You include Matt Holland but he wasn't a Charlton player when he played at a world cup???

Edit seen Barnes so clearly it's just players who played at world cup and for Charlton. Did Jorge "The Tank" not play at a World cup?? Better option than the other two.

I doubt Mr Blobby was either.

  • As far as I know the only players that have been actually on our books and played in the world cup finals are John Hewie, Mark Kinsella, and Claus Jensen. Soon to be joined by Reza I imagine.
  • Dennis Rommedahl going to 2 different World Cups should be worth a mention.
  • Costa played at world cup 2002, think they got knocked out on the group stages though.
  • Dennis Rommedahl going to 2 different World Cups should be worth a mention.

He made the Word Cup XI in one of those years

  • Anderson for Denmark?
  • Anderson for Denmark?

I know many of these didn't play whilst at Charlton.

If Andersen played in the Finals he can replace Jones. Edwards was also part of the Wales Squad in 1958 whilst at Charlton but didn't play according to Wiki.

I forgot about Costa , clearly he would be worth a place and replace Edwards with Mills moving to right back.

  • How about Deon Burton, think he played for the reggae boys at France 98.

Radostin Kishishev played in 1998, would prefer him to Mills

The other one I forgot was Jesper Blomqvist who helped Sweden to third place in 1994.

Would he replace Barnes ? On the basis on their CAFC career (which isn't much) I would pick the Jamaican born Englishman because he did have one superb game away to West Ham .

    My team now:

    GK Stephan Andersen

    RB Danny Mills
    LB John Hewie

    CB Gonzalo Sorondo
    CB Jorge Costa

    RM Claus Jensen
    CM Matt Holland
    CM Mark Kinsella
    LM John Barnes

Did Noel Dwyer ever play in a World Cup? I assume Deano didn't because he would be a cert otherwise.

    EDIT: No!
  • Bob Peeters for Belgium? Got a feeling he may have featured in 1998.
  • Does Alex Song qualify? Played in the WC for Cameroon though he was only on loan with us.

What about Madjid Bougherra? Has played for Algeria in the World Cup. Better than Sorondo?

Correct. Might be cheating, but there is a wealth of Charlton-related World Cup info compiled mainly by Colin Cameron on p43 of last season's handbook.
  • Dennis Rommedahl going to 2 different World Cups should be worth a mention.

It depends how tenuous you make it, but Nicola Berti (ex-reserve player), Barnes, Rommedahl and (soon-to-be) Bougherra are only ones to have played at two World Cups.

Berti is only one to have played in World Cup final (94, lost v Brazil on pens)

Wouldn't disagree with that. On Charlton form, I'd probably have Mark Fish (1998) or, as mentioned, Madjid Bougherra (2010 and presumably 2014) ahead of Sorondo.

Other midfield options would be Alexei Smertin (2002) or Alex Song (2010), while Shaun Bartlett (1998) would be an alternative up front.

Anyone willing to make an argument for Amdy Faye (2002)...?!

Thanks Matt think I will replace Sorondo with Fish.

  • I find it strange that our joint most capped international player, whilst at Charlton, Radostin Kishishev, does not appear eligible for this hypothetical X1.

Fair comment , replace him for Mills.

Fair comment , replace him for Mills.

Surely both can feature? Mills was a quality player for us first time round.
  • Some other options:

Thomas Myhre was in Norway's 1998 World Cup squad.

Matt Elliott was at the same tournament in Scotland's squad as was Christian Dailly.

El Khalej played at a World Cup for Morroco.

Unfortunately Bobby Peeters only played in qualifying.

Allan Simonsen never played for Denmark in a World Cup.
(sorry, incorrent - he did come on as a substitute against Germany in the last game in the group stages)

  • I also forgot Robert Lee , I think he came on as a sub in a qualifying game in France 1998.

As a former Charlton colt ( what we used to call the academy) , he can replace Barnes with Jensen moving to the left.
