Is it time for 4G artificial pitches ?

Is it time for 4G artificial pitches ?

They are nothing like the plastic pitches of old and would prevent seasons like the one we are having.

I'm fed up , as are thousands of other fans , of needlessly shelling out hard earned cash only for games to be called off.

Is it time the Football league allowed clubs to use them? I think so.

  • Defiantly.
  • Watched a Maidstone game on what I think is 4G - Great - seemed to play like grass. There was a match on the same pitch earlier plus training.

I think Watford is a 4G, no? Certainly some kind of hybrid.

    Anyway, I agree

  • I'd be all for it...................
  • I live in Maidstone and they are campaigning about the conference allowing 4G pitches. Think makes sense as Maidstone have not had a game postponed at home yet. Surely the more truer the pitch the more the players would like it. They train on 4G type pitches and I am sure I read something about most premier league grounds being a mixture if 4/3G and grass. Think it will happen eventually.
  • Went to Maidstone v Cray this week and the pitch seemed a lot closer to grass than the old artificial at luton/qpr etc, there were no weird bounces and players tackled as on grass.
  • No doubt it will eventually happen although I have no personal knowledge about how good or otherwise they are.
  • In an interview with the Times yesterday Alex Horne, FA general secretary, "acknowledges that's it's time for the FA Board to approve the use of synthetic turf across all competitions". Perhaps Roland knows something we don't.

He's got some progressive views has Mr Horne. He's also interested in the use of video technology to help referees with contentious decisions.
  • My son was lucky enough to play on the pitch at Twickenham rugby stadium last year. Some of he boys complained that the grass
was sharp. This is a mixture of real grass and synthetic. You can obviously do everything on it - bring it on I say
  • Nah, it's a rip-off - just wait for 5G to come out.

  • what network would it be on?
  • Crawley called their game off at 12.15 the away team....Carlisle!
  • Will be the way. Bring it on.
  • Definately the way forward. Queen of the South have this, they were live on BBC Alba for their cup tie v Rangers this season and at half time there was a ten minute review of the pitch and the science behind it. As has been said above, these bear no relation to the plastic pitches we know from the past, they play like grass would.
  • I've played a few games on it this season and although it's decent, it's quite sore on the joints. Plus if its wet the ball just skids away the whole time. Nothing beats a grass pitch.
  • Never get 3G. By the time you get signal, Charlton will be in the Prem.
  • It is crucial that football always remains football. Nothing beats a good grass pitch. However if there is an even better generation of artificial pitches to arrive, and if player injury does not get worse than the kinds of hazards they face now, then they are surely inevitable, and probably a very good thing.

At the moment we have climate change and unpredictable rain and all sorts. It has been said that the way grass pitches evolve through a British winter is part of the fun of the game, of the season, and I think that is a well made point.

However there is also fun in a facility that can be used by so many so often. There is also fun in knowing you're not schlepping from Barnsley to Charlton, or Charlton to Sheffield for nothing!

Saracens Rugby have one, so I reckon there is the kind of bodily impact cushioning that Rugby players need, we have to be sure that strains and twists, inpact and joint injuries are not worse for Footballers by the right kind of absorbency. The technology will quite soon have artificial surfaces 95% as good as the very best grass pitches, but they will stay at that level and not deteriorate as grass pitches do.
  • Surely what we need is much better drainage which might not necessarily involve artificial turf.
  • There's a lot more to it than getting games on for lower and non-league teams.

The pitch at Maidstone is used around 5 nights a week so it brings in important extra revenue for the club to invest. The reserves, youth and ladies teams all play on it.

Some teams will be playing 3 times a week at the end of the season. Stones will just need to fill in their postponed away fixtures.
  • How many seasons in living memory has seen a postponement at The Valley for a waterlogged pitch? The weather conditions are crazy this year. Nothing like a modern panic reaction to every little problem.

  • Its a discussion about artificial pitches more than a panic reaction in my view.
  • Think there is a good case for them anyway
