what if 2006/07 was different?

i dont mind that we went through the trouble because we needed a reality check and tbh we stopped being ourselves, instead turning into a different club. surely you must have thought what if we appointed a good manager at the start of that season and got a better squad. where would we be, potentially top 6. surely for about a 7 season period we were at theh ighest level in our history, imagine if we took it to the next level and became a fringe europe side. does anyone think we will get back to that point. bearing in mind that it took 7 years building for the premier league.

  • Curbs left a thread bare squad at the end of the previous season, and who ever came in next had to spend a sackfull to make it ok. Sadly we got Dowie.
  • i seem to remember having some decent signings though. andy reid, carson, diawara. if we just had another striker and winger then we could have been different but dowie was a poor appointment considering he got a team relegated literally about 2 months prior to his appointment. still leaves me thinking about thsoe points in history where one choice changes everything. if we appointed pardew then how could we have done. i don't like pardew but he owuld have done much better.
  • I didn't see much of that season as was working in Singapore and went travelling for a bit after redundancy ( watched the west ham game first day after arrived in Thailand ) but I always felt Dowie would have kept us up if they had stayed with him - not sure why. Think it was the Les Reed appointment that really sealed the deal and I was very happy when Pardew came along too.
  • tbh, whilst dowie was poor, bringing in les reed was very poor and caused us even more trouble as he played something like 6 games as manager and got the one win against blackburn.
  • We would have stayed up if we had kept Dowie.
  • Dowie was a poor appointment and no he would not have kept us up IMO and Les Reed was a laughing stock during his reign, never thought there was a possibility we were going to stay up until we got Pardew in. We would have been top 10 if we brought in a decent manager with an eye for a player as dowie was given the most money any manager in our history had been given.
