As a Belgian, I was surprised by the old fashioned names given. A bit like translating my name in english to ... Roderick ! But then it struck me: this is part of the marketing/merchandising campaign launched by the Belgian National football league. Out here in Belgium many examples were given in the Flemish newspapers of the exagerated use of French in this merchandising campaign (what became a real hype - 1st time in 12 years Belgium qualified ... can you imagine !). For those not familiar with the country ... out of a population of approx. 11 million Belgians, there are 6,5 Flemish (kinda Dutch speaking) and the rest are Walloon. You'll hardly find a newborn in Flanders called Sylvain or Roland. Walloons apperently stick more often to traditional names. Also, in recent lists you'll find the Ahmed's & Muhammed's getting more popular ...
