Since I Was Young

Can someone please clear this up for me? In this song what does the line 'I followed on' actually mean? Followed on from what?

I've always assumed the song went 'Since I was young, I followed 'em, C-A-F-C, the team for me'. But having seen today's season ticket promotional material I've discovered I've been wrong all this time. Confused.

  • i assume that for younger fans coming through you wouldnt just think 'ill support charlton' i think its more of a case of following on from your dad/granddad as they support them already
  • Cheers AdamAddick, that makes sense.
  • Can we please please please PLEASE sing this slower. 150mph it sounds shit.
  • Could've been followed through ;0)

And VFR, which has become a bit of a joke these days...
  • Too fast, too slow, it doesn't matter.

    Another generic, moronic, non-Charlton 'song'.

However, the people that actually sing, love it,so that's that.
  • ' non charlton song'

    Weird

So, this song is unique to us?

  • Can't stand it, but I sing it reluctantly!

Is there any song unique to Charlton...

Valley Floyd Road maybe in terms of the lyrics but we share those with Nottingham Forest
    Goodbye Horse maybe?

"Oh South London" / "We all follow the Charlton over land and see" / "Red Army" they're all generic songs

Goodbye Horse apart, true enough, but there's something about When I was that reminds me of Scotland.

  • Really? Reminds me of them ultra Palace pratts!
  • It is a bit palacey, and we sing it too often, and for too long, and too fast, and the clapping means I can't hold my bovril. SIDDARN!
  • CAN WE ALL STOP MOANING

Think both Leeds and Arsenal sing versions of Goodbye Horse. No idea who was first though.

  • Getting a bit 'nostalgic' here but I remember back in the late sixties into the seventies from the 'covered end'..............
LA LA LA LALALALA LALALALA.....CHARLTON............and I still sing it to myself and I can still here it!!!!!!
    I loved it!!

You hum it son I'll play it :0)
  • Why can't we just keep the noise down and enjoy our bovril in peace.
  • It means our opponent's have enforced the follow on.

    Correct, think its Motherwell

Goodbye Horse certainly sung by leeds many many years ago, think it's more likely we heard it from them rather then the other way round
