Players yesterday....

Very interesting that there wasn't a single comment, either to a jorno or on twitter, other than Diago Poyet.

Looks clear to me there was an imposed order for radio silence, and Poyet broke that.

Before yesterday I thought there was very little chance of seeing Poyet sign a new contract, i'm even more certain now.

  • I can't log on Twitter on my mobile phone as it is blocked in China. AFKA is it possible for you to post what he said? Thanks in advance.
  • He said: 'Massive thanks to the man who gave me my debut in football. Couldn't thank him enough for what he has done for me' followed by a sad face and a thumbs up icon.

This was tweeted alongside a photo of the pair hugging after the Wednesday win
  • Poyet will be gone I agree from he's comment yesterday he wants out by the sounds.
  • Yeah I reckon he's off as well judging by that . What a shame
  • As I said on the Hamer thread, It's no coincidence that the only player to break the silence is the one promising youngster who refuses to sign a new deal. I see it as a big "F**k you" aimed towards uncle roland.............
  • Poyet going was always going to happen regardless of this
  • Someone also said to him promise if you leave it will not be to one of Rolands newteok clubs.

    He replied. I Promise.

Seems to me he is as good as gone. I think he might have stayed with CP though.
  • Can't blame Poyet at all for wanting out in these circumstances and I genuinely believe he would have stayed if Powell did. He knows under Powell he would be near enough 1st choice CM for next season. From the outside, he seems to have been well advised by his old man - people have been talking him up since he was 16 yet he's waited his turn with us. Recent interview said he didn't expect to make 1st team this season, yet he was happy with this. I'm convinced he'd have given us another season and then moved on. He went to a decent school, seems a clever lad - he probably knows the outlook for him by staying at us is a move to Lierge and I'm sure that aint exactly the dream for him...

that was more the comment that made me think he was off

  • Its another variable that we will never know the answer too

  • Thanks @MummysLittleSoldier.

Our players may not be good enough to go to the next level (yet) but there're quite a few that I do like very much and I'll be sad to see them leave in the summer. Poyet is of course one of them. I know he won't be here forever - we all know he'll move on at some stage - but up until yesterday I was hoping that he would at least still be here next season (if we manage to stay up). Now his departure looks a certainty. What's the point of those previous talks about academy development when you can't (or make no effort to) even keep these great talents for a whole season, Roland? Oh I forgot, we're just the feeder club for your Belgian outfit.
  • I took it from the Jackson comments that most said their goodbyes face to face and didn't feel it necessary to say it over twitter. Some things are more heartfelt and personal and don't need airing to a wider audience.

Poyet might not have been there, or as he has less followers than most thought it felt right to say something.

Theres no doubt in my mind he will be gone but I'm not sure the other players are being told to keep quiet, certainly doesnt 'look clear' as AFKA says.
  • I wouldn't be at all surprised if we discovered that Powell told (advised) them all to keep quiet and to do what's best for them, opposed to showing loyalty to the recent;y sacked manager.

Most of these players will have had more than one manager and they are, probably, all pragmatic enough to know that publicly you show support to the current regime and say what you really think in private.

The new management structure might suit some of the players, and in either event they can't change it now.
  • Don't worry, Richard Murray said that the days of selling our young stars too early and too cheaply, was over!
  • Powell isnt on Twitter either so am wondering if the players thought there was little point putting something when he wouldnt be able to read it
  • diego will join hes dad at sunderland imo
  • the players looked pretty happy in training on sky sports news yestaday
  • I hope that Powell gets a job at a league 1 or Champ team and that a lot of the players when their contracts expire as they will no doubt be allowed to at this point, will rejoin him, and that they win League One or do well in the Champ there haha.

It would just be nice to see it confirmed that they all liked him, which I am sure they did, and were it not for Roland, it would have continued.
  • I think there's a good chance he'll join another Championship club which will be even harder to take. (Poyet not Powell)

    ok cheers i missed that
  • I rather suspect that this respect and liking for CP will be seen to be rather overblown. Of course they liked and respected him, but players will do exactly what they always do - look after themselves first! In a sense, why should they do anything else? Managers they like and respect will get sacked at pretty much any club they go to and how many times do you hear of players trailing round the league like a lost puppy trying to stick with a manager?

If the club survives avoids relegation, looks like it is going forward, and offers them a big contract, they will decide that they 'really like and respect' JR. If we get relegated then I am sure that many will conclude that they 'cannot stay at Charlton without CP'.

And Poyet was pretty much certain to go in the Summer either way if a Premiership club comes in for him.

Lots of ifs, maybes and assumptions there StevieK. If we survive relegation, players like Poyet want to stay at Charlton and RD wants to give them a proper contract.

I read on Not 606 that Poyet had agreed a contract with KM and incredibly RD did not sign it off. For such a fantastic player, if this is indeed true, just shows you how utterly clueless RD is.
  • I am pretty sure too that Chrissy wold have told them not to post anything and do their best for the fans.

What's the provenance of that, please?
  • I like Poyet potentially great player and, by the sounds, a level headed young man.

Seems since his debut, he was just playing for the shop window though and he, and the club openly knew gone in the summer.
