I've got a new team!! Toronto FC Watch.......

edited April 2007 in General Charlton
Come on Toronto FC, first Canadian side in the MLS making their debut tonight away to Chivas in Carson, California.

Exciting times for Canadian football. Gonna be great sticking it to the Yanks throughout the summer. They have a brand new 20,000 seat stadium & have sold out season tickets for this season.

Head coach - Mo Johnston & players Jim Brennan & Carl Robinson both experienced players with English league background.

  • Hi Oakster

Whatever happened to Toronto Blizzard? They were the 'soccer' team when I went to visit my godmother in Toronto back in the early 80s. Went to see them, but all I remember about it is getting showered with fireworks afterwards, as we were sitting too close to the display...
  • they went the same way as the Edmonton Drillers, Montreal Manics and the Calgary Boomers - all folded shortly before or after the NASL did. Beckham's arrival has boosted interest in the MSL & i would not be suprised to see a few more follow him here once the European season is over. The MLS runs from today until late autumn.
  • Thanks. At least the dodgy names went with them.

Enjoy MLS, but remember who your real team are!
  • of course Weegie, Totonto are my local team* though now

    *3,600kms door to door
  • Seems to be a fair few coaches who were players in the Premiership, so does that mean you get English style footie in the MLS?
  • The Home Depot Center...crap name for a stadium though.
  • The standard is probably Championship level. There is a definite emphasis on physical fitness over technique amongst the home grown players - but there are a lot of Mexicans/South Americans who add finesse & skill - most games are highly watchable & thankfully gimmick free.

    A mere 2000kms from here.

But this is going to be sooo hard! Supporting Toronto for the next three years at least.

Come on Vancouver and Montreal - get MLS teams!
  • where are you CS.

The caps have got a chance to win again this year and I'm hoping for a game against the Baltimore palace scum.

You might have warned me that they play a crappy song when entering that site. I hate 'glad all over'

  • Toronto lost 2-0 last night, great first half but faded badly in the 2nd. Not a bad effort considering it was the club's first ever competitive match & Chivas are a half decent side.

Winnipeg. Too far for anything but television for any of them.

But maybe Winnipeg will get a USL team or a Canadian league team if soccer catches on in Canada.

Saw parts of the game last night. Oakster is right, they looked better in the first half and you could see that second goal coming wll ahead.
  • to make it an even more miserable weekend, the other reds of Toronto were well & truly hammered 4-0 in Boston by the New England Revolution

2 defeats in 2 & with Mo Johnston playing a decidedly dodgy 3-5-2 formation it's looking like an uphill struggle already
  • Oh joy! Ex-Spanner Daniele Dichio has just joined us from Preston! That's gonna get the crowds flocking to BMO field.........

The latest Galactico to join the MLS

Any news on the Super Kev loan deal? The TO tabloids are going mad down here with the speculation.

Seven goal in two years, wasn't it? Does Preston play 3-5-2? Doesn't matter Toronto doesn't either.

What is it with MLS and 3-5-2 anyway? I thought that was a more challenging formation than 4-4-2.
  • Another crushing defeat for Toronto tonight in the pouring rain - 3-0 away to Kansas - thought they were a bit unlucky but thats played 3 lost 3 scored nil conceded 9 !! Tough start with 3 away games but opening home game on Saturday, so light at the end of the tunnel

Carlos Marinello late of Middlesborough ran the show for Kansas, word is that Zidane is coming out of retirement to play for Chicago - gonna be interesting post the European season to see who else comes across.

I see Tony Caig is playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps, probably the only ex-Addick active in the pro leagues over here............
  • Update on the Toronto boys - they lost their first ever home game in front of a sell out crowd a couple of weeks ago but have since put together consecutive home wins & could make that 3 on the trot today wih a win over DC United

Daniele Dichio was sent off last weekend in his second game after a right old ding-dong with the oppo keeper

Each home game has been a 20k sell out with fantastic atmosphere, a reflection of the hugely multicultural nature of the City

Good fun following the boys as they make their way through their opening season - Mo Johnston has got them playing some decent football & word is that more players from the UK will be coming over in the summer

The dreaded JFH has been mentioned more than once :-(
