  • Making a late run for POTY

I made a late run for the POTY once. Never again. I'll be planning ahead in future.
  • I think I have a large portion of humble pie to consume....

That was a real result which proves a number of us wrong about Sordell (and by the sounds of it, Church).

We footy fans are a fickle lot - I'm reminded of the film Gladiator when Maximus is told by Proximo "Win the crowd and you'll win your freedom". Sordell certainly won the crowd this afternoon.
  • As a matter of academic interest, I wonder what odds the bookies were offering on MS bagging a hat trick today?

    Sod-all

Didn't someone say they saw Church to get two was 10-1
So on that basis a Sordell hatrick would have probably have been evens !!!!
  • For those there, did we set up differently that played more to Marvin? Harriot set up two of his goals, did playing on the correct side the catalyst for marvins success?
  • Sordell gets hat trick about time he did something he has been terrible until yesterday , needs to produce it more consistently , 1 swallow doesnt make a summer.

Very true but if ever we needed to pull something almost impossible and most definitely unthinkable it was marvins hatrick yesterday
Just shows hes got it stored there somewhere

  • Really pleased for Sordell. He's obviously got ability and appears to be a very decent, caring human being. The problem seems to have been his mental state, i.e. a complete lack of confidence, energy and desire. Perhaps Riga has, eventually, managed to lift him? It will now be very interesting to see how he plays in the last three games.

Is it right to assume that given the players now have their longest rest under Riga that we'll see him pick his best side on Saturday, and then again the following Tuesday if we still need something from that game? Will that mean the same starting XI as yesterday?
  • Brilliant -- absolutely flipping brilliant -- cometh the hour and boy did we need that , massive credit to the guy for continuing to try when all else seemed lost .

  • Also, to be fair to him, he was put in positions that he's not had all season. The goals reminded me of the chance that he took at Wigan. Since then I've seen him around the box with defenders between him and the goal. Strikers need chances - and all players excel at different types of chances.

It is easy to see how he could have scores a lot of goals with the talent he showed, but I don't remember seeing him miss chances like that all season. Maybe we need to play a different style for him to be successful for us. Either way it is clear that the boy has some talent. I'm not sure he is worth what he is, currently, being paid - based on what I've seen this season, but I suspect he will get another contract somewhere, and I wouldn't be surprised if he rediscovers the for he had at Watford.

Frankly, we have been poor this season. We have played very defensively at times and it is no surprise that our strikers haven't scored many goals. I suspect that all of them would have scored more playing for a better side.
  • Still don't rate him. He has owed us these goals for a long, long time.

callum I respect your opinion on players from these leagues what your opinion on sordell

If you're talking to me, I'd say he has the potential to be a Premier League player. He's not near that level yet though otherwise we'd obviously have no chance of bringing him in...

He's fairly experienced in the Championship for a 22 year old forward with almost 100 appearances & 31 goals but is still working out his best game (he was converted from a wide forward to playing off the last man at Watford I think) and that means he can be frustrating to watch and has off days. Also took a while to settle at each of his new clubs as both Watford and Bolton didn't see the best of him in his first year, hopefully he can do better than that with us.

All that said, when he's good he's very good and can turn Championship defenders inside out with his pace and quick feet. The type of goal he'll score is comparable in style to Defoe or BWP. Lots of poacher-type efforts where he'll find himself in the right place at the right time but equally, he can bang them in from long distance once or twice a season.

If you weren't talking to me, there's my brief scout report anyway. :-)
This is what I said about him in August. Yesterday, we saw a glimpse of the player I was expecting.
  • I have to say, I thought he was one of the worst strikers to wear the shirt. I'm still not totally convinced but a great hat trick. Well done big fella. Now get 1 against Blackburn.
  • Pleased he got a hat trick and he should enjoy it. He has proved to himself he can do it, he just needs to show some consistency between now and the end of the season. I'm not saying i expect 3 goals every game from him now, but just look more dangerous and threatening in front of goal. I don't mind strikers who all they do is score goals, as long as they score goals. He has been very poor this year, but credit to him for scoring a hat trick and he took them all well.
  • Reminded me of Lisbie's hattrick, in more ways than one
  • Think how frustrating it must be (had been) to our manager, coaches if he does that in training. The hat trick was a really well taken as we all could see. He finished them chances so naturally......it will be really interesting to see how he performs in our last few games if given the chance which he surely must. You would think his confidence would be high, I don't know what his contract situation is with Bolton so I know it's late but if he has a good end of season with us who knows.
But he just seems to be a bit too nice for me, I think his desire might hold him back which is always a shame when someone has got a talent.
SO COME ON MARVELLOUS MARVIN keep it going and your time at Charlton would have been more than worthwhile!

  • Looked it up and he has one more year at Bolton. Another season long loan suddenly looks more interesting! Not sure Duchatelet would have appetite to take on his contract 100% as I suspect it's in the same ball park as Fuller and Kermorgant. Will Bolton cut their losses?

Let's see how he does against two upper mid table teams like Blackburn and Watford. We all want to finish the season on a high after what has been our closest brush with relegation since 2009... And of course we are not quite clear yet.
  • This performance confirms to me what I've suspected all season long - he's been robbing us blind. He has had all that pace, strength, composure and finishing ability in his locker the whole time. Admittedly the service to him has been mostly poxy but he hasn't gone looking for naff all. He developed a cute nack of offering decent runs but pulling up just as the pass is hit so avoiding the need to expend any effort whatsoever. He's been decent in training apparently - keeping himself ticking over but using games as a gentle run out. God alone knows why he turned it on yesterday cos his reputation in se7 is already firmly set; according to the Bolton fans on the train on Friday his rep is just as tarnished there too. The only explanation me & my crowd came up with is that he was so stunned that when a very good pass came from calamity years of training kicked in before he had a chance to think about slacking off; when it happened a second time I'm surprised he didn't trip over his jaw, we watching all did. Then when the chance of a hatrick arrived, gilt-edged, of course he couldn't resist. All of which amounts to the biggest rudest two-fingered salute to all we Addicks. He still owes us 7 months wages. Do it again, or anything like it against Blackburn, who still very much have points to play for, and, grudgingly, I might have to concede that he is something like a footballer. I'm not holding my breath
  • I've seen him several times away from home this season and been distinctly unimpressed. His hold-up play has been poor, he's been disinclined to do much in the way of closing defenders down, and seldom got himself into dangerous positions. Yesterday, he was a different player. He showed good movement away from his marker for his first two goals; he moved towards the ball more, making himself available for a pass to feet; he showed his pace much more; and he was willing to fight for possession, most notably for his first goal when he muscled the challenging defender out of the way and finished in the same stride.

Which Marvin will we see in future? Who knows?

  • Yes it's true..., 1 swallow doesn't make a Summer , but 2 swallows doesn't make a GULP ...!!!!
  • a swallow usually means its my birthday. OH we're talking about the expression...

Interesting point. If five days means all players are deemed sufficiently refreshed to start, and Solly is able to start too, then it would seem sensible for JR to put out his strongest team. That invites the questions: what is his best team? what does JR believe is his best team? are both answers the same? Personally (ie individual, ignorant fan's view) I'd see AA and Wilson as members of the best eleven in most circumstances.

PS Mundell and Fleming = IMF??

Also, to be fair to him, he was put in positions that he's not had all season.

Apart from Barnsley last week, when he was so slow, he let Mvoto catch him.

Sordell was great yesterday, but he was being marked by Llera, the slowest centre back in the top 3 divisions.

  • I dont know if this has been mentioned but the goals Sordell scored again the Massives at the weekend were reminicent of the goals the Arsenal Legend of the late 80s early 90s KEVIN CAMPBELL used to score.Anyone who remembers him think there is a similarity?
  • I'm not always taken in by highlights videos, but I was hugely impressed with Marvin's. Before the Sheff Wednesday game, I don't think any of us had seen the real Marvin Sordell. Confidence can make or break center forwards, I suspect we'll see a different player from now on.

Brentford want to sign Bolton striker Marvin Sordell on loan next season. #bees #bwfc

Just seen this, I am in two minds over this, last week I would of said I feel sorry for them,
Now I am thinking maybe we should try get him back
  • I really like Marvin and think he has progressed under Riga really hope we can sign him up on a permanent deal. Despite what others think Marvin looks better now because we are trying to play more attacking football and are playing to his strengths under the old regime none of our forwards looked good because we played defensive football, looking forward to next season if we stay up as I thought inexperience let us down today, looked again the better team for long periods but unfortunately wrong decisions by our youngsters at crucial moments costs us dearly.
Now is the time though for all charlton fans to get to the valley on tuesday and create a atmosphere to spur us on to victory, you know it makes sense. COYR
