Jose Riga - profile

Moving away from the rights and or wrongs of CP's sacking (we cant change anything) I think it's worth looking at this guy's "CV".

What do we know about new the new Charlton manager?
Welcome to The Valley Jose Riga. The 56-year-old was born in Oupeye, north of the Belgium city of Liege. Married with two children, Riga played for Belgian sides RJS Haccourt and RCS Vise before moving into coaching.
On paper, his record of getting teams promoted from the lower reaches of Belgian football is not too shabby having got Vise up to the second division in two separate spells as well as leading RAEC Mons to the top flight.
Having previously been on the coaching staff of Standard Liege, Riga was handed the first team post in 2011.

Is that where the link with Liege and Charlton owner Duchatelet comes from?
Duchatelet handed him the Standard Liege job after buying the Belgian side. They made it to the last eight of the Europa League but failed to make it to Europe the following season after finishing fifth in the Belgian first division following the championship play-offs.
Riga then decided to quit his post and head to the sunshine of Qatar to work at the Aspire Academy, preparing youngsters for the 2022 World Cup.

So is he ready for a relegation battle in the Championship?
Well his qualifications certainly sound impressive. He has a UEFA Pro Licence and teaches coaching courses for the Belgian FA. He has studied the training techniques of Gerard Houllier, Eric Gerets and Trond Sollied, has also acted as a scout for the Belgian national side and worked as a television pundit in his homeland.
Most recently Riga has been working with AC Milan’s youngsters, implementing the CogiTraining technique he helped develop.

Cogi what?
Here goes the spiel: ‘Modern football goes all about rhythm, timing, spacing and exceptional technical and mental skills. The CogiTraining Method allows initially “normal” players to internalise the essential ingredient of modern football, that is: speed of vision, speed of decision-making, speed of execution.’
To help you with this process expect to see Charlton’s players making use of the ‘Sense Ball’, which essentially looks like a football in a net bag.

If I was a Charlton fan should I be worried?
Well hopefully Riga won’t be trying to reinvent the wheel between now and the end of the season with Charlton stuck at the foot of the Championship table. But his ideas appear to have been embraced by AC Milan while Jose Mourinho invited him to coach Real Madrid’s players for a week. Whether that will help with a relegation battle remains to be seen.

And if it doesn’t?
Well, with a degree in computer sciences and 20 years’ experience working in IT departments in the insurance trade at least Riga has another career to fall back on.

  • Clearly another YES MAN.
  • let's hope it does not come to 'who shot JR' (one for the older reader) ... ((:>)
  • Thanks for the pointers Dan. Thanks for the points Jose would be a nice way to follow that but how likely is he really to understand in time what's needed to see off the likes of Yeovil, Barnsley and Millwall? I pray he can but I doubt it.
  • Sack him.
  • Seems like he's a forward thinking coach open to new ideas. Interested to see what kind of players he likes and what kind of playstyle he implements. Powell clearly liked workers whereas some managers prefer technical players, we'll see
  • His knowledge about training seems exciting, but that won't work in the short-term. Will be something that would improve us for next season.

Does he have the managerial ability in the short-term? Who knows.
  • Didn't I read that he didn't rate Benteke, and thought he should have played in midfield?
  • I think RD is looking long term. He doesn't seem that bothered if we go down/get to Wembley in 2014. He's interested in 5/10 years time.
  • A key thing is ...can he speak English?

    Yep.

I thought the key was that he was over 6ft.........

  • AC Milan are absolutely smashing it this year too...

Welcome Jose. It'll be tough stepping into SCP shoes, especially in the eyes of a lot of fans, but if you and your net bag can get us out of the bottom 3 it'll go a long way to appeasing those angry at the sacking.

Thats ball in the bag looks like something Toys r us was selling in the 90's
  • If he is so great how come he wasn't the manager of AC Milan or somebody then? He was in a position he could easily get out of to come to Charlton, doesn't look as if he was handcuffed to any table by anybody.
Jose Riga, I say again, if you're so wonderful then deliver us a win in our next two games, and a position well clear of relegation.
Then next season risk your job by trying to keep our good players against all the odds, because you are utterly loyal to Charlton Athletic the club you manage.
You can probably survive though if we go down, and can write up your coaching theories on your Hudl whilst sitting on the bench watching Standard Liege reserves play in a virtually empty stadium.
Jose Riga you have to deliver deliver and deliver, again and again and again and there is no time to settle in. I know that for myself if Huddersfield Town take an early lead tomorrow I won't be waiting until half time to start booing.
Childish I know, but that's the way I feel right now.
    Hashtag still distraught even now.

so just like SCP when he joined from Leicester then?

Yeah 10th in Serie A great season...
  • SCP asked Erikson for his blessing, and was very reluctantly let go.

  • Sounds fine but unless he gets new players what's he going to do with the same bunch that Powell couldn't? Serious question.

He may well be able to coach passing and technique but if he's stuck with the likes of Church and the like then will he be impressed?
  • Jose might be well advise to assume he is not welcome, even though there are many who do welcome him I admit, and his job is to win us over, by winning. If he is so great he ought to handle the suspicion, mistrust, and critical vigilance he is going to get non stop for quite a while.
Time is a healer, and Roland says time will tell, well we have 26 hours to go Jose, you'd better be ready.

and you're aware that wasn't the case with JR how?
  • He's damned either way. If we go a goal or two down tomorrow then Riga may experience one of the worst managerial baptisms of all time in terms of the crowd reception. If we win then people will just say it's CP's side.
  • As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
    Each wife had seven sacks,
    Each sack had seven cats,
    Each cat had seven kits:
    Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

are you okay? do you need me to call an ambulance i dont want you to have a heart attack...
  • CorgiTraining/Passing Techniques!!! Will work well on our pitch. Good luck!
  • It seems that we wish he does badly just so we can have a go at him and the board. If it goes well and we stay up will we give him any recognition for it or just say he got lucky?

Looks a bit like Benitez at Chelsea last year, they hated him and he goes and wins the Europa League and qualifies for the Champions League but they still hate him.

I used to have a bag attached to what was essentially a retractable dog lead. Put the ball in the bag and you can either set a length, or have is so you kick the ball and it comes back.

Needless to say after afternoons spent using this I turned out to be shite!

Ok Charlton Dan, we prised Jose Riga away from AC Milan, where they were abject at his departure, and he is a great guy. So he can now prove it by winning tomorrow and on Saturday.
    All right?
