

I bet that everyone who remembers that will be singing it all day!! Must have been. Sylvia then, all I know is that we would get a call within seconds of Vic hanging up.
There ya go, proper little earworm. Courtesy of Frank DePellette.
