Away at the Amex – Your feedback please?

If you went to the game yesterday, it would be good to hear your honest opinion of the Amex.

There were more than a few pretty critical pre-match comments on here regarding the travel logistics. Be interesting to know how things turned out in reality?

The otherwise-excellent Football Ground Guide contains somewhat outdated information, with reviews written long before the stadium was extended and transport arrangements significantly improved. If anyone feels like writing an informative and honest review on the Football Ground Guide, that would be very welcome. And helpful to other visiting fans in the future. As a yardstick, it’s always worth bearing in mind comparisons with other away grounds you have visited – and, of course, the Valley. The Addicks fans I met in the away end seemed happy enough with the travelling & transport arrangements and catering. But other issues – like accessibility, seating, view and stewarding are always going to be of interest.

BHA are fully committed to making the Amex away trip as good as possible for visiting supporters, and your feedback – whether good or bad - will be passed on to the club.

Cheers to all those who made the trip.

  • Can't fault the ground, or the staff, just a few mindless idiots ruined it for a few people

    Really? Who?

Thought the fans and stadium were awesome.

And that was just our team.

    Exactly :)
  • Apart from the game itself, everything was fine for me.
I left Brighton fairly early for the game (1:50ish) but didn't have to wait long for the train, which wasn't over packed and got to the ground pretty quickly.
The ground was nice, and I like the banners of popular players, especially the one of Garry Nelson!
Concourses were pretty quick, and great to have real ale on, the Harvey's went done very well
    Padded seats good
No half time scores on the big screen was surprising, as mobile signal coverage was very poor
Not a lot of singing from the Brighton fans, but when they did sing the acoustics of the ground were superb, and the noise really echoed around.
I stayed for another pint in the West Stand concourse, then got my train back into Brighton, 10 minute wait for the train.
  • I actually went down on a Brighton supporters coach from my village of Burwash. A super, friendly , knowlegable group of people. The coach travel system - parking etc.- is excellent. I like the stadium a lot. Brilliant to be able to drink Harveys. Like the padded seats. The stewarding was good, despite the provocation of some of our 'fans'.
  • Was sat in my seat watching the game having occasional puff on my e-ciggy, no problems. Half-time did the same in the bar area, no problems. After the game went for a pint under the west stand, did the same, was told by a steward they were banned and had to go outside! Was much too depressed to argue!

The park and ride from Mill Road works going to the ground but what a joke it is getting away! They know what time the game finishes so there's no excuse for not having any buses ready to go. We waited almost an hour after the game before we got away. I would not want to do that every other week if I were a home fan, especially in the winter. It's not like there's a pub nearby to kill the time is it?

Like all grounds from Stadiums R Us, it's in the middle of nowhere, but it is a pretty nice ground. Reminded me of MK Dons in that it's a bit soulless. It's weird that that the stand behind the dugout has three tiers and the one opposite doesn't. Seems a waste only having one tier behind the goals too. I do wonder how they would cope if they ever needed to expand. Would they simply move ground again?

The "local" beer was a nice touch but I should point out that London Pride is brewed by Fuller's, in Chiswick, in West London. Not South. Get some Greenwich Meantime London Porter in for our next visit please!
  • My sofa; super comfy watching the stream. Half time tea and home made cake also highest quality.

  • The system for train travel at Brighton station worked well, everyone was patient for the ten minute wait and the train, although packed, had a good atmosphere and no hint of any problem.Falmer station is about ten minutes away on a slow train.Set in rural surroundings by the Uni ,it is small and probably needs an upgrade, especially if Brighton make the Prem.and establish themselves. The walk from the train to the away end is just over ten minutes.Everyone, even the Police, were friendly and helpful. The food and drink facilities are good,a little pricey but the opportunity to have a Harveys Bitter rather than John Smith's doesn't happen often. The seating is excellent with good leg-room and views. One moan would be the mobile signal,non-existent.The home fans were fine,no mindless idiots baiting the Charlton fans for a change.A family feel to the place.Everything seems to have been thought through and it was a pleasure to attend---forget the game, that was a gimme in the first place.Just a fifteen minute wait for a fast train back to Brighton afterwards.A good afternoon spoilt by some football game.

The P&R from Mill Road to the ground worked well. But I have a medical condition that means I couldn't have risked standing for an hour waiting for a bus back to the P&R after the game. We took our cue from the Brighton supporters leaving the ground early in their masses despite their cast-iron victory and left at the 86 minute mark. Once you get out of the ground, it's obvious why the home fans bail out - to avoid lengthy delays. There were a good number of buses waiting to pick people up but obviously these filled quickly and would be taking an age to do the return trip for the supporters who waited for the final whistle.
That's not good. The stadium itself is excellent with decent facilities but the complexities of the travel experience means I won't be returning to the Amex unless it's for a vital fixture. (Or the Brighton voters chuck out the anti-car nutters on the Council!)

The concourses stay open after the game, so nobody HAS to rush off to get a post match beer. Our one was shut due to the idiots, but the home ones were fully open and free for anyone to enter
  • Best stadium I've been to in this division.

Really? This season or ever? I'd say Leicester, Southampton and Derby are all better.

More interesting design than those 3, which are all boring bowls really

    Fair enough.
  • I didn't go yesterday, or have I ever been there, but have driven past it many times. Just find it strange that being in the middle of nowhere, there's ample space for building car parking spaces, so why did they not do this? Was it a club decision or (my guess) some stupid local council wanting to fleece drivers with their park & ride scheme? Totally understanble if it was in a built-up area, but that's not the case here.
  • Really smooth for me. I was in Worthing visiting a friend so decided to drive to Haywards Heath and park there. The train in and return was very well organized and considering there were over 28K in the Amex I was amazed how smooth it all went when we all came out after the game. I was back home in Beckenham by before 7.

The park and ride is actually free with a match ticket so not sure why there isn't the facility for supporters to park a bit nearer to the ground.

  • Enjoyed it. Had the feel of a Premiership game, more so than recent visits to Leicester and Derby, which are identikit stadiums with different colour schemes.

Avoided the last two evening matches due to the nightmare transport stories. Always travel to away games by train, went for an early train at Brighton Station - 12-52. Had a stroll around the outside of the stadium - nothing there and nothing to see, apart from the team coach arriving, so went into Stadium at 1-45. A lot of people obviously did the same, it got crowded quickly, so went into the seats early. You need to liven up the pre-match build up on the screen - how about some classic matches?

The Hillsborough tribute was classy. The playing of "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the minute silence was all that was required. Spontaneous applause followed Gerry and the Pacemakers and the silence was well observed apart from a few thickos who didn't understand the difference between silence and applause.

As we specialise in 0-3 away defeats, it was an easy decision to leave early for the train (88th minute). The queue was well organised, waited 10 mins, was back at Brighton for the 1737 to London Bridge and got home earlier than expected.

Doubt if I'd go to an evening fixture due to its remote location and the risk of not getting back to Brighton Station at a sensible time, but will go back for an afternoon kick off. Grateful that we don't have to suffer the Withdean again.
  • Really good day out (not the game though), nice ground and had no problems getting to and from Lewes (enjoyed a 'few' beers there before and after the game). Harveys was in good nick in both the away end and in the west stand. We were refused entry to Dick's Bar after the game due to the 'incident' at half-time. One criticism of the ground is that the 2 ends should have been made bigger but looking at it I guess this could be changed if you were to reach the Prem to put the capacity up to say 36-38,000.
  • One bug bear for me. Why are the milk and sugar so far apart from one another? I'm not talking one end of the counter either. Milk was on the counter. sugar was nearly outside the ground!
Lovely stadium. Bit of a pi55take to get in and out of though.
  • People keep going on about the 'incident' without anybody saying what happened.

I presume it was a planning restriction to reduce the number of people driving to the ground, they had massive problems getting approval, as the area I believe encroaches on the South Downs, and Brighton is a very Green area...
  • Lovely ground, good train service in, left Brighton around 1:50ish, service out was sluggish tho. Pretty amazed how many Brighton fans were pouring out with 10 mins to go, considering you played well. Thought the local constabulary were a bit heavy handed at half time, provoking a stand off, totally unnecessary. Obviously saying this not knowing what prompted it but not sure what they were trying to achieve staring at a group of Charlton fans, who I am sure would be mainly aggrieved by the manner of your 2nd goal. But overall thought it was a great experience. Used to live in Horsham so know Brighton well and i'll never tire of having a good drink down there. Good luck in your push for Play-Offs..
  • Quite impressed by the stadium and travel back on the train not too bad. In the concourse you need some ledges where you can put your beer and pie. The pie was actually quite good and miles better than anything that has graced the kitchens of The Valley.

Good acoustics in the ground as well.

But £32 to sit next to the corner flag with a very poor view is way overpriced. Sitting next to a family of neanderthals wasn't great either but that isn't Brighton's problem.
  • Had both the larger and the local stuff you got, they were both without doubt the worst pints we have all ever had.
Apart from that, stewards were friendly, train system didn't seem too bad and we were back in London by 7.
  • Might add that the policing was a joke too
