Today's Penalty and fat refs

  • Thought he slipped from where I was sitting upper north east but having looked at that
OMG when is our luck gonna change, better team again today just need one to creep over the line from somewhere .
  • I know my eyes are dodgy but if you watch the slo-mo version the keeper doesn't touch Church and his feet just go from underneath him because WE WATERED THE FECKING PITCH.

    only ourselves to blame.

Keeper takes a horrible touch and I don't think church slipped. But I do think Church is actually running past the ball and doesn't get a touch on it.

If he got a touch, then pen, otherwise think its a 50/50
  • The lino should have seen it. Tubby wasn't out of position, but he was fat and slow. He was actually having a good game until that incident. It all went to pot after that. Still better than some of the shite we've had this season.
  • Was definitely a kick on Church yet..

Did Church have control of the ball (Could have been why the Ref didnt give it).. But then surely it should have been a pen for an off the ball incident
  • I just don't think its clear cut and is difficult to judge

For me, Church doesn't actually look like winning the ball. He's running past for a block. The keeper has eyes on the ball and is swinging a leg to kick it - he isn't intentionally kicking church to bring him down.
  • i thought it wasn't a pen when i saw it, but was on the other side of the kick, as was the lino. Typical Charlton, no luck. Thought Church had a better game today as well, though his one shot had as much power as an AAA battery.
  • at first glance from the North Upper I was convinced it was a penalty, the replay just confirms it for me

intentional or not it's still a foul

I'm bemused that you can't see the Church gets the ball. It changes direction! Church clearly pokes the ball away from the keeper which makes the keeper swing and miss the ball. The keepers Intention is irrelevant, miss the ball and get the player and it's a foul.
Only question is did the keeper make contact with Church, if he did then it's a foul if not then it isn't.

  • Lino on the east stand side was getting dogs abuse and he kept shaking his head as if to say no pen..clowns...why do we keep getting clowns
  • It doesn't matter if you have touched the ball, say a player dummys the ball to fool the defender, does that mean that the defender can kick him??? whether or not Church kicked the ball, if he hadn't been kicked he would have got to the ball.
  • Sorry, I am missing what you all seem to be seeing in that video clip. I don't she Church touching the ball and then being kicked by the keeper. Seems to me he lost his balance turning. Spongefoot strikes again. I wanted the penalty as much as everyone but, the fact is, the negligible contact wasn't enough to warrant a penalty. Just my opinion.

That lino was more interested in his tan than being a Linesman it seemed today

Have watched it over and over again and yes your right he does get a very slight touch on the ball.

Part of me sees why the Referee hasnt given it though as although it changes direction it does also look like Bogdan has put spin on the ball and its his bad touch that has caused it to change direction.. Big Question like with Reading though: Why would Church go down!!
  • .......For me, he went down as a result of losing his footing trying to quickly turn.
  • looks to me - with the advantage of watching it a few times - that the keeper took his right leg while trying to clear the ball .. penalty
  • From the upper north, I was slating Church for lying on his back with his arms out, having slipped over.

Having seen the replay, the keeper clearly kicks his leg from under him and I apologise to Simon for having a go. No doubt about it, that should have been a penalty.

P.S. That was the best I have seen Church play for some time.

Results tonight have gone our way as well, with Blackpool (also fighting amongst themselves) and Donny losing.

    COYR!
  • I've seen the vid about 10 times now... i am not convinced it's a pen. Seems more like a slip than anything?

  • "looking at the video, it was so clearly a penalty"

1.Exactly, unfortunately referees don't have the luxury of looking at videos.
    2. Why mention a referees size; they are not selected on Body Mass Index (BMI). They do however need to pass a fitness test at the beginning of each season, based upon both speed and stamina.

  • That ref today had a belly and a half on him , hope for the rest of us!
  • Looking at that video clip it was a stonewall penalty. May not have meant to kick him but he did.

But that was nearly 9 months ago !

Plenty of time for pies & puds & cakes & choccy to work their magic on that sveldt , honed body....

I knew it, it was only a matter of time before someone started being offended by the word fat. Gingers next

  • If that challenge had been made anywhere else on the pitch it would have been a free kick -- total and utter rubbish from the Official -- sadly all too familiar.
  • Ref today reminded me of most Sunday league ref, could keep up with play, gave some awful decisions and was FAT

This has confirmed that Golf says things to be controversal/wind up!!!!! Anyone who seen that clip and doesn't KNOW it was a stonewall penalty seriously need their eyes tested because they either need glasses/stronger lenses/ a guide dog.

Maybe they could become linesmen - they seem qualified. I instantly knew it was a pen as I saw what happened - it wasn't hard to see from NE quadrant and lino was well placed too. Wanted to run on pitch and punch the ref but I don't blame him on reflection - it was a decision for the lino to make and they only look for offsides because the are useless c-nuts.
  • If you want to understand why some people are not cut out to be officials - some Lifers have a video and still can't see it was a pen! Now they are fans not officials so not being critical but they clearly wouldn't make great officials - and some officials don't either because they can't spot things like this - but it is their job and this was a poor miss by the lino - even the apologisers for officials must have to admit this. In real time I didn't just think it was a penalty, I knew it was - I couldn't believe it when it was not given - I still find it amazing some can't see it!
  • Sorry but I have watched it another 10 times and I still not agree that the keepers foot actually touched Church's leg. Have another look and you will see that it was close but his leg sweep was complete and unbroken. I would love someone to ask Simon (off the record) if contact really was made as per his reaction/claim.
