The week that was - 13th April 1998. Port Vale 0 Charlton 1

edited April 2007 in General Charlton
Following a 3-0 home victory over Reading on Good Friday, the Addicks travelled to Vale Park for this Easter Monday fixture boosted by a travelling support of around 3,500, most of whom travelled at the expense of the club.

Monday 13th April 1998. Port Vale 0 (0) Charlton Athletic 1 (0) (Mendonca (pen) 73) Vale Park. Att: 9,973

Port Vale: Musslewhite, Carragher (Corden 77), Tankard, Bogie, Glover, Barnett, Ainsworth, Talbot, Mills, Naylor (Folye 81), Jansson. Unused sub: Porter.

Charlton: Illic, Mills, Barness, K. Jones, Rufus (Brown 40), Youds, Newton, Kinsella, S. Jones, Mendonca, Heaney (Mortimer 60 (Emblen 87)).

Referee E Wolstenholme (Blackburn)

Penalty awared against Tankard for a trip on Mills.

This was Charlton's 6th straight win on the spin. They would go on to record another two, beating the previous match winning spell during Mike Baileys 80-81 promotion season.

  • I couldn't go, but from the reports I read, I think our best player was Illic who had an absolute blinder, which suggested that it was a backs to the wall victory. I also had a feeling that it was a bit of a dodgy pen. No doubt others who did go will put me right on this.
  • And we didn't concede for the last 9 consecutive matches.
  • Was there and it was daylight robbery, they pummelled us and then we nicked it. We took something like 50 coaches carrying 3400 fans up there.
  • We got lucky, nicked it as randy_andy says, I drove up with fellow addicks,Port Vale had the bloody cheek to charge Charlton who took loads of coaches to park at the ground, and after we probably doubled the attendance.
  • Daylight robbery, as others have said.

Had one break into the box by Mills, penalty, game over. Mate stewarded a nice double decker bus from Bexleyheath and managed to get a load of us together.

Said to the missus on the way home 'if we get promoted, i'm giving up smoking'

    erm....
  • Had the pleasure of standing next to Riscardo during the game - he was in his usual fancy dress & spent the whole game taunting the Vale faithful with chants of "sing when your potting, you only sing when your potting"
  • Remember it like it was yesterday.

It started bloody snowing at one point (or sleeting at least)

I remember the local pikeys chucking paper bags full of dogshit at our coach on the way home - unsurpirsing really since they absolutely rinsed us for most of the game, and if they'd had anyone more mobile than that useless lump Lee mills up front they'd have won by three or four.

Our coach driver took me and the wife (to be) on a scenic tour of north and east London on the way back - didn't get back to Chalrton until about 11:30.
  • Remember this one too, Barness had a stinker. Mills was on a one-man wind up mission and we were not very good!

But character showed through and super Clive slotted a pen in front of us all.

And I remember it snowing in the car park after the game too!
  • Great day
  • We actually drove up. can't stand coaches. Almost got ejected for trying to use an air horn in the ground. We were second best for this game, Ainsworth in particular ran us ragged.

I think this may have been the first time a club had 'bussed' supporters for important matches. It seems to have become a blueprint for others to follow.

Remember it well. Apart from the ground and pub, I think Port Vale was closed that day. Not that there is a "Port Vale" it's Burslem.
  • Yep, I was there and was sat next to Danny Mills girlfriend and Dad. I seem to recall Mills went on a brilliant mazy run and won the penalty which clinched the points. I had a lovely chat with them but they started edging away from me after seeing how mad I went when the penalty went in.

    I was there- great day.
  • Was it Mill's début?
  • Was it Mill's début?

I seem to remember his debut being away at Crewe (or maybe Walsall?) and I think he scored.

This may have been my eldest sons first away game at 11 years old. He found it so funny when the tannoy requested all Charlton fans to sit down was met with "Stand up, if you're going up".

Yes think you're right Crewe away & he scored with a header

  • Wasn't there for this but was for the 3-1 in '96 I think? I was only young but that was a great away day, every time we scored some of our fans went on the pitch and were told they'd get thrown out if they did it again. Then we scored again. Twice.

  • I was too (although it didn't compare to the Easter Monday trip a few years earlier when a Junior Reds trip took in Alton Towers by day and the match in the Evening!)
  • Don't know why I didn't go, but played golf instead..........36 holes at Royal Eastbourne and remember listening to a small radio I had with me and hearing that we had score whilst playing the 3rd hole second time around.

    Cheers.

  • Was only about two or three minutes into the game he got the header as well I believe. Pretty sure we won 3 nil at Crewe.
