I remember his goals like it was only yesterday... and the chants of "David Whyte Whyte Whyte" ringing around the Valley. His life and football career both tragically short, so so sad.
It's great to see so many memories and tributes still flowing in. I think, like me, he really struck a cord with those of a certain age. Not that he didn't mean as much to others, but from the posts I read, he was a real hero for kids in their early teens around that time. I was born in 82 so I was 12 when we signed him. It meant that he was the player you wanted to be when you were kicking a tennis ball in the school playground whilst playing 66 or doubles. No disrespect to the legend that was Carl Leaburn, because he certainly worked hard for the team and offered a different option, but Whyte was the goalscorer. At that age, when kids my age hadn't really experienced a 'goalscorer', he came along and excited me. Having basically watched the whole of the 94/95 season video on the other thread, I bloody loved all the memories coming back, and Whyte was a massive part of that. Once again, thanks for the memories David. I know people of my age would've been forming their bond with the mighty CAFC at that time, and that season you even made me believe we might finally beat Millwall. But for that shot against the crossbar we might've done.
One of my older daughters who would have been about 8 when she saw David play said that's not David Whyte Whyte Whyte who has died is it? I liked watching him play.
Guys, I've literally no idea how the whole Twitter thing works but I sent a message/tweet to David's brother @deecure37 earlier and I think he is quite active on there and would appreciate any kind words and memories.
Sorry if this has been mentioned on the thread before.
His family sat just to the left of us today in the upper north M block,if ever a child looked like his mother then David was that child, very touching and to watch them in injury time, urging us to a win was very emotional as was the whole family embracing his mum at the final whistle, as I was walking out I said to whom I think was his brother, that was for David, R.I.P. Charlton legend

Shame the banner on here couldn't have been shown on the big screen today. I stood up on 10 minutes to show my respects & was promptly asked by the blokes who were sitting behind me to sit down, I told them the reason why I standing & they apologised as they knew nothing about it & neither did many others in my block by the looks of it. RIP David Whyte x
Arrived late today and missed the tenth minute tribute but a bit disappointed there wasn't a minutes silence. Have seen a video of the 'David Whyte Whyte Whyte' chants, brought back memories to hear that again. Very sad indeed and as others have said a real shame that he probably didn't realise how much enjoyment he brought to so many; but nice that is family got the opportunity to.
I too was surprised that the club didn't recognise this officially but the clapping brought a lump to my throat, particlarly when I saw Watford joining in. Had brief flashbacks to that goal against Brentford, and the times he was warming up and we would be chanting his name to convince Curbs to send him on.
During the tribute bloke in front turned round and asked "did someone die"?. My instinctive reaction was "you're having a laugh mate?" but then realised that being part of social media you kind of forget that there are others who aren't and genuinely wouldn't have heard of David's passing.
Nice tribute I thought and thanks to the Watford fans for their contribution.
I thought we'd have put up a picture on the screen of David during the minutes applause, but when I looked at it, it was just black. Was this the intention, or a technical problem?

a picture briefly flashed up then disappeared. Maybe a tech problem

Yes, the photo appeared briefly at the start of the minute, and it was announced before the game that we would be having the tribute at ten minutes, the Watford fans joined in, so they must have heard it. i assumed the blank screen for the minute was a tribute to David, but I may be wrong. Well observed by all, with most on their feet.
