Wigan

1. Feel sad for them because they lost in a penalty shootout.

OR

2. Happy because they put out a reserve team against Millwall and lost.

Comments

  • Pissed off with them for trying to pass the ball around to waste time instead of trying to take it to arsenal

  • No.2 and hope they don't go up because of last Tuesday.

This for me. I hope their season, literally, falls apart now!

  • Saw a group of them walking through Sidcup about 11.30pm
  • Number 2ish, I wish 6 years of continual decline on them.

  • If we stay up and Millwall still go down I will be satisfied that Wigan just lost the semi in a heart breaking penalty shoot out. If we gown down and they stay up I want Wigan to fall apart and be relegated next season after losing out on penalties in the playoff final!

    Bitter? Not much!
  • If the three points Millwall got at Wigan have any significance in either us getting relegated or Millwall staying up then I'm afraid I hope Wigan get their just reward in the fullness of time.

Petty, irrational but that's my view.
  • Fair play to Wigan. They need to look out for what they feel is best for their club. We need to win our football matches. No complaints from me.
  • No 2. Although if we'd been in their position I'd have expected us to do the same.
  • We do indeed need to look out for ourselves. However, one of the great strengths of the Football League over the years has been its integrity. Towards the end of the season many teams are left with little if anything to play for, but teams just don't roll over.

The reason for this is partly cultural (in his outstanding book "The Italian Job", Luca Vialli contrasts the attitude in this country with what happens in Italy), but it's also because when somebody does a Rosler there's typically a big fuss. For example, people still talk about Rafa Benitez fielding a weakened team against Fulham and losing 1-0. More recently Blackpool and Wolves were both fined for the same thing, though the rule that caught them has now been modified.

The problem, once we accept that what Rosler did was OK, is where you draw the line. Suppose we are safe going into our last game against Blackpool and decide to try Gomez and Lennon at CB. Pigott up front on his own. Koc wide left and so on. Why not? It's a chance to see what these players can do. We get thumped and Blackpool survive at the expense of Doncaster or Millwall? Funny perhaps in the case of the latter, but is it really acceptable?

  • Who do Wigan play I their run in ??
  • No. 2 - Should always try to play your strongest team
  • Who do Wigan play I their run in ??

    42 18.04.2014 Reading home
    43 21.04.2014 Burnley away
    44 26.04.2014 Blackpool home
    45 29.04.2014 Birmingham City away
    46 03.05.2014 Blackburn Rovers away

With those fixtures it does make the Millwall game look like a bit of a gamble. With so many teams chasing the playoffs this season they could miss out - I hope they do!
  • Also with just one win in five (in the league) they look even more silly playing a reserve team against a struggling side that they should have been able beat at home.
  • Did you know that Dave Whelan played for Blackburn in the FA cup final and broke his leg never to play football again!!! Just in case ITV didn't mention it!!!

  • 2. No excuse for helping Millwall stay in the league, if they had played any other club on the Tuesday it would have been fine though.
  • Also means everyone should want Wigan to win all games so brum and Blackpool get no points
