OP, you should take it up with OohAhh as he has a lot more knowledge about why our away support is so MASSIVE...........wish I had gone but like so many other glory hunters I chose to go to the FA cup game thinking we would do well.
  • So some of the comments are;

We are sick to death of Sheffield. - It's a football match not a sightseeing tour.
It was a Bank holiday. - Correct it was, loads off work, need something to do? I know..lets go to waitrose with the missus.
We have expensive Houses down here compared to yours up there. Flats more like (lol)
We have been poor all season. - Yes this is true, but you could still stay up.
We were skint - but a fan on here was giving train tickets away.

Keep them coming lads, I'm the expert at giving it back believe me.

I'm guessing you've never been on the m25 on a monday bank holiday evening
  • Every club in the country probably has few hundred fans living in London. How many London clubs have a substantial following up north? Plus, half this season's away games are on your doorstep.

Doesn't explain why our following is so poor, but it does explain why clubs like yourselves have a good one

    Yeah I have.

would it really put 800 people off?

How many did you take to Oxford? 150?

All this talk of Sheffield Wednesday is boring now, yes great win but we're the ones looking like bellends not them.

I like the fact that you post on here and don't want you to stop, so I wont be taking part in any ribbing. Obviously I also like the fact that we won but, having lost more than most this season gloating is not something we have overindulged in (much).

I would like to say however that logic is not fact, it is the computational process we undertake in order to understand facts. How very fookin sad am I to point that out :P

Good luck OP, you must realise that, that win was quite important to us, there'll be a next season at least.

  • Give it a rest will ya....

So a couple of them talk bollox.....we've got quite a few that talk bollox on here. We won for a change....just enjoy it.

I agree I quite often talk bollox on here but this is Charlton life(hint in the name) but I certainly don't troll other clubs forums asking them how good they think they are ? Or before a game tell them how were going
    To give um a spanking

Let me lean out of my window and shout Terry across the road from me, He's a Pig fan you see and was dreading the thought of playing us.

You know in a funny type of way you probably saved us from embarrassment, they were on fire in the cup and could have got revenge for 1979, 1993, 2001, and L1 a few years back,....... hey, did you know, we even had an open top bus parade to rub it in to them because most of the town hall and the lord major are Wednesday :D

I agree I quite often talk bollox on here but this is because I'm always sniffing glue and I got my fingers stuck on F5 key yesterday I was gutted, I wanted so badly to give Pig some stick but I was so high I just started watching porn instead, oh well back down with a bump today and a massive headache.

  • lol because sheff wed lost to us again, all piggy has up his locker is our away numbers. A bit similar to many of those on owlstalk saying we only won because you gifted us two goals wtf what about the 2 goals we gifted you. Most goals teams score are due to poor defending by the team that concede. Proper sore losers.
  • The only Logic are facts and facts are your support was the poorest away following at ours this season.

For a club that needs its fans the most anyone would have thought that you would've turned up in bigger numbers.

Doesn't bother me about how many you bring away but there must be a reason as to why you have 16-20k gates at home but then only 193 fans turned up at Leeds and a few more here.

Fail to disagree there mate, UTO
  • OP - if you had yo watch the dross we have been served up at home for the last two years, you might think twice about travelling to watch them away. I am a season ticket holder who has missed a couple of home games due to holiday and 6 Nations. My return from the rest has been four home wins, only one of which sticks in the memory. I have done the 92 and still get to the odd away - eg Wednesday last season - but it's hard when watching them at home is so depressing.
  • Playing Saturday + Tuesday for the last 6 or more weeks does hit your pocket hard tbh, it wasn't a Big Crunch match as you put it, must win yes, but with Wednesday being safe plus expected to win

OP just move on mate we all have
  • I like Piggy. He's right. Our support wasn't great. I don't blame fans for not wanting to go... It's a poor stadium and swfc vs cafc games are usually very very boring and route 1.

I only decided to go the night before. £28 a ticket, £60 to get up there and back, another £28 for my dad and £3.70 for a burger without any bloody ketchup!

    It's expensive.

Within the M25 I would say a few thousand in the case of teams normally found in the top two divisions Croydon...

I don't think the fan was giving 500 plus tickets away!
  • OP did you come to the Valley earlier this season when we drew 1-1??

I did the shit trip up when we easily beat you in the cup, got home at 2am. Didn't need to attend monday.

As i mentioned on another thread it was at least our 8th trip to Yorkshire this season. Yes the turnout was poor but a few weeks ago we took over 5k to Sheffield for a midday sunday kick off, a travelling following that was the largest anywhere in the country that weekend.

We can pull decent numbers when we really need to, so don't you go worrying yourself too much.

Wednesday don't take too many to Leeds for the same reason, ticket prices. As for yesterday, clearly the team didn't need the fans! If it was a big game we would've take a load up, we had over 1k for the midweek cup game there this season. No idea why we don't have away support that matches our home support, I guess we don't have that culture at the club and just pick and choose games. I think Brighton had over 1k at Huddersfield which is incredible.
Maybe it's because we play shit football and expected to get hammered up there
  • OP is right, its all about numbers..

    2-3 are the magic numbers!

One club city, who get almost 30k each home game and are chasing the play offs. Is 1k really that good?

If I can't afford to go to Sheffield, what makes you think I could go to a place with quality. Think on son.

    1) Most of our games are north of the Watford Gap, and some of those that aren't take just as long or even longer to get to as well (Ipswich, Bournemouth, Yeovil), some people don't have the mental strength to take their kids (if they can't find a sitter or the other half won't let you dump your kids for day on them whilst you get pissed up at the footie) on a 10 hour round trip with 2-3 hours in the middle of the actual footie related stuff. If you live on the M62 corridor or are anywhere in Yorkshire/Lancashire, most away games are less than 2 hours away.

    2) One set of bad owners followed by another owner who immediately turned fans off by selling fan favourites, bringing in unfit spare players on loan and then sacking SCP is likely going to translate into unenthusiastic away supports.

    3) London probably has just as many fans as any of the 92 clubs as their home towns due to its size and makeup of people from around the UK and the world.

    4) Our away attendances are comparable to the other clubs south of the Watford Gap.

    5) Train companies like to charge a premium to trains that go in and out of London, meaning people simply can't afford to go to every away game. Likewise every motorway between London and the North has some kind of major roadworks on it, combine that with thousands of fans travelling up and down the country on a matchday and people lose the appetite to sit in their car for 10 hours just to watch 90 minutes of footie.

    6) Probably the most obvious one of all is that we've been shit at home all season and no one wants to travel to watch a side that can't be bothered to play when they only have to roll out of bed, let alone travel.
  • A fairly obvious factor was 6 home games in April. Frankly, that's enough football for me.
