We can all blame our Strikers but..............................

edited April 2014 in General Charlton
We can pass about and defend well like we did yesterday but when we struggle to attack we will not get anywhere. Yesterday's game was a prime example.

I felt we have been too cautious with the passing and I can not see much movement for space apart from going short. Yesterday I did not witness any risks that we took apart from Cousins's brilliant run. Also, whenever we attack wide I only see 1 player in the box, it is no wonder why we are not scoring enough goals.

Remember how we played against Huddersfield, especially in the first half. We had about 6 corners and dozens of oppotunities to score but our finishing was poor. I am sure if we pose the same kind of attacking threat like we did against Huddersfield in the first half then we will be ok. The only problem with that is our fitness levels but at least we have a few players with pace who can pose a threat to the tired players the last 25 mins like Harriot and Sordell, so counter attacking may be an option towards the end of the game.

Riga keeps on talking about the lack of goals but when he plays 4-5-1 at home with Church up front on his own (who can not finish) then it's obvious why we can't scores any goal apart from a set piece with that selection.

  • Our midfield is very weak when it comes to attacking... We don't make runs from deep... It's a major problem in our not scoring... It needs to change.. Wilson at RM is our best bet.

Agree with you there. The trouble is, when we have Cousins and Poyet who are defensive players that is also an issue. I would have Cousins at right back and bring Wilson RM.
  • There isn't the necessary creativity in midfield is there? Against Reading, I noticed Harriott start to make a couple of runs but giving up because he just knew there was no chance of a swift through ball. It must get very disheartening running into space when the ball never arrives.

    Agree.

    Agree.
Cousins and Poyet are too alike id go for Poyet as the holding midfielder - we also start with a disadvantage when sponge foot plays up front, AA blows out of his arse after 30 mins and Harriott runs down blind alleys.

  • Well said, Disco. Whatever strikers we play they get stick, but how often do you see a decent ball into the box? And how often do you see a quick counter-attack like the one which brought Reading their goal? By the time we get to the box the opposition have had plenty of time to get everyone back.
  • What annoyed me Saturday was playing Harriot on the right. Yes he is inconsistent but at least play him in the left where he has a chance to beat his man

To solve the Harriot problem, you first have to solve the "who play's on the right" problem. We've tried Green, Cousins, Harriot and Reza and none of them are suited to the role. The boy Nego may have to be thrown in to allow Wilson (our best option at RM) to move there. Then Harriot can revert to left-wing or the bench.

    So...

    Nego, Morrison, Dervite, Wiggins

Wilson, Cousins, Poyet, Harriot or Jackson

    Adjarevic

    Reza or Sordell

But I say this without ever having seen Nego play or knowing whether he is remotely good enough! Or chuck Solly in for one game.

  • I'm beginning to wonder if Riga is even aware that Wilson is a good right sided midfielder who can get in the box and score. We have a goal scoring crisis and we won't stay up if we score nil each game. He has options, Cousins, Andy Hughes or even Morrison could play right back with Wood coming in at CH. Yes maybe the defense won't be quite as strong, but we are more likely to get relegated from failing to score enough goals rather than conceding too many. We have to be attack minded at home to score some goals and build confidence. Scoring 2 or 3 in a home game could be huge for us and give the team a massive boost.

Exactly and you just made another point.
  • Harriot was a passanger on Saturday and JJ was knackered – Wilson and Wiggins look tired too – they should be giving us our width. It is very true – nobody busted a gut to get into the box so it was too easy for the Reading Defenders. If IO was the manager- I wouldn’t have a clue how to play against Yeovil – If we attack them they will catch us out and if we are cautious they will attack us. How do we get energy back in the team and have the team playing with a bit more directnesss? One of the issues is the fact that we are very tight at the back – it is very hard to change formations when this aspect seems to be working – but I think we need to find a way to liberate Wilson and Wiggins a bit – at home anyway. I’d consider playing Cousins as a right centre back, Morro in the middle and Dervite on left with Wilson and Wiggins as wing backs. Then in midfield Astrid, Poyet, and JJ with Obika and Reza up front. The problem is whether JJ has the energy after all these games to get into the box when we are attacking. I’d actually consider Church in this role if he can play it that is – he has the work rate.

But really a desperate stab in the dark that might do more harm than good. Riga is really going to earn his pay in the next two home games. Away it is a lot more simple – keep it tight and see what comes our way as we played against Forest and Leeds! But the home games against Yeovil and Barnsley are going to go a large way to determining where we end up – we need to try something.

  • We place absolutely no pressure on the opposition when they're in possession (although I thought we did this better in the first half on Saturday) and when we do win the ball we are so slow to attack. There's no urgency and we allow the opposition to regroup - chance gone. Serious lack of movement and support all the pitch over as well. Harriott was expected to beat four men on Saturday with no teammate willing to give him an option.
  • What annoyed me Saturday was playing Harriot

What made it worse was keeping him on when he was clearly just as shit as last time he started at the Valley.
Calamity must have some very powerful hold over somebody very important at Charlton. I'd sooner see Sodall play cos at least he mostly stays out of the way where calamity harriet gives the ball away in double quick time!!
