Our Strikers

  • I agree with a previous post, worst set of striker ever to wear Charlton's colours, utter rubbish. Forget, he tries or he has no service, they are still useless. Who the hell would want any of them. Only one that will be any good in the future is Reza. Once used to our game he will be good, but playing in a poor side with no fight left. Why not play dervite up front, got a good strike on him and can header....nothing to lose.
  • I don't agree with this. We still don't create enough chances as a team. It can't all be blamed on the strikers.

The full backs could get forward more often in a better side. Wiggins doesn't look as strong going forward as he used to.

Midfield we have no Champ standard wingers. We're using CMs and strikers out wide and having to play 4-5-1 to fit out best midfielders in the side. Our midfield is unbalanced and we lack attacking options.

Cousins is naturally a defensive midfielder that we're trying to make a box to box player. I like seeing him get forward but he doesn't have a great shot, doesn't seem to read the game as well when it comes to making a run into the box and his game isn't about picking out killer passes. Our quickest first team midfielder other than Harriott says it all.

Poyet is very good but again naturally more defensive. Like Cousins he's not a goalscorer, looks more creative but he's just not an attacking player.

Jackson will score goals if we create more but he's not a playmaker. Like Cousins and Poyet he's not going to run at players.

I like AA and unlike some have no issue with his pace (or lack of). Looks quicker than Jackson to me (have never seen Jackson score a goal like he did v Yeovil for example). His fitness is obviously an issue but he should have started v Barnsley. He is a playmaker but could do with a good winger or two to link up with.

Up front we lack a targetmen. Even teams that pass the ball on the floor have big strong strikers that hold up the ball and link the play.

Church I don't think is good enough. Did ok alongside Yann but seems to have no stand out area to his game and there's nothing more to say about his weak shots.

Sordell is not the £3m player Bolton hoped he was but he's not as bad as some are saying he is. Decent touch, reasonable pace and strength and shoots with both feet. Has always been said the top strikers score something like 30% of their chances. We usually create maybe 2/3 half chances for our strikers. He's not great but I prefer him to Church.

Obika is similar and would be happy to see him get a few starts as a striker (not wide in a front 3) but unless we create more and better chances he's probably not going to do much more than Sordell.

Reza is a poacher but having to play wide because of our unbalanced midfield. I'd carry on playing him there (unless Solly plays RB, then Wilson can go RM) as he offers more than our other options.

Worst ever set of strikers? Would we be any better with Burton, McLeod, Sodje, Mooney, Dickson and McKenzie? Or Abbott, Sodje, Anyinsah and Benson? Short memories.

As I said we don't create enough and when we do they aren't always the best chances. We need better strikers but the midfield also needs improving to give us more balance, pace and attacking threats.
  • I think it's a given that Reza must play up front as he seems to be the only instinctive striker that we have. It's then a case of working out who to partner him with. Kermo would have been ideal, but now it's a case of finding another strong powerful player within the squad who has a good touch and an eye for goal. Who are the possible candidates? Jacko nearly fits the bill but lacks pace. Morrison could be a good shout and I seem to recall that he has previous experience as a striker. Dervite is another possible but completely untried. I do think the time has come to think outside the box, because this current lot are not delivering.
  • even shit strikers will occasionally score if given good chances, we don't do that whole 'create chances' thing too much

I think you're on to something with Dervite. He's made some good surging runs from defence which have generally run out of steam due to lack of options ahead of him.
Although I would be very surprised if Riga were to risk such a bold move at this stage of the season.
