I've got a memory of seeing a documentary with Danny Dyer going into a pub in Burnley to meet some pwopa nawty geezers. Comical and grim in equal measure.
Ha, yeah I know what you mean about the football traditions, Lincs. From football league champs in 1960, double runners up in '62, and almost in Europe again in '74 we ended up nearly out of existence by 1987!!! Probably not a fair comparison then but it was a size thing more than anything else. We do have limited pulling power though.
Thanks for the heads up, SE18. Probably try Rose of Denmark before game, but maybe somewhere else after the game.
If you arrive early, take the train from Charlton to Woolwich Arsenal, going away from Central London, walk down to the main road three or four minutes away and cross to the old Woolwich Arsenal buildings. There's a Young's pub there called the Dial Arch--excellent beers and food-- http://www.dialarch.com/ Or take the train back to Maze Hill from Charlton,a couple of stops back towards London, and walk to the Plume of Feathers in Park Vista next to Greenwich Park,Excellent homely pub with good beers and food-- http://www.plumeoffeathers-greenwich.co.uk/ Or walk along that road, bear right and walk to the main road, cross and keep going to the Trafalgar Tavern.Great views over London,O2 and river, good food and beer, again,ho hum-- http://www.trafalgartavern.co.uk/ Sorted.
If you're coming by train mate, I'd get off at Greenwich. There are loads of good eateries and boozers in and around. Check out www.fancyapint.com normally pretty accurate with their reports. Trains pretty frequent to Charlton and only takes 7 or 8 minutes. To be honest the pubs in and around Charlton aren't much cop in my humble opinion.
Check out North Pole, Deptford, used to really like this one - plus being away from all the football traffic you get served pretty quickly too ;-)
I remember a large group of Burnley lads paying a visit to the Horse and Groom, FA Cup 3rd Round day '94. Think they were all in the decorating game cos they did their best to rearrange the interior.
Twenty years ago. How time flies.
What did they call themselves? The Naughty Forty or something.....I remember them re-arranging the pub before they moved on and did it again...
I know Lincsaddick. I've heard the stories many, many times from my grandad who I first started going on with in 1987 - the Orient game where we nearly went out of the league. I've done my apprenticeship, so to speak! :-). Wish I'd seen some of the players you mention though :-(.
We'd sold just short of 1,300 tickets as of lunchtime yesterday, so should be 1,800 ish, give or take, I'd imagine.
Im sure Ive read somewhere you are the best supporteed team per capita per head in the country Normally that would be good numbers but i thought you would packing the jimmy seed out. You are getting so close, every game is like a cup final for you.
We average 13,000 at home and it's a 4 hour trip down (ish). 1,800 would be good numbers. We're not pretending to be bigger than what we are, a la Leeds (the biggest club in the whole universe). We're a small town club that happens to get, for our town size, a decent following. Burnley and Scunthorpe, for example, are similar in size and they get
Im sure I read somewhere that you are the best supported team per capita per head in the country. I had some great nights out up in Burnley back in the 80's, fond memories.
Tel, yeah, I believe we are the best supported club per head of population in the entire league. I think it changed to Middlesbrough for a few seasons when they were in the Premier League.

@Claretforever .. enjoy your day out in the smoke even though I hope that you go home disappointed and pointless .. as I said above I wish you all the best in the promotion chase after tomorrow .. you have some good players there who could shake up the Premier so long as you don't get too hoity toity and start signing too many has beens and never will bes from exotic clubs and far away lands .. and Danny Ings; get well soon you little diamond
the antigallican used to be good for away fans but more recently (this season) it has become home fans only after the game. just a heads up. rose of denmark sometimes allows away fans after but in general i think a short trip down to Greenwich is ya best bet for a drink after the game.
I saw Burnley play Maidstone Utd down at the old Dartford ground many years back, they had a really impressive away following, really noisy......must have been in division 4
Coming in from Swindon today by rail with a mate. 12.05pm Swindon-Paddington but we're unsure how best to get to Charlton on the train.
We're thinking either Paddington to Charing Cross to Charlton, or Paddington to London Bridge to Charlton.
Any advise as to best/easiest routes?
Bakerloo line from Paddington to Baker Street, change here for Jubilee line to London Bridge. Overground trains onward to Charlton are every 10 minutes. Paddington to Charlton should take just under an hour.
