I hope this isin't down to the quality of the pitch of last year, I know it was god awful but with a buggered drainage system no funds and a lot of rain poor bloke never had a chance.
I'm almost certain he hasn't retired, it is a redundancy. That being said, a redundancy could be a better option for Chris Colin Powell as it will give him a prompt payout you'd think...
As people no longer 'have' to retire, and companies can't 'make' staff retire, you now have to prove that the person is incapable of doing the job... Or make the position redundant. Not quite sure how you make Paddy's position redundant...

Agreed - redundancy requires a reduced requirement for work of that nature or at that location and the new pitch will still need mowing!!
It's likely to be Flash deciding to retire - hope so anyway.
Don't want to turn this into another "Digs at Duchatelet" thread, but I do hope they find the time to put a decent article on the website - a bit about his playing career, maybe even an interview. Don't think that's too much to ask.

Why would it, people are paid by RD to do these things if they are overlooked it wouldn't be his fault!
I did hear his ticker was not at 100% last season so it may well be he's decided to call time himself. The word is used a lot but I really think 'legend' is justified in this case.
I heard he was asked to only take care of the training ground and to take a pay cut. Or redundancy. Maybe this was a way of getting around forcing a retirement (thus actually doing him a favour before anyone jumps on the I Hate RD bandwagon)
Maybe he took redundancy - bit of cash in his pocket.
It's true his health wasn't the greatest though so wish him all the best
I sincerely hope he hasn't been badly treated. He was a tremendous winger, a very good groundsman, and is an even better man. My memories of him are endless but two particular ones come to mind:
1. Training for my local team when I was about 12, I rushed off to get the ball for a throw-in. Pitchside, someone tapped me on the shoulder and advised me to slow my game down and look around for more creative options. Visiting the school for something his son was involved in, he'd recognised me from the High Bank half way line and stopped to watch and help.
2. Finally leaving the terracing after our play-off epic at Wembley I inadvertantly wandered into the long bar. Fresh from his tearful radio commentary there was Paddy, whose spontaneous hug capped the amazing day.
What is wrong is again we hear this through the media, tittle tattle and gossip.
If it is not finalised, signed, sealed & delivered then the club can't say anything - otherwise you end up with a sort-of Hangeland situation at Fulham
When it's safe to announce I dare say it will be announced and the praise can roll in
Very sad that another legend seems to have been forced to leave The Valley. He could hardly be held responsible for the pitch last season and prior to that it was always pretty good imo anyway. If he is retiring I wish him a long and happy one.
A number of non-football staff were put formally at risk of redundancy last month and the consultation period has now come to an end. I'm told Paddy was one of them and that he has now been issued with redundancy paperwork made out to "Chris Powell".
My expectation is that Steve Bradshaw will go as part of this exercise.
In terms of what the club can say, it can - and has in the past - announce publicly that it is carrying out consultation on staff redundancies and explain the reasons why.

Comms Department act under instruction from their superiors in terms of the information they put on the website. It wasn't the Comms Department's decision not to put anything on the website about Riga's departure until well after the information was in the public domain.

On the other hand an email has been sent to all staff members advising them of Powells departure and whilst I would not put us as important as his colleagues, to avoid rumour speculation a release should have been put on the website to either coincide with this or held for a short period of time only.
