It's days like this when I watch the game and remember that Clive Mendonca, Andy Hunt and Darren Bent have played for us. Then I see Simon Church. How did this happen? So depressing.
Without a doubt he is the worst forward I have seen play for us. Even the people who at first had him down as a 'hard worker' are now starting to see through him.
The man isn't a hard worker, he's a shirker. He runs when he has left it just too late to reach the ball. He jumps only when he knows he can't quite reach it and he does everything possible to avoid actually having to touch the ball.
He also makes our midfield look bad because whenever they need him to make a run or find space he is running towards a defender or putting himself in an impossible position, heaven forbid he may find himself through on goal.
not in a million years....how many chances did we create?
NONE
this is only proven by the fact that we are so annoyed that he didn't get onside when there was the possibility of an opening....that was the best (chance?????) we (created??????)
What role was Reza supposed to be playing in today, and who has been saying what to him? OK, he scores a great goal at Leeds, which barely about compensates for his abject performances so far, and then comes on today and either thinks, or has been told, to be the big 'I am'. He was gesturing, and directing stuff, indeed 'bossing people' to no effect whatsoever...riding on the fact that he is capable of scoring a screamer every once in a while to justify himself. He should get his head down, toughen up, and compete if he is any good. If Reza is proving himself with his actions then so far is basically amounts to one beautiful screaming goal, and a couple of woodworks. Reza may be better in comparison to Church, but by how much? Just as Church may learn from Reza how to be composed enough to strike a ball, maybe Reza could learn a thing or two about workrate, effort, and playing for the team rather than (as it appears to me at the moment) himself. Reza, you're an international and in the World Cup, make a blimmin difference for Charlton Athletic why don't you?
All our forwards aint good enough the only decent forward we had is at bournemouth and it is hurting us, goals are gonna be very hard to come by between now and end of season.
I used to stick up for Church due to him giving 100% effort every game but have changed my mind after today. The total lack of effort to even break into a jog to get back onside so we could create a chance along with his total inability to jump for a header finally changed my mind.
He runs around a bit but there is no end product or worth to what he does.
Was so shocked he played today. After his Burnley miss he had not even been on the bench the last three games. Thought would have been better to have played a confident Reza up front after he scored on Tuesday or even Piggott.
It seems to me that JR is not sure who to play up front as he continuously keeps changing it. Defence and midfield stay pretty much the same.
I have said this on another thread but when you watch the forwards shoot before the game it is totally shocking I think how many times we actually hit the target. A pro footballer under no pressure from edge of area should be pretty consistent at hitting the target imo and we sadly are not!!!! Terrible and do we not practice this in training. Obviously explains why no one will shoot during the game!!!!
Lastly is it just me or would anyone else prefer Wilson in front of Nego where he can attack more and make us more effective having a proper winger!! Don't think it will happen but from what I have heard don't think Nego was that bad at Wigan. Can't understand why it has not at least been tried......
I do not have a problem with Church. Before he was signed people were aware of his goals per game ratio. It was a 1 in 5, I'll leave other people to decide who's fault it was with. Other than that, yes he is f****** s***

But dont you have to be interfering with play to be offside? Surely he could NEVER be offside...

Simon Church: the striker who marks himself.
This This and This, Been saying this to my mate every time he plays, every ball just seems to be that little too far for him weather its in the air or on the floor.
Truly dreadful player. A Reading fan told me when he signed that he was League One level. I genuinely think he is worse than that. And not even a striker. Infact I don't know what he could do on a football pitch of any use.

And I believe this is quite a kind and thought out way to put it. After 5 hours since the game has ended, but having to have watched him all season, I still can't help but put it like this......
I could go on, and I know this is quite aggressive but I wish he would just piss off and ask for a transfer request. I have been following us for 25 years, he's up there as being one of the worst I've witnessed. Some people are very logical on here and don't read too much into a poor performance, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and try and attach the positive 'like he works hard, and runs for the team'
Today was quite the opposite. I thought we more than matched Reading in the first half with our approach play, and had we had any of our forwards apart from him, we would've tested them more in the final third. When he jumps for the ball he's watching his marker. His touch is the equivalent of the ball getting a 10,000 volt electric shock.
I remember one lifer was going to make sure CP saw all the kind thank you messages people wrote on here after he got sacked. I don't care what sort reaction I get here, but could any other lifer somehow get these views to Church so that he realises he's not wanted. I'm afraid this is how strongly I feel.
I thought that Church has played some pretty good games for us, even if he does not score the goals. How he managed the 90 today I don't know. Awful and should have been replaced latest on 55 minutes.

I reckon that whoever signed him is to blame, they knew his goals ratio, I do not have a problem with the fella, I know he is not good enough.
To play up top on your own you have to be one hell of a striker. You have to have somthing that will worry the two central defenders, pace and power being the main weapon.
Church looks like a boy playing for us. Some central defenders would breath on him and he would run a mile.

He was dreadful today - no threat to anyone - no skill, no heading ability, no good ! My worry is what do the coaching staff see in him in order to keep picking him?
All we had to do was keep it tight, keep ball as much as possible second half play for the draw and get out of there with a point. But no we introduce an inexperienced Man Utd U21 reject for our talisman skipper and game over. Riga dropped one big b*ll*ck there today with his substitutions and that's not to mention the weird choice of Church to start the game. All this rotation stuff and saving the best players for Tuesday is totally against the 'one game at a time' and 'deal with what is in front of you' principles. Why wasn't there any experience on the bench like Hughes or even Pritchard who I know has had a crap season but at least he has some mileage at this level and will give you 100%. Still struggling to get my head round Riga's selections today, unbelievable.

Harriott was just as bad, how either of them stayed on for the full 90 is beyond me.
I'd like to see Obika, Reza and Sordell to start up front with JJ, Poyet and Cousins in a midfield 3 and see how that goes, anyone but Church

but was it his fault today that we lost?

Can see him being off loaded in the summer

Reza gets a wonder goal at Leeds in a team that cannot score. He is an Iran national hero though has yet to convince most at SE7.
So start the next game with Church and bring on the goal scoring hero on as a left-half late in the second half.
If a certain other manager had done that there would have been an outcry
