Still hold him highly accountable for the sheff utd result
And against Barnsley
You have to take the rough with the smooth as a fan and as a player
A lot of credit to Riga again and his coaching methods that focus on the mental side of football as well as technical
Not sure you should be allowed to get way with that, mate.
He missed one good scoring chance against Sheffield United. That makes him accountable for the defeat? As opposed to the other 13 or so who were all woefully below par on the day? (Wiggins, worst I've ever seen him play, for example.) I did not see Barnsley, but lesser players can suffer from a long time when their substitution is greeted with jeers and ironic cheers. Good job he's made of sterner stuff, eh, otherwise we might be in Division Three after Danny Green, the only alternative wide man, was brought in to face Watford, and failed to step up to the plate, yet again.
You were not the most vitriolic critic of him on here, I concede, but still I'd expect you, as someone who usually tries to be fair, to be a bit more gracious towards him.
I have always known there is a great talent in there but this season he was too inhibited in his play. Part of the reason is some of the supporters we have who moan and groan too much. People might say it shouldn't affect a player, but he is young and it affected him. One issue is that he is a player that is best going at defenders/trying things and putting them on the back foot. This approach doesn't always work and he has to keep doing it as it adds an extra dimension in that it puts doubt in defenders heads and they are less comfortable, but he was too afraid to earlier in the season and was taking the easy options too often. We have many more players who are better at laying the ball off to a team mate than Harriot, but we don't have many who are better at opening teams up when things are tight. When he tries and fails we have to encourage him to go again. Then we might have the player we have seen in the last two games on our hands!
On Tuesday the bloke in front of me was busy slagging off Callum for doing too many step-overs etc and this was after his great first goal! When he belted in his second goal this geezer was up on his feet like the rest of us, all smiles but It made me think what a critical bunch of fans we can be. Three bad games on the trot, 'Get rid-useless.' Then after Callum's wonder week he becomes the goal hero. In truth it takes guts and confidence to try to dribble past Championship level defenders and the kid is doing great.
He's like a lot of our players. On a good day he's comfortably championship standard. On an average to bad day he can look... well... a bit league one.
The great thing about Harriot, which is not true of all wingers, is he doesn't hide and gets himself involved in games. There were some bad decisions and some early signs of unrest in the crowd on Tuesday, but he kept going and got his rewards. We should stick with him as fans IMHO.
Great moment for Callum scoring that third and getting lifted aloft by the players when they came accross to the fans. You could see just how elated he was. Will be a great thing for him to take into pre season and let's hope he pushes on again. Hope Riga stays because it's obvious that he rates Harriot and can see his weaknesses and seems to know how to handle him. He's always going to blow a bit hot and cold. All wingers do. It's just getting the hot bits more frequent than the cold bits.
Excited about this summer and I've not thought that for some time.
Well done Callum, if Jose and his gang can get this sort of performance out of him most games i'd be more than happy. Perhaps we should get waggy back and let jose do his magic on him
Well pleased for him. He must have been on the floor after the Barnsley defeat but he's picked himself up, Riga has somehow instilled some confidence in him, and he has repaid that faith.
The miss and then bottling the tackle on the half way line that led to either the first or second goal at sheff u
The performance against Barnsley was woeful and even his own team at times refused to pass to him
I said it after sheff weds and Watford fair play to him he rammed them words back down our throats
But he needs to now show consistency he needs to be able to swap wings and deliver and he needs to continue finishing like he did
Me I reckon Riga and his coaching style the mental side of the game that he is very forthright and leading in thinking is one of the reasons Calum has achieved since those games
Well perhaps we should create a song for him then! And sing it whenever he tries to take on a man whether it comes off or not! If we do that and don't get in his back then the chances are he'll feed off that and the performances will improve!
Have you forgiven Paul Mortimer for his penalty miss at home to Leeds in our first Prem season? I haven't. That miss relegated us, yet people still adore him. Blimey there are two people on this thread named after him. I guess it's because he was one of the most talented attacking players most of us have seen in a Charlton shirt.
But how many times did he use that talent effectively? Especially in the big games where we needed it. I remember when his name was announced for the Leeds game, friends around me said that's a good choice, and I said,no, this player just breaks your heart. And that is what he did. That to me is far, far worse than anything poor Callum has done. So he bottled a tackle. Loads of other players did things out of character that day, and you know why.
And as for bloody Reza, a player you want us to keep. That cameo against Blackburn was a bloody disgrace. Wouldn't you agree? Well, JR certainly seemed to.
I agree Callum's got a lot of work to do. I certainly thought NSS might be right when he described him as the new Lloyd Sam. But there are few bigger bounce backs we've seen than Callum's in the last month. And he's just 20. The reason to cut him some slack is that he is clearly the type of player who needs it from us. And to be fair, against Blackburn, most of the North stand did that. Reza? he doesn't give a flying one about this club, and the sooner we use the network to get shot of him, the better.
We will see with Harriott like I said before he has rammed the words back in the last two weeks
He to me is not another Sam he is more another wagstaff but we will see
I think that in the 7 or so games this season I have seem him morts he is a typical charlton winger has the ability to do well bit is so inconsistent he will not be here long
Without even bothering to check statistics, I'll stick my neck out and say that we are far more likely to score goals when Harriot is in the team, than without him. How good was it to yesterday see defenders floundering on the back foot as Harriot advanced before shooting. That is what players with speed and trickery do for you. Defenders hate playing against players with such ability and are always wary when they have the ball. I would always try to include a player such as Harriot in my team and would be more than willing to accept the odd poor performance for the advantages that he brings to the team.
Easy Prague ..... Seriously , mercurial Morts was one of the most gifted performers ever to appear for the Addicks and a league above Harriott , for now
Harriott has been brilliant these last few games but it doesn't change the the previous poorer performance of the season , I don't expect him to do it every game at all but some modicum of consistency next season would be an improvement .
I actually don't believe he'll score more than what he's got in the last two league games next season in the whole of the league season!
Isn't it isn't interesting how he's scored 5 goals in the last two games after Jose Riga finally plays him on the left, I do rate him but on the right he hasn't got a clue
