MegaBus trip - Any advice?

Next week I'm going to Rotterdam on the MegaBus from Victoria - 9hrs including time difference, but for £17 I had to give it a go!
Just wondering if anyone has done a similar trip, or used MegaBus before? Is it busy? Can you take food and drink on board? etc etc.
Have looked on the website for the food thing, but there's nothing on there.
Any help/funny coach stories (or horror stories for that matter) much appreciated.

  • Take your own food and ear and nose plugs. Dont sit near the back unless you don't mind the toilet contents swilling round your feet.
  • You can take cold food, no hot. Take a book. And a light.
  • You'll be fine as long as no traffic problems of course. Fast decent coaches. You just have to be ready for mixing with normal people I.e. fare paying passengers not necessarily going to or interested in football
  • Get a tetanus jab.
  • A frilly hankie that you can waft around your nose and mouth, renaissance style whenever anyone comes near.
  • And one of those scented pouch-on-a-stick things they used to have for bad smells

Done Megabus to Lille (and back) a few times this year so a couple of hours shorter journey than to Rotterdam but echo what everyone else has said re: food, cold only is the way to go. Be considerate of other passengers with no smelly food! I'd also highly recommend a big bottle of water.

Bring your phone charger in your backpack as there might be an opportunity to charge your phone on the bus but from experience these are often limited to one socket per 6-8 seats. Something to definitely consider when picking your seat if you can spot them. A book is a good alternative if you can deal with limited phone time. :-)

As for how packed it'll be, I could never tell. Sometimes it'd be packed and your sandwiched in next to a smelly Frenchman, other times I've sat through the whole journey with only 10-15 people on a 50 seater.

    Hope that helps.
  • bring wet wipes. you will need them

If you can't stand the thought of using coach toilets (and they've never been as bad as people make out), there should be an opportunity to use the toilets at the Chunnel services prior to the crossing.

The only toilets I wouldn't recommend using are the ones on the Chunnel train....
  • Mega bus? Have some dignity man!

most of us don't need a tug on the smegabus

  • Done the megabus trip to Sheffield Wednesday a few years ago with valley gary. It's a shocking service and surprised we made it in one piece without breaking down but for 6 quid each way it had to be done.
  • Don't be tempted to anything the Dutch natives consider legal and we don't. Did the trip home once and got stopped around 4-5 times. I wasn't carrying anything but one div was. He was quickly escorted away in the middle of the night in France.

Why not go the whole hog - really not worth taking any chances

  • Jesus, thought it said nine hours to Rotherham.
  • megabus is fine, did it with my mates to antwerp earlier this year. Have some music, decent company and maybe take a kip or two during the journey and you're fine.
  • I used the overnight sleeper, megsbus gold to get to Glasgow a couple if months ago. Never again, I can only describe it as Auschwitz on wheels.
  • Any advice? Fly.

    Buschwitz?
  • Thanks all some great tips there. One thing I did wonder was I still have to "check in" an hour before departure do do you have to board then to get a good seat or is it ok to wait a bit nearer to departure time? Don't mind the time when I'm moving but waiting an hour in Victoria coach station will be boring
