Roland Duchatalet - One on One (New video interview)

  • I was always a fan of Powell and didnt want him sacked but...

I have to admit I do like this guy... maybe its just because he's only just bought the club so he's trying to make extra effort but almost every business decision he's made since joining (the Liege guys / Powell being sacked) he's spoken about that decision... (huh) Of course with the Powell case he's not explained it but he's the owner he doesnt have to its no different same if me or you won the lottery and wanted to spend the winnings on an expensive house, people may not like it because they've contributed their pound but at the end of the day your not forced into paying the money huh!

And the reasons I think people need to give him a chance are....
    - As I've said his communication is pretty darn good
    - Yes he's bought in Liege players but you get such little time during January (plus everyone is worth double their summer price), I for one intend to wait until the Summer and see what his transfer policy is then...
  • The SCP sychronised bum licking squad will be pulling apart each interview for any reason to speculate, hyperventilate and postulate we can be sure.

There is a clear divide in the support regarding pro/anti CP, there is no need to pre-empt peoples judgements and perhaps provoke a response. It's very obvious those who are anti-CP are pro RD and almost vica verca, which is a very strange situation
Absolutely not true as far as I am concerned. I was totally supportive of CP while he was here but I have also been fully supportive of RD from the start. I just can't buy into all this rather strange "grief" that seemed to effect so many people when CP was fired. As the owner RD has to make the tough decisions for the benefit of the club.
    Hence the almost :-)
  • One thing I admire from the video, which I think was genuine, was the way he couched the change of manager. Essentially he is saying the unarguable, that it is his club, he decided to sack Powell and that's actually that, end of. However Roland sold that position with a degree of delicacy and finesse which I thought was a lot better than simply saying 'so what? wotcher gonna do about it?'.
It remains to be seen if the decision keeps Charlton up, to go with his other stated aim that we should be higher and better.
There is a dig and an irony too in his question as to whether the fanbase wants to remain in the past or embrace the future. Given the degree of innovation and development from Charlton over the last thirty years or so, there is plenty of evidence that Charlton support can embrace change and get involved with it, so I hope he does not mean that those who get some comfort from the past whilst looking at an uncertain future should not have concerns, or that they are holding things back by doing so.
Even Jose Riga in his post match interview against Huddersfield said it was 'normal' for football supporters to be 'suspicious' (of change).
A carefully created and released interview though it was, it frames Roland pretty well. What will really add to his credibility is if Charlton Athletic avoid relegation. If Charlton go down I don't think the fans will take that new reality well at all.

I don't think I'd have been as upset if I was in Dubai ! (Genuine comment).
  • The silence from the doom and gloom brigade is deafening........... (admittedly all probably on their way to a game, or in another secret meeting- but like them, I've decided not to let the facts get in the way)

  • A positive step. Prepared to talk to us. Some points remain to be answered but it's step in the right direction. Thanks for this communication Roland.

Given that anything anyone says will be jumped on, what's the point?

    I think it's good he's done a video.

Chris Powell was great and he wanted to work with him. Chris did very well and worked well with all the players including the new ones.
RD did what he had to do.
Charlton fans have to look to the future. Charlton is one of the most fantastic clubs in England and it's got to get back to where it belongs.
CAFC not a feeder club as players coming from Liege to Charlton.
Huh, huh, huh, huh quite a bit.
Relationship between CAFC and SL has been 'wilfully misinterpreted'
Various platitudes about players and supporters being important.
Apparently home games are won more often than away games - breaking news there.
The fans of Charlton are very very good fans. He admires them.
    That's it.

Wanted to work with Powell...so sacked him.

Not a feeder club - despite myself saying that and the youth director at Standard
Liege - pretty much word for word.

Huh? I'll believe it when I see it.

I haven't watched the video yet as I'm at work but whatever he's said, if you're suggesting a youtube statement has suddenly transformed the situation and outlook for the club then you're deluded. I'll judge him on his actions to date, almost all of which have been detrimental to the club so far in my view. We have a worse team than when he came in, are in a worse league position, already getting worse crowds, have a worse manager (or less suitable, in my view anyway), and have swapped a 500k talismanic striker for one who it seems would struggle to get into the John Roan school first XI.

I don't care if he's said he's close to agreeing terms with Lionel Messi. I'll cut him some slack when we've survived relegation, got Poyet tied down to a new deal, and signed somebody who I've either heard of, or who has demonstrated on the pitch for us that they are actually a professional footballer and not one of his recently out-of-work family friends.
  • Been very sceptical since CP departure but feel slightly less concerned after that. Was that the plan? Definite plus on the communication. Hoping for 3pts tonight, not a lot else matters today. COYR
  • Does anyone else think he looks more like Alex Ferguson now he's had his hair cut?

Maybe he plans on picking the team sometime in the future? ;-)
  • Personally think there is a bit of a media witch hunt against Roland currently. We'll see in the summer what the real plans are.

Totally agree with this. A lot of the outrage (especially from journalists with no affiliation to Charlton) seemed to be because Powell was a thoroughly nice chap and nobody had a bad word to say about him. If we'd been managed by someone who wasn't a club legend and a great bloke then i don't think there'd have been too much fuss made of a club bottom of the table sacking it's manager.

If we stay up and kick on next season, i wonder if any of the numerous journo's who've slaughtered RD over the past week will run articles apologising.

Maybe waiting 'till he actually says something substantive?
Great that he's making these efforts to communicate and address things, very positive and despite being wary of him and my posts maybe sounding at times like one of the doom and gloom brigade as you so maturely put it; I do actually think he comes across ok and certainly am not thinking he's out to use and ruin us. That doesn't mean certain things don't give rise for concern and I'm going to follow blindly and without question like you head in the sand brigade (as I'll so maturely put it :-)).

But he doesn't actually say anything in this video. Talking without saying anything and making people believe you have is a management skill and as said by others there's nothing that's going to influence any views that are already formed. Only actions really count and are going to do that and we're all waiting to see how things pan out.

His denial of the feeder status whilst passing the 'misunderstanding', possibly intentional, onto the media whilst completely ignoring the fact that comments from within his own network gave justifiable rise to them did irk a little.
  • Happy to hear what he has to say on the club direction and plans. That said i'd appreciate a bit more honesty, like,

"i'm only going to get in loan players this season, until i know what league we're in next season, so i don't offer over the top wages for next season or two."
    or
"i will run Charlton on a shoestring and spend as little as possible, because the business model is to break even at whatever cost, which could mean selling more valuable assets at a later stage if required!"

I'm not anti RD, just anti anyone that wants to run our club into Division One if it is cheaper to run.

And those that are neither pro or anti Powell like me continue to say keep watching evaluating and judging now and forever. Amen.

    Huh?

In all seriousness, positive video. TJ/MS didn't do anything like this (except MS blog update on marathon training?! Dull...)

Roland didn't have to accept an interview.

    Good interview, well done Ollie...

  • More importantly than what RD said......there was a clear image of a regular CL contributor on the video. Be wrong of me to identify the person though.
  • Happy that he's doing interviews, step above from last time, but the content was worrying for me personally. "Chris Powell was good, so I sacked him" and boo-hoo no one likes me are the big pulling points I got. It was a poor attempt to market his vision with complete vagueness.
  • Good interview. Answers a few questions especially about the feeder club nonsense. The next interview may reveal a bit more. At least we are getting to hear something.

Steve Dowman was secretly RD all along?

How on earth can some totally fictional quotes be worrying? Just weird.
  • For all his self-assurance, I find it hard to believe a word he says. He liked Powell and really wanted to make it work, so he sacked him? Yeah, right...

Not sure who put together the video clips inbetween, but rather too much of Sheffield U for me, and also rather ironic at the point when RD was claiming we are not a feeder club for SL, showing specific footage of one player only - a certain Diego Poyet...

He clearly stated that he felt he had to make a decision and the results And performances since that decision suggest it may well have been correct. Recently I have seen a lot more Charlton games than I normally would due to the cup and Millwall away and the football is looking better.
Chris Powell was far more than just a manager - he was an icon for the fans when we knew that good players were allowed to leave the club and not adequately replaced.
But this new guy is ten years older and has players playing better. I'm afraid I don't have the football vocabulary to adequately describe the transformation but tonight I saw incremental changes in the shape and style...and the substitutions are earlier and correctly called.
Duchatelet comes across to me as decisive and innovative. Just that the Daily Mail (and others) don't like foreigners and change.
Maybe that last minute winner was jammy but we need lucky generals right now and it was a very good corner.
  • We won in the last minute v QPR too, under the previous manager. Some people have very selective memories. Sorry, call it gut feel or whatever you like, but I do not trust this bloke one inch.
