Chris Powell, Stop the Hate.

Huddersfield at home will be something special, I have the most respect for Powell out of anyone in the professional game. His workmanship, passion, smile he keeps regardless of times.. You're not human if you don't like the man, but you can be human and not agree with his management. I think he done a good job, but in this game you have to move on, Big Bob won't be here for ever, either.8
-
I respect Chris Powell both as a manager and player for Charlton.
I believe it was the right time when he left. If it had been anyone else who was manager at that time most supporters would have been calling for the manager to be sacked.
I hope he goes on to have a successful career as a manager, except when his team are playing us.5 -

Embarrassing.2

Riga did better with the same players, that's a fact. Don't get me wrong I'm a big CP fan, but he should perhaps focus on his new job instead of bringing our new owners up at every opportunity. I for one am pretty happy with how we've started this season under RD.oohaahmortimer said:

Sadie, we might have our differences, but anyone brave enough to post a poem on a football forum gets a big tip of the hat from me. Well done.3

Chris Powell as a person and as a player is beyond recrimination or criticism. Chris Powell as a manager, perhaps less so. The problem being when the two lines are blurred I think; football fans as a rule are a pretty passionate/idiotic (delete as you see fit) bunch and minor errors or lucky breaks get blown out of proportion into signs of incompetence or genius when neither is the case.
That said, I really don't think Powell is doing himself a tremendous amount of good by bringing up Charlton's current ownership. He and RD has differences of opinion it's fair to say but current success and a manager winning over fans and the press very quickly (not unlike Powell himself) show the system is not inherently flawed, it just didn't work out for CP, which is a shame but it seems that ultimately the right call was made for the club, and in the end it will be the club over any one manager for me.2 -
Lol thanks! I prefer the last one I put on here though. This one was written last night after an almost heated argument on another forum, I got the hump and I wrote it in about 10 minutes (you can tell).Chunes said:Sadie, we might have our differences, but anyone brave enough to post a poem on a football forum gets a big tip of the hat from me. The way people are civilly discussing Powell on this thread now, with different opinions but respecting each other is exactly what I wanted. Not just with Powell but with everyone and everything, we are all individuals and have different views and opinions, but we are all adults and should be able to discuss with and respect each other, we also all have a common interest which should help.
Sorry never meant to embarrass anyone.tom- k said:Embarrassing.

He's Gone!
Three times a player, once as a manager,
Forever in the history books.
But Chris Powell's departure isn't
As straight forward as it looks...
...Because some people just won't let go
Be it out of love or spurred by hate,
His very name divides masses and
Sparks off heated debate.
What causes such emotion?
What sparks such a commotion?
As a player there weren't a divide
All supporters on the same side.
We loved the way he done the fist pump
At the end of his celebratory tunnel jump.
As a manager he wasn't always great
But is this cause for so much hate?
We used to have rivalries, but now why bother?
When so many of you just want to fight each other!
You log on to your forums to have your online spur;
"How dare you call it hoofball!" "How dare you call him sir!"
"He bought crap players and was tactically inept"
"But look at where he got us and how many are left"
Blah Blah Blah...We've heard it all before...
Both sides of the argument are becoming a bore.
How many of you log on to which ever forum you prefer
And now avoid the threads with the name which causes a stir?
It's the moderators I feel for, their heads and fingers must hurt
Using their spare time controlling and fixing each childish spurt.
He is neither a messiah or public enemy number one.
He done some great things and had a bad run.
The over the top grieving and spiteful hate, is pathetic!
Just concentrate on supporting Charlton Athletic.
Some say good riddance but for others he'll be missed.
But at the end of the day he's just a another name on a list.
Rayner, McFarlane twice with Albert Lindon in-between,
Jimmy Seed was next and he was the cream.
Then Trotter, Hill, Stockoe and Firmani,
Followed by Foley, Nelson, Bailey and Mullery.
We then had Craggs then Lawrence he was great,
Then Gritt and Curbishley, The most successful to date.
We had Dowie, Reed and Pardew who all suck,
Then poor old Parky who had the worst luck.
Peacock stepped in, followed by Powell,
Then Jose Riga and we have Peeters for now.
Many Great names but none of them last,
They all get recorded and become part of our past.
It's a shame a once club hero, a legend, a great
Has become for some a catalyst for hate.
Whether you love him or hate him, whether he was right or wrong?
For Gawds sake it don't matter the man has now gone!
We shouldn't care where Powell is now or what he'll become
Just focus on Bob Peeters and hope for a great league run.
This should now be it, this is where it ends
We are all mighty Addicks, let us all be friends!

Powell was a great player and is a nice bloke. Whatever the results were under him the football was often terrible to watch.
Nobody hates him at Charlton but if he'd stayed we would have gone down.6 -

The moment the previous owners bought themselves time by appointing a playing legend, the writing was always on the wall in the hire, fire world of modern football.
Somehow it was always going to end in tears and maybe it would have been better for all concerned if his first appointment as the gaffer had been elsewhere at a lower level where he would have had less pressure minus the heavy load of being a playing legend tagged with the ill fitting 'Sir' tag.
Hey ho time to move on (again)1 -

Powell will really have his work cut out .. His managerial success so far has been with players he and his staff have hand picked and signed, he will not have that prerogative @ Huddersfield. However, the Terriers have the makings of a decent squad, it'll be interesting to see how Powell gets on with players with whom he is basically unfamiliar .. personally, I don't think it is gonna work out too well0

The actuality of the whole of the work Chris Powell did at Charlton, regardless of the manner of his departure, or how he has gotten on since, in my view affords him massive respect and thanks on his first 'formal' return to the Valley.5
