Monday Football

Between Wigan, Sheff Utd & Wham, we have to be happy with one win and two losses from Saturday

Who would you prefer to have picked up 3 points?

We need to keep as many teams in the battle as possible. Remember, Villa and Boro are no longer in it, Man City are virtually safe.

It's 2 from us, Wham, Sheff Utd, Wigan.

Look at the fixtures for Monday:

Aston Villa v Wigan, 15:00 We now want a home win
Bolton v Everton, 15:00
Charlton v Reading, 20:00
Fulham v Man City, 15:00 We now want an away win
Newcastle v Arsenal, 15:00
Watford v Portsmouth, 12:45

Am I right looking at it like this?

  • Working on the basis that Man City have recovered some form - and that they could now get something off Arsenal from their game in hand - I wouldn't mind seeing them beat Fulham, as they could still be dragged into it.

Villa are also pretty much safe, so them beating Wigan would give us the chance to overtake them on Monday evening.
  • I'm not so sure Fulham are in it. It's all about Wigan and Sheff U for me - so yep, Villa to win - please.

But above all, we have to win too, and it won't be an easy match -let's not forget the Pards/ Parky baggage, which means Reading will be really up for it.

    C'mon you Reds.
  • Hasn't Coppell been talking of resting players on Monday?
  • Hope so! Mind you, never quite sure that works in the other team's favour. Unless it's Boro going awol, of course.

Absolutely are Fulham in it......and their mustard manager is looking right over his shoulder.

Coleman has said nothing short of a win is enough. And if they don't win?
If the Blue Mancs get a draw even, Fulham will have 36 points. Only 5 points above the relegation line.

They can be well caught, especially if West Ham's revival galvanises the other relegation threatened teams.

If only we'd beaten Fulham and Graham Poll & Lino on Boxing Day........we would have today 33 points and Fulham 34.
By the end of the season, one refereeing cock up can make all the difference. It could yet save Fulham's skin.
  • its in our hands, which maybe not such a great place to be. Now the expectation is on us to go out and get a result.

On paper though, i can't think of a better time to play Reading, they remind me of our good season and how we tailed off near the end. Beat them and Sheff U at home, that will take us to 37, which we need as when you strip out these two games, our fixture list starts looking tough again.
  • I still believe we need to win another game away from home to stand a realistic chance of surviving, regardless of what we do at home. So can we beat Everton, Blackburn or Liverpool away? Looks unlikely at first glance. We just need to catch one of them on a bad day, I guess. Let's be honest, if we can only record one away win all season then do we really deserve to stay up??
  • A Fulham and Man Citeh draw and a Charlton win would leave us two points behind Fulham and four behind Citeh. If Villa win as well that'll leave us in 16th position.

I think that's the results I'd prefer. If we're two points ahead of Wigan and Sheff Utd going into the last game we'll stay above them. As long as we're ahead of Wham too we'll be safe, they play Man Yoo at the theatre of nightmares in their final game

Sofor me it's come on Villa and a draw at Fulham.

This is true - four points isn't alot. I feel that we won't get more than 40 points however, so any team already nearly there isn't worth worrying about too much. I'd rather peg back Fulham as much as possible
  • We'd still need a win to go above fulham if they win or draw. A draw will be a loss of point(s) for both. I just think City will begin to look opver their shoulder again if these results go our way.

I think they're both fair points Pete. The away fixtures we have left are certainly not that appetising on paper. Blackburn is obviously the key one, in that they will be playing for little, but they are an hard working outfit and their manager won't accept anything less.

Are Everton playing tomorrow ? It would be a big help to us if they lose ahead of playing us, just to knock a bit of steem out of them.

Two out of three home wins won't be enough, we need to pick something up away as well.
  • An away win would be a big bonus but, looking at it realistically, I think we can say that home wins against Reading, Sheffield Utd and Spurs (who will hopefully have an eye on the UEFA Final) would give us 40 points and then away draws at Everton and Blackburn would give 42 points and probable safety.

An away win would be great but I think we missed our chance at Watford and City because although we are now a tough nut to crack defensively we have not got it right in attack away from home and don't look like scoring many.
  • With the way the results went over the weekend we now need wigan and fulham to lose and i think they both will. Then we will be up for it tonight and take all 3 points. Easy!

Equally Pards and Parky will be up for it and hopefully will transmit that to our lads like theyy did when we played the Hamsters! (I hope!)
