How many games in a season these days?

edited April 2014 in General Charlton
Because it seems from what I read on here lately that a growing number of our games are bonus games and should just automatically be wrote off...

  • Que?
  • I'm being sarky Kap. Whenever we play rubbish and lose it seems to be a case of it not mattering because it was a bonus game etc

    Just don't understand it
  • It's a psychological reaction which many suffer from as part of the "Charlton" disease. This effects those who have been supporting Charlton more than 5 years and can often lead to manic depression in patches.

Writing off all games we lose as "bonus" games makes those suffering from this terrible disease far more able to disgust such troff.
  • Call me greedy I would like to win all the games. Seems that we got well beaten today.Onwards and upwards, if we beat Barnsley I believe we will be safe. A loss doesn't bear thinking about.
  • Agree, AFKA. It's a big call to expect the players to keep on bouncing back every Tuesday after a poor performance/ heavy defeat. If we can manage it one more time v Barnsley, it might just be enough.
  • The Valley will be the nerviest place in London Tuesday night.
  • I'm all for positivity but when you are down at the bottom, you have to be realistic about the games you can win and the ones you cannot. Jose Riga seems to have this same attitude. He starts Church in a game we probably won't get anything from, then he doesn't get in the squad for a game we should be winning. Result? One loss and one win. Today, again, even a point would have been amazing but realistically it was never going to happen because with all the will in the world, we are inferior to the opposition. Therefore Church came on to rest a better striker and there was some game time for Chris 'used to drink with him' Solly.

I am optimistic before every Charlton game otherwise there is no point, but I'm also aware that this is not Championship Manager, this is reality. And the reality is, we are a poor championship team whose overarching focus needs to be on 'winnable' games.

I'm sure Bermondsey will be a haven of shaking knuckle heads... With added nerves.

IMO only a bonus game if you are not expected to get anything for example
    Burnley At Home
    Derby Away
    Brighton Away
I say them 3 as obviously we have lost them and again IMO was expected to lose them
  • So help me here Paulie, why would you expect nothing from yesterday when Brighton have not won in 12 of their 20 home games ?

  • Because Brighton are 6th and we are 21st.

I don't think it's a case of throwing games. We are looking to conserve our efforts, hope the opposition has an off day and nick points. If/when it's clear we're going to lose, we'll take off our better players to further conserve their energy for the big game on Tuesday night.

I understand that there are three points on offer for all games, no matter the opposition but having to face 17 games in 56 days with a limited squad means I do understand prioritising Barnsley at home over Brighton away.

I'm counting games as bonus games after the event if no-one gains significant ground on us. Today was one of them. We are still clear of the bottom three with 50% extra fixtures on most of those teams around us.

And remind me how many away games have we won, how many goals have we scored and finally what was Brighton's result against Leicester
  • All I am saying is IMO there are certain games you dont expect to get anything from, and if you do its a bonus.

But then there are games u do expect 3 points from and if you dont get them u know u could regret it, tuesday being one of them games
  • I think Jose is very astute and he realized pretty quickly that we just don't have the needed quality in the squad. This, coupled with the 2 games a week situation, has led to him taking the approach that he has. I believe the key is that we just don't have the quality. That is painfully evident for all to see. We're grafting this one out and it seems to be working. Worrying I know but I think we'll just about get over the line mainly because of Blackpool and/or Donny's tough run in.

In early March when people on here were mentioning our games in hand as big positives, I actually didn't feel positive at all because we had to face two games a week for nearly two months non-stop and I feared at the time that those extra games would ultimately turn into nothing for us. It seems that so far a few of the usual Saturday matches have been the ones that ended up as nothing and it's even worse that our superior goal difference is fading away rapidly. So I totally understand what AFKA's saying. BUT, what can we, or say the manager and the team do apart from facing the reality and trying their best to work out a strategic plan? Like most of the above members have said, with the thin squad we have, Riga has no choice but to prioritise some of the games. I also hope the players could have put a lot more effort into the games and I feel very sorry for those who went to the last few Saturday games. It's just that we simply weren't able to do it. I believe if it wasn't for the unprecedentedly tight fixtures, we wouldn't have 'written off' these games like we did.

But this approach has seen our goal difference take a bit of a battering recently, and this season is so close that it could come down to that.

If we lose on Tuesday, wonder what everyone's reaction will be to rolling over to the 'better' sides

  • I've seen goal difference mentioned on several threads now and I really don't think it will come into it. We have three winnable home games coming up so if we win two of those we are looking good.
There are six clubs in it averaging a point a game or worse. Our 1.5 per game is easing us out of trouble.
Of course nothing guaranteed on Tuesday but with Solly playing a part and our win last Tuesday I would say we are in a better position than we were a few weeks back and am really hoping the league table shows that Tuesday night.
Fully understand that fellow long suffering fans have endured some bad seasons over the years - here's hoping next season we continue developing and start winning more than we lose. Right now self preservation suggests that it's best to ignore the 3-0 losses as they don't matter.

Still, our GD is better than those around us. I understand it's tighter but we're still more than competitive there.

We could have gone at every game and bolted before Easter Monday.

Our one goal margin victory after a defeat like this is almost as certain as the 3-0 pasting away at the better attacking teams. I'm confident we won't be as poor against Barnsley and as a result of them also being weaker opposition am more confident of picking up points.

If we don't? Then we are still in a stronger position than three other teams.
  • Our run in has generally so far gone: if we think we can get something, we usually do. If we think we can't get something, we usually don't.

Six winnable games left, I think we've got enough in us to get 2 more wins before Blackpool.

And also having beaten them, QPR and Leicester at home
