  • Most normal humans will remember an exceptional event (eg Wembley) than a non event - eg not staying in the Chumpionship for a year.
    Simple to understand really.
PS Tomorrow is the most excited I have been going to a game this season.
    I wonder why?
  • If you could guarantee me a cup win I would take that all day but just a semi at we mobley, not ta.
  • Its rather simple... Were not the size of the big clubs so whether its this season, in 5 years or 10 years we will be relegated again

i.e. count the number of times weve been relegated since our last Semi Final appearance in 1947 so when these rare days come along you might as well take them (never know this opportunity might not happen in our lifetime)
  • Don't you ever give it a rest Scabby.
    Enjoy the cup game tomorrow.
We can worry about the league/our semi final on Monday.
  • I'm with you scabby. Much rather stay in the Championship than get to an FA cup semi. It would appear that most people are too excited about tomorrow to even notice that we are now bottom of the league. I have been in a right grumpy mood all evening. Yeah, we have games in hand but this is Charlton so that means nothing.

Of course securing our championship status is the most important but I'm going to enjoy tomorrows game win or lose but the league is far more important!
  • There is no "one or the other" I don't understand that.

We play football to win every game and the FA cup is certainly not an unwelcome distraction from our battle for survival.

It puts a light on in a dark alley. It's the best domestic trophy in the world.

  • Oh come on! 4 games In hand plus we still have to play millwall Barnsley AND Yeovil again. Have a little faith people
  • Whats to say weve not noticed were bottom of the League... I looked at the results today and swore when I saw Millwall, Yeovil and Barnsley had won but I also noticed that Sheffield Wednesday had lost so to me that is better because it means there isnt a gap creating.

At the same time whenever you hear Football Players / Managers speak about Fixtures they always discuss the next game... for us fans that is also Sheffield United so that is a game we can be excited about as not only a win would take us to Wembley but as Jackson said midweek the win can create a huge buzz around the club and that can be taken into the Huddersfield and Millwall matches (Taking us out of the relegation zone)

And I'll be worried once weve caught the teams around us on matches played (34 Games) but until then whats the point in worrying as if we win those four we go 17th and a handful of wins behind 12th... LONG WAY TO GO YET

  • Don't even care that we went bottom today if I'm being honest. The only reason we went bottom is because we're further in the fa cup than everyone else.
  • Why do people keep talking about this stay up or get to Wembley stuff like it's one or the other? Why not both? Also Scabby, you've always been negative but it's getting close to trolling now. Have a little review.
  • Course it's horrible to look at our position in the table and feel the nervous knot in your stomach tightening but I for one am just going to put it to the back of my mind for a few hours and just for once, enjoy the buzz of a possible semi-final appearance. It's going to be a full house, it's going to be loud and I'm just going to ride the excitement that I'm feeling cos being a Charlton fan, it's not one I often get. At 41 I should know better but I'll start to worry about the bread and butter stuff on Monday morning.

    Until then........ COYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something else that crossed my mind (I'm sure it's not an original thought though) - what a selling point a chance to play at Wembley would be when the club are trying to convince players to join us on loan. They may prefer to join Ipswich's possible playoff challenge right now, but would the same be true if they might get to play in a cup final? And if we do get relegated, which might bloody we'll happen anyway, cup run or no cup run, how important might the extra gate revenue and prize money be in balancing the books and enabling us to hang onto our better players ready for an all out assault to get promoted at the first attempt?

  • If we're going to lose by 3 goals what would be the point of optimism. With scabby on this one.
  • I agree, much rather stay up than go to Wembley. Another season or 3 in League One doesn't bare thinking about.

We can easily do both. Don't get the mindset where you're hoping we lose a game.

Support the club in every game they're in, a win gives us more confidence for the remaining league games rather than being out of the cup and bottom.

Wonder if you'd complain if we ended up winning the cup because it means we'll have extra fixtures in Europe which will impact our season form next year?
  • I didn't know we had to make a choice?
  • Of course, the reality is that it is not an either/or situation. There are 4 possibilities - Wembley/stay up, Wembley down, No Wembley/stay up and No Wembley/down.

I think we should do our best to enjoy the Sheff U game but getting some points on the board is becoming rather urgent. We don't really want to be playing the likes of Stevenage, Burton or Fleetwood next season. It's easy, I think, to remember our last season in League One, which was fun. It may not be like that next time.

  • It's started already
  • With you 100% mate.l can't get excited about a cup game and a chance of going to Wembley when we are sitting bottom of the league. This weekend is crucial to the rest of our season after yesterday's results...a draw today would be a disaster I fear. The next 2 league games are more important without a doubt and I hope all those going today are at the Valley on Wednesday and if we go down there next season. I will be getting my season ticket Monday and will continue going what ever league we are in...how many going today will commit the same. It always surprises we on here the amount of the more vocal so called fans that are not season ticket holder's and alot miss games as they can't be bothered to go and have plenty to say after hope you are there next season on a cold Tuesday v Carlisle!!!! Your club is for life not just for Wembley
  • One of the best days of my life was the playoff final at wembley with friends and family so if we can have another day even nearly the same then maybe you will understand the nerves and excitement!! Of course we all pray we stay up but today is FA Cup day and I've not felt this buzz for a while. Ignore the league for one day and enjoy it it!!
  • I've stayed up all night and fucked a tea cup. Have some belief, it can be done.
  • Win or lose today we'll prolly still go down
But today is about today and if we win the joy of a Wembley appearance will soften the blow ever so slightly and if we lose we can concentrate on the league
Come on Charlton have a personality for once and get us to Wembley
  • If we get through and its a big if knowing Charlton. I would love it (a la Keegan) if the club went thru all the threads and said f*** those who didnt care about the cup, didn't care about going to oxford and we should withdraw coz of our pitch and didn't let em have a ticket when they all start wetting themselves over a trip to Wembley.
Maybe one for the trust to look at............

The money with the cup run is very useful. It is additional income that can be spent on the team. In FFP terms, it is very good. Millwall have spent a lot on the team this season, maybe because of the additional income because of their cup run a couple of seasons ago ? It could have the same positive effect for Charlton.

Football would pretty dull if everything was a foregone conclusion. We might go down, we could stay up, we might win the cup, maybe we will have a stinker of a game to day and lose. If I could foresee events in advance I'd be rich man.
I've supported this club long enough and I know the good times can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Try and enjoy the build up, the game and pint.

(I think we go down but the third division is where I started back in the '70s, so I've known worse times than a winnable Quarter final against a lower league team.)
