CHARLTON began life without Chris Powell in charge by claiming a point - but had enough chances to kick off Jose Riga's managerial career in SE7 with a win.
A number of Johnnie Jackson corner kicks created scoring chances for the Addicks, which were not finished off, while Marvin Sordell also failed to convert twice after being played through.
A point was not a disaster for Charlton - whose next action is a South London derby against Millwall, themselves embroiled in the relegation dogfight.
Addicks fans showed their respect for Powell, sacked by owner Roland Duchatelet on Monday night, with a 60-second spell of chanting his name in the third minute - the same number as the shirt he wore during his playing days in SE7.
Some of the hosts' play in the opening 45 minutes was slick. Although their best scoring chances came from Johnnie Jackson corners.
Three times the skipper put in deliveries to unmarked Addicks players but Michael Morrison and Reza Ghoochannejhad both struck first-time volleys wide while Astrit Ajdarevic headed narrowly off target.
Another decent spell of play saw Callum Harriott dummy the ball to allow Rhoys Wiggins to romp down the left, his low cross found Ghoochannejhad but his effort was blocked by a Terriers defender.
Charlton keeper Ben Hamer also pulled off two important saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Sordell had a good chance to put the hosts ahead two minutes into the second half. Harriott intercepted Jonathan Hogg's pass and played in Sordell, but the on-loan Bolton striker squirted his shot across the face of goal.
Dorian Dervite was forced to clear off his own line after Nakhi Wells took the ball beyond Ben Hamer but it was about the only decent chance that the Terriers could muster after the restart.
Sordell had the last chance of the match in the 76th minute. Diego Poyet played a pinpoint ball through the middle and although the striker controlled and bore down on goal he was denied by Smithies.
