Bossing The Midfield

Do people think that Jordan Cousins and Diego Poyet , can play together in the middle?

Jordan playing on the right is not as effective as he has been in the middle, but could Jordan and Diego work well and run the middle of the park.

Or do you think they are too similar (defensively minded, and inexperienced) personally at the moment I'd like to see Chris give it a go, what do you think?

We haven't got any good natural wingers so need to change the formation to fit the players rather than play players out of position

According to Twitter, cousins would have been on the right with Jackson and poyet in the middle. Don't know if this is true
  • Poyet and Cousins had a very effective partnership in the midfield for the under-21's. It worked before so for me it would make sense to use the understanding they had rather than play Cousins out of position on the right. If Jacko plays alongside Poyet we also lose his goal threat. His legs may be on the way out but his brain isn't.

    Solly-Cort-Morrison-Wiggins
    Poyet-Cousins
    Astric-Jackson-gucci
    Piotr

My proposed best 11 in our squad if everyone's 100% fit. Maybe a tad adrift but close enough.
  • 2 DCMs behind and an ACM and two wingers seems to be the trend at the moment mainly in the Premier League and Europe. As long as we're putting the strongest players in their natural positions it should work.

    ---- Poyet - Cousins ----
    Reza - Ajdarevic - Harriott/loan
    --------- Pete ---------

If I see Cousins in a right wing / midfield position in a 442 again then I will be very disappointed.

Cousins as the right sitting midfield in front of the back 4 as Dave21 says is good. I think Astric needs to be central. Wilson / Reza right midfield and Loic / Cousins right back. Jackson to come in as impact / experience / goals late on. Loic is on a 3.5 year contract so Charlton should play him and see whether he is good enough. Solly plays when fit.

Overall, I think that Cousins and Poyet may be best backing each other up in the sitting position in midfield to help keep hunger and maintain fitness. We got to see whether Astrid can work out in the central midfield position. Jackson or Cousins to back up Astrid for options.
  • I take it no-one's dreaming of a team of Kermorgants anymore then?.............................
  • we don't have a midfield 'boss' .. we need to find one .. I can honestly say from what I have seen, that we have nobody on the books who could fulfil this role in the near future
  • They should be perfect for a 4-2-3-1 as said above, but we need some decent wingers to play in the 3 behind Piotr or Reza.

  • Agree with the other comments, but I really don't see them as the central pairing in a traditional 4-4-2 line up. Although they have different styles they are both more defensively minded and we do need at least one of the central pairing to be more creative as an attacking force.

Maybe Roland or whoever is advising him on football matters thinks that Astrid can do the job. It needs demonstrating to them, whether it work or not. Loic should play at right back and Anil K to play as impact sub initially on the right wing. Loic should be fine with support of Wilson, Morrisson and Cousins who all know the right back position well.

Roland and his football advisor has given the cards for the Charlton management team to play, and in the absence of any strengthening lets see how it works. Never know it might work. If not then theory has been tested, the players get stronger for next season or miracle upon miracle, Roland may actually realise that some emergency loan strengthening is needed to avoid relegation.

I meant to add: I can see Cousins fulfilling the boss rule in the future, provided he stays with us .. he is not quite the man for that job .. yet
  • Most good managers know their best players, play them in their best positions and build a team around them. Unfortunately, most on here think Cousins and Poyet or the best players, so play them in the middle and the rest around them SCP thinks Jackson is the best, and everyone has to fit round him. Is he right?
  • Yes, in a 4-4-2 to 4-2-4 system with attacking wingers. Cousins could link up with the front two with late runs, with Poyet as the holding CM. They are athletic enough to cover the central areas allowing the right and left sided players to attack the opposition full backs. We could change to 4-5-1 and add a third central midfielder when we come up against teams with 3 CMs, like Derby County.

CP is not asking Cousins to play as a right winger though, is he? He's asking him to play the role that Graham Stuart played so effectively for Curbs, and Graham Stuart was never a winger.

FFS. The obtuseness / pedanticness on this site can be a real pain in the neck sometimes. I thought I covered it by the indicating the right midfield position. You know the one that Cousins played for 2 games in which didn't work out. I know that he is not being played as a bleedin'; winger. Do you Red Pete or Stone or Thai Malyasia Addick think that Cousins was a great success at right midfield in the Birmingham game or the other time he played at right midfield ? Many supporters don't seem to think that is a good position for him. I don't think I am being controversial with my comments.

I am also not talking about the holding role / or playing alongside Poyet on the right in front of the back 4 as part of a 4213.

Jordan Cousins is a great player but Graham Stuart he ain't. It would be helpful if CP put the player in the positions they are strongest in.

I have seen a brilliant run from Cousins at the Valley breaking forward from the right back position as a diagonal breaking centre. He could do that from 4213 or right back position. There was an excellent discussion on another thread about whether Cousins could play at right back where he has done for the U21. But I think Loic needs to be playing at right back. Without a decent winger / right midfield, Wilson is the best option that Charlton currently have.

I will be disappointed if I see CP asking Cousins to play that role at right midfield again.
