Neil Redfearn Autobiography

There is another thread re sporting bio's; however, as this is slightly off tack I opened up another one if that is ok.
When in Waterstones I squirelled myself into a corner and read the Charlton bit.
He said Curbs was the best manager he played under;however, he could not understand why he played the holding role and Kinsella played in an advanced role.
He also stated that when he was approached by the journo he said that Barnsley play it from the back; however,Charlton like to get it forward quickly.
He was appalled when the paper put an entirely different spin on it. He went looking for the journo at future games; alas to no avail.
Do I believe him? For what it is worth, yes.

  • chatting to an ASDA cashier (female) after the Barnsley game .. she said that The Red Fearn is quite a hero in Barnsley, especially to the ladies ... ((:>)
  • Ha Ha. I take it our Neil could be a bit lively?
  • A good player but maybe just past his best by the time he came to us. Stuart ended being the player for us that Redfearn could / should have been.
  • he was proper awful. bar THAT goal at selhurst vs the dons

You are right chaps.I also remember at Selhurst he got hemmed in the corner and somehow he dug out this cross; unfortunately Robbo and Newton looked at the the ball as it was an alien being and Robbie Earle got between them and headed it over the bar.
Unbelievable bit of skill, alas few and far between.
  • My gran showed more pace than he did for us, and she'd been in the ground for quite a few years.
    Shocking waste of money.
  • Would like to know why curbishley bought a player who scored 14 goals in the premiership the previous season playing just behind the front two & then played him as a defensive midfielder ?

We definitely didn't play to his strengths, ans clearly you need to build a system around him rather than plonking him in midfield. Darren Ambrose a few years later was similar, he had that really good spell at the Nigels where they played to his strengths and he scored many goals.
I once had a chat with a Barnsley fan and we agreed that Redfearn was a great player for those round up clips you used to get on MOTD instead of highlights, as each game he'd have a couple of decent efforts on goal which in the 1 minute shown on TV make him look like a key player, when in reality they were probably his only significant contributions all game!
  • Probably one of the worst players for "hiding" in a game I have seen at The Valley. He seemed to work hard finding positions where his colleagues could not pass to him. Seemed totally lacking in confidence and rarely featured in the games I witnessed. Perhaps I expected more from him but I can definitely remember him on the pitch but not wanting to get involved. A big disappointment. Never appeared to settle in at Charlton.

This, can't believe we blew £1m wasn't it? On him.
Edit; still that pales into insignificance when you compare it to Dowie wasting that amount x12?

Was early 30s too if I remember rightly, hell of a lot of a money.

A youthful looking chap too :-)

  • And that penalty miss against Forest didn't help his cause.
  • Was pretty awesome the year before and seemed a snip at the time. It just didn't work out.
Not sure why he's regarded a waste of money - just wasn't meant to be
  • Thought the rumour at the time was that redfern and curbs had a falling out. They then came to a agreement that we would let him leave at the end of the season if redfern accepted the way curbs wanted to use him.

Thought the general consensus was that we were not ready for prem. Remember a round of applause after the final home game (us recognising the players had done the best they could).

My memory is poor so please correct if wrong.
  • Interestingly Redfearn is remembered fondly by most of his previous clubs. When 4 4 2 published the best 11's of every football league side he got in 3 of them Barnsley , Doncaster and Oldham . Although he will be remembered mainly as a player who drifted around northern clubs as well as his season with us he spent a couple of seasons with Palace and Watford in the early stages of his career.
