Wash you mouth out, Henry !
  • We do seem to change once we go one up and the equalizing goal almost seems inevitable. I don't know why that is but that's what seems to be happening. Is this coming from Bob or is it the players taking this on themselves? Don't know.

My impression from yesterday's game was that if we had pressed them on the ball for the first 10/15 minutes of the 2nd half then they would have lost heart and backed off. As it was, by laying off them we gave them the confidence to come on and the equalizing goal was inevitable. The shame of this was that they didn't really seem to have that much skill but they did have lots of heart and if we had pushed them more I don't think they would have had the nonce to keep it up.

Two points lost I think even though in the end we were lucky to get one.

  • Stop conceding goals from crosses/corners.
  • Stop insisting the CB's pass the ball when under pressure.

It's clear that Bob's drilled it into them that we have to pass the ball from the back, but it didn't take long for them to realise that are very vunerable when pressed. Our passing game is slow, slow, slow, slow...etc. Unless the ball gets worked to Gudmundson, there is no injection in tempo or movement in the move and the defensive team just sits back in two rows of 4 and waits for us to give it away. As a result, we're not so dangerous on the break and they can press as high up the pitch as they like.

Sometimes TBH was having to thread the eye of a needle just to get the ball out of the back four. There is a rarely more than one option for them to pass forward.
I've actually been impressed with TBH and Bikey's ability with the ball at their feet this season but they have targets on their back. It's inevitable that every now and then they will get picked off and because they are the last line of defence we are in trouble.

Now I don't want to abandon the passing style, far from it. I became as frustrated as anyone with the hoofball style to which we are well acquainted with as Charlton fans. Just mix it up a bit. If the CB is in trouble and being closed down by two attackers, then clear it. Also, try mixing it up bit. Hit the odd ball in the channel for Vetekele to chase. By pressing us they are leaving lots of room in behind.

Slightly unrelated, was anyone else impressed with Alex Ravell's cameo before he went off injured. Great strength and movement. What a great foil he would be for Igor.

100% with you on playing the odd ball in the channels, let's not become a one trick pony. vary the guy who has to do the running, Igor, Bulot, george, franck, or church (running into spaces is his best attribute) or unknown forward coming in soon ?

Was with you on Alex Revell who has over 300 game + 100 plus goals. 1 in 3 (i'm good at maths)

The Problem is, would we buy a striker who is 31 ? we do need that type of movement and hold up play from who ever is going to wear the num 9 shirt.

Playoffs don't count either, ask Huddersfield
  • I think we lack options on the bench, whether attacking options to really go for the win, or defensive options to shut up shop, only one clean sheet all season says it all.

Maybe that's the difference between a manager who was a defender and the current one who was a striker. Fair play to him though he was still thinking offensively when introducing Bulot and Harriott on Saturday. Think he missed a trick at Brighton though by putting Fox on instead of Moro.
  • I agree with original post.

We have been infront for 7/8 games we have played...and only eventually won 3 of those.

These draws need to be wins...more so against the lesser teams like rotheram.

I too, dont want get ahead or be greedy but I want charlton to be the best we can be. We have a tough run of games coming up. (would certainly take a point away at norwich)

The reality is, we could fire blanks at home to boro and away at norwich.

Would do well to come out the other side there, or I dont know, do I expect too much or being too negative?

Yes, of course. However, the original question for @seriously_red used the phrase "at this level". I took that to mean in The Championship.

A bit hard when we invite pressure onto us for 45minutes of a 90 minute match, we're lucky our defenders do so well for the majority of the games, if our defence was weaker we'd be nearer the bottom of that table. A lot nearer.
  • 10 games even better! Would be completely amazing if theunbeaten run carries on beyond Norwich away...main thing is this is a new team and it's competing in every game though not always for the full 90 minutes. Pre season many thought we would be found out vs Wigan and Derby and the bookies had us down as relegation favourites - they were wrong.
I am hopeful about the Boro game which is another step towards the table after ten games.
I have not looked at fixtures after Norwich as the first ten were always the priority to establish CAFC back in the top half of the table. Perhaps after Norwich people should ask what's next...Perhaps the supporters Trust should ask it's network of fan contacts how they feel and where expectations are for this season... Important not to run away with ourselves but also for the club to be able to seize the moment.

  • The worry is that when we go 1 to 0 down, then we will start to defend that position rather than lose by two ! Don,t laugh we have done it before. Sorry, think Bob should be doing something to sort this out, not saying he is pleased with it !

  • So if bob isn't going to use the loan window when I don't think RD or any of the management team are going for promotion!! We want it!! They think we are not ready yet!! Play Bulot and put Cousins centre mid!!! Oh sorry Jacko I love u but on room at the inn
  • Any half time inspiration?
  • Not quite. A lot better today though.
  • I think it would tip the balance if we had the ball a bit more - you can only score when you have it. Our possession percentage (from BBC website) so far this season is …

    Brentford 39
    Wigan 45
    Derby 37
    Huddersfield 63
    Brighton 36
    Watford 39
    Wolves 40
    Rotherham 48
    ‘Boro 54.

Note we have only crept over 50 percent when we’ve finished against 10 men.

That said, we haven’t lost yet and it seems that mission target is top half / mid table (without breaking the bank.) It is probably viewed as a success so far by RD and his generals. We may have to get used to this ‘patient’ football.
  • I wasn't at the game yesterday but did it ever look likely we'd win the game?
  • No and playing two up front would help especially at home
  • 8 square passes along the back, one to Henderson and a goalie's clearance = hoof ball in my book. It is just a long winded way of conceding possession. Passing to one of our players who has moved forward into space is a start but how often do we see that sort of pass go straight back whence it came. We are capable of positive passing football with movement off the ball so my answer to the question posed is try doing it for 90 minutes, or, if that's too tiring, 80!
