Can you break even in the Championship or L1?

Having thought long and hard about this I can't see how we can manage this given our existing level of support.
Nearly all clubs seem to be paying too high a percentage of their income in wages so the existing model just doesn't add up.
If RD can balance the books and keep the club afloat then maybe we will view him in a more positive light.

  • Personally think its possible but only with FFP being strictly enforced as it will have to force wages down to a sustainable level, which will take some time but that has to be the reality. Imagine if in whatever line of work you're in all the companies paid basically all their turnover in wages and ran at a loss. Problem is clubs do it because of the premier league riches and whilst FFP will sort it for football league clubs it will only further the gap between prem teams/parachute money teams.

Will be interesting to see and personally think the wealth needs to be spread more equally or someone needs to pick up some proper TV rights for the championship with live games shown at the frequency sky do the prem. Plenty of big clubs with large support that could draw in TV audiences to justify paying for it. Anyone know how much the champ sells TV rights for? Would be interested to know as bet its nothing and if the football league is to survive clubs need to up their TV revenue
  • Peterborough tried it and look what happened to them. Basically teams in the Championship are paying a premium to have a crack at the Premier League. Mundell wrote some great stuff for the Trust this time last year when we first forecast CAFC losses at £7M
  • If it is possible, what is required?

Large/ish crowds paying good money and players on piss poor money coming in on a free. Wait a minute, has RD seen a trick here?
  • yer probably but clubs need to be clever, you surely cannot rely on fans as the main scource. spreading out different revenue streams and trying to maximise each will cause clubs to do well. also i think a different look to players is needed, look at lyon, they are succesful and have a commitee to decide a player purchase. for charlton we need to be aiming to bring players through every year from valley gold. clubs like arsenal are clever because on a matchday there they are competing with oxford street in terms of revenue so clubs lower down need to look at this as their model. i am not sre but potentially a ticket decrease in cost could cause more fans to coem and increase other revenue steams, just a thought roland.

195 million quid - but that's down from 264 million quid on the old Sky/BBC deal.

How the Football League must hunger for the days on ON Digital - they paid 315 million quid for FL rights back in 2000!
