Charlton curses

With Béla Guttmann's 1962 curse that Benfica would never win a European trophy in one hundred years striking for an eighth time last night, I wondered whether Charlton had ever been at the wrong end of a spot of ill will.

It would also be interesting to know who was responsible for some the curses we are all aware Charlton are under. Beating Millwall immediately comes to mind...

  • Yes that witch at Southampton. They'd had a horrific run of defeats at home until they got a white witch in to perform some ritual. Step right up Charlton Athletic who were duly beaten.
  • What about the curse of the Charlton shirt sponsor?
  • The curse of the crap striker?
  • Charlton have made an attempt in recent years to cure a curse that has hung around the club for a couple of years. In the clubs quest to rid the curse of the two bob striker they decided to call in The Church. To date the curse is still hanging around the club.
  • The curse of Iain Dowie: "You shall never play in the Premier League again"

    The curse of the dodgy duo;

'Why should you expect to have a decent strike force, pitch and the nucleus of a Championship team at the end of a season when we have done a runner, to hell with the lot of you'

  • We've possibly sent a few curses the other way, some of which have rebounded back on us - "ETCYT" being one I can immediately think of. ;-)
  • The curse of "Operation..............."
  • Charlton curses...

"What, both Church and Green are playing? Oh for f***'s sake!"
  • Seriously my late dad used to tell my that The Valley is/was the subject of some kind of gypsy curse. He always mentioned that when the club had been victim of misfortune at various times.

  • If you think supporting charlton is a club that carries a curse...try being a moth, they only live for a day :)
  • The curse of being a Charlton supporter.

I used to hear these type of things and put it down to people trying to rationalise yet another home defeat, but Lennie Lawrence did say that Eddie Firmani told him there were bad vibes around the place.

Every day I curse My Uncle John, and my cousin, along with Kev and Don (their mates) for taking me to The Valley in 1970 !

  • I thought the 1946 FA cup final was lost due to a curse. Not a Charlton curse but an ancient curse by Gypsies that Derby would never win the FA cup because the Baseball Ground was built on their campsite. Sure enough they had never won it so when they got to the final in 1946 there was a rumour that they had been and bribed some gypsies to lift the curse and lo and behold, the mighty Addicks were proof that it worked. Note this is the only time in the history of Charlton that we have lost in an FA cup final and surely evidence that but for the gypsies curse we would have won.

They knew how to cut a deal then because it was all square at full time and would have needed an additional bung for a result in extra time :-)

  • I seem to remember the curse of one of our shirts. Wasn't it the white away shirt with the purple and green line on it. We never actually won an away game whilst wearing it. I think Viglin was the sponsor.
