Big Thanks to Riga But Lets Be Fair To Powell Too

Dear Lifers,
Before I set the bomb off, let me just say that I love Riga and will miss him badly.

These messages about "Thanks for the great job" are absolutely right. But when we say "Thanks for Keeping us up" we are doing a disservice to Powell. I believe we were well on course to stay up with Powell and its worth noting that lots of the games we won such as against Leeds and forest, the clubs were in turmoil. He also did make a few dodgy subs which, as one lifer aptly commented "If Powell had made that sub, Charlton Life = World War 3" referring to the Danny Green sub against Bolton which he then realized he had to compensate for by bringing Hughs on soon after which killed our momentum and our chances of getting 3 points.

Still he deserves our gratitude with the way he handled such a difficult situation and his exemplary treatment of Alex Dyer springs to mind which sums his reign up. I would happily take him as our manager (Obviously, I know!)

Eagerly awaiting your abuse,
DMC

    Hahahaha
  • Move on. The stats speak for themselves.

Wow, some people turn on loyal servants so quickly. Results were improving under Powell (see the stats if you want) we had a great fa cup run and had 5 games in hand with the easier games there.
  • Boring

    I wouldn't bother.
  • Thanks to both. Thanks to Powell for getting us to the bottom and thanks to Riga for getting us off the bottom and safety. Good luck in your future careers.
  • Is this a wind up? Tell me it's a wind up?

Haven't turned on Powell, feel that he wasn't helped by boardroom pressure and still rate him higher than Riga overall due to the preceding 2 seasons.

But feel that season we weren't going to stay in the division without a change. You say we were improving, the streak before Powell was removed was 1 win in 8.

6 wins from 30 for Powell. 7 in 15 for Riga.

  • Fair enough, but when you look at the squad we had with Powell and compare it to Riga's there is a big difference and we had the FA cup run which people forget about too.
  • The stats speak massively for Riga. End of. And yes, I am gutted he isn't staying on as manager.

I think lots of people are failing to see the bigger picture than mere stats.
  • We were going down, Riga kept us up, simple as that. CP could have, should have, might have done it too, but didn't. End of story.

    WTF??? Are you for real??
  • I'll always be grateful for Powell getting us promotion from League One, but let's move on.

This season, under Powell, the style of football and the results weren't great. We needed a change.

We'll never know if Powell would have kept us up or not (personally I think he wouldn't have), but Riga did so well done to him.

Let's move on and give our new manager our support.

    .
  • Powell had a Very good 2 seasons as manager , However we have to accept this season he couldn't replicate this success

Riga came in and did a great Job

Under Powell we looked like a side battling for Relegation. Under Riga we looked like a comfortable Mid Table side.

Overall , A pretty Stupid post
  • Riga got the same squad playing better football, than under Powell this season past. Riga did get wrong against the top clubs in our division but beat the clubs we needed to bar one. Chris did a great job for two seasons but when the money ran out he seemed to run out steam himself.

In fairness had Powell not made such a pig's ear of it then Riga wouldn't have looked so great.

In terms of squad riga had the addition of obika but the deficit of kermogant and Stephens both of whom were available to CP for most of his season. The availability of Poyet to CP is subject to conjecture but let's assume CP was not allowed to play him. I'd still say CP had the stronger squad.
  • A belated thank you to Walter Rayner for his management in the difficult seasons of turning professional and the move to Catford Mount would be a good idea as well whilst were making Oscar speeches on here.
  • It's no dis-service to Powell to say he was leading us to the drop and Riga came in, calmed the ship and got us to safety.

Powell was not good enough to manage the players forced on him or manage without the players taken from him... Riga was.

Powell did a great job in his 2 full seasons, but very little in the half a season he took over from Parky and far worse in this season in the half he was involved in.
  • Nobody can have a clue whether Powell would have kept it up or not unless they have access to some kind of sliding doors alternative reality thread. I think we probably played better under Riga, they were both saddled with a meagre budget and some duffers - some self inflicted, some imposed.

No - they do, they know exactly what would have happened Morts - read the thread above. They are all psychic, and when they are not, they just simply re-write history to suit themselves...
  • They were both really nice blokes...
