Gerrard was playing regularly in the Liverpool team by the time he was 20 (50 odd appearances in a season) and had made his full England debut - Diego is good but not that good in my opinion.
If he goes on to have half as good a career at Gerrard we need at least £10m for him now (assuming he signs a contract). Which I can't see us getting even close to.

I have rarely seen such maturity and innate talent in a newly blooded player - realistically he is still just a youth player in terms of senior experience. Last player who impressed me that much was Keiron Dyer at Ipswich late 90's. Scott Parker was a young talent but something about Poyet - particularly his weight of pass, suggests more potential.
He's nothing like Gerrard. Completely different players. Cousins is closer to Gerrard than Poyet because he's a box-to-box player, which Poyet isn't at the moment. If I was going to compare Poyet to any top player in the world it would be Pirlo.

Fair comment but I was referring to his potential and he can progress into any central role given the right guidance and with right mentor(s) behind. I see him as raw talent that can be moulded. Agree, at present, his style would be a la Pirlo.

...and Pirlo is probably a better player than Gerrard, so no shame in that! I agree, he has the potential to be on that level. He'll need to add more forward passes to his game, which he is doing, especially for our third goal last night, and goals, which he is yet to do. Having said that,Gerrard was playing and scoring for England in his early twenties. Shelvey isn't a dissimilar player to Gerrard in some ways.

Really like Shelvey - he makes a few howlers but a real talent, no doubt about it

I think Liverpool got rid of him too soon. I'm not saying he would have been a top player for them but they should have given him at least another season or loaned him out to a Premier League club instead of selling him. He's definitely improved a great deal since he left us. Good luck to him. I'd say Ross Barkley (different types of player) is the level Shelvey needs to at least match if he is going to be in England squads but there's no reason why he can't do that.
Really hate threads comparing such young talent to world class players.
Lets try and not overhype a youngster for once, and let him grow into the best Poyet
I'm not keen either but I think this thread has made some interesting points. We have to be careful not to make direct comparisons. I think everyone on here has pointed out that they have the potential to reach that level.

That's fair comment but I raised the issue because I see a rare talent and have no fear of over-hype as he has his father to keep his feet on the ground. It's not often Charlton fans can say our Club have found and a developed a potential gem - so let's enjoy the moment.
Poyet looks like an excellent prospect and convinces me more than Shelvey did. Has great composure on the ball and is happy to get stuck in. Can see him playing at the top level - don't understand why it took us so long to play him.
