Our Worst Kept Secret (Diego Poyet) - Now Officially Out ;-(

edited February 2014 in General Charlton
Racing Post every Monday has a "5 Things We Learned From The Weekend". These are todays:

1. Tottenham and Everton are probably playing for fifth
2. Arsenal need Ozil to show up in big matches
3. Solskjaer has a massive job on his hands
4. West Ham's survival prospects don't depend on Carroll
5. Diego Poyet has the potential to play in the Premier League

Massive compliment to the lad. However, the journo describes him as a potential "fine top-flight "Makele" in five years which, notwithstanding the fact the former Chelsea player was best in the world at doing that job, probably unjustly limits his capabilities.

  • He will soon be sold then
  • RD will be rubbing his hands.
  • I don't think RD will roll over and take the first offer, like when Shelvey came through.
  • right... hopefully not

Ring ring hi Chris it's Gus

I wouldn't expect RD to take the first offer either. If he really turns out to be that good there will be serious competition to sign him. However given that we're unlikely to be in the Premiership for a couple of seasons (at best) if we hang on too long then all we'll do is hold him back, and that isn't either good or fair for him on the one hand or us on the other.

If I recall correctly, he's been with us almost from pretty much day one - should we not get some financials later on whenever he signs somewhere?

Interesting thought here but if by some quirk of fate his Dad should end up as our Manager (and some folk have been suggesting just that in some of the threads related to that topic) would that give an impetus to him moving on somewhere or would he stick it out here if RD didn't want to realise his asset? Would make match selection challenging if both Poyets were at CAFC!
  • Sorry I should know this but memory like a sieve - what is Poyet's contractual status?
  • he looked an absolute class act on Saturday
  • Key points here:

    1. He has only made a few 1st team appearances for our club.
    2. He played really well against Birmingham. A cut above the rest of our team.
    3. Our Acadmy, in my opinion, is a goldmine. Solly, cousins, poyet. Paul Hart is key.
    4. I think if he is consistently good, we should not accept anything less then 5 million at the end of the season.
    5. If he makes the right choices at the right time he could be playing top flight football for a top 5 team.
    6. He might just be happy playing for Charlton, learning his trade, which I'm sure minus a league position, he probably is happy enough just to be given the chance to show himself off.

  • I'm still in disbelief that the lad is only 18!

He gets 200 free minute, 150 free texts and 1gb of data on an 18 month contract for £25 p/month with 7 months remaining.

  • no contract announcement on him, reckon he is gone in the summer for £300K at arbitration.
  • I thought he showed a lot of potential, but wasn't outstanding on Saturday. I don't think we should be putting too much expectation omn his shoulders and let him develop at th eright pace.
  • Agree, thought he did well but wouldn't say he was outstanding, Ajdarevic did just as well.

I saw him in the youth cup game v Chelsea last year, thought he looked better than Muldoon and Gerard, but Palmer and Holmes-Dennis were the stand out players.

Didn't expect to see him come through as early as this season, perhaps next season at the same age that Cousins did.

The concern for me playing him with Cousins isn't their age but the lack of goals and assists they'd get between them. Perhaps a bit like Racon and Semedo, decent players for the level we're at but both naturally sit back.

With a 4 man midfield I'd probably play one of them with Ajdarevic in the middle. It'll be interesting to see what formation we play Saturday. Also good chance for Powell to see how we get on without Jackson.
  • No, our best kept secret is Joe Gomez......sshhhhh.......
  • Is he English?
  • Shocking haircut though
  • We don't have Poyet under contract? FFS

I'd like to think Gus would have known how good a player he was before an article on him in fairness.

    This 1000%
  • I thought well done to the lad, not easy not even in this day and age as I read the title of the thread and then thought oh..... silly bloke (me that is).
  • Interestingly eligible to play for Uraguay (like his old man) Spain (place of birth) and England where he has been raised. He has made apps for England under 16/17's

Looks like we have ourselves a janazai...

That's not me carried away he's only played a couple of first team games!
  • no contract announcement on him, reckon he is gone in the summer for £300K at arbitration.

this is the real worry. do we know when he is currently contracted until?

    This

watched the stream of the southampton fa youth cup game and he looked like, along with Holmes-Dennis and Edwards that they could play in any position on the pitch and still look absolutely quality and very assured.

Except we seem to have a policy of signing up our young talents quickly now. Me thinks something might be in the pipeline already, even though he's only played 1 game. I'd say after 5 games he'll be signed up on 3-4 year contract.
  • In terms of the Contract being agreed... Poyet himself may have been wondering "Am I in the Gaffer's plans" because he admitted in the Dressing Room Diaries he was getting frustrated at not being put on the bench etc... Now he's broken into the Team its a statement from the club saying that we want him to stay so he'll be more tempted as he'll feel like a First-Teamer here
  • i know this doesnt really mean anything but a lot of people were tweeting him saying 'cant wait to see you at the club for a long time' and 'you better sign a new contract' he was favouriting and retweeting them and it looked like he wanted to stay. saying that though if i was him and we got relegated id doubt id stay there, if we go down i think gus might by him and just loan him out for a few seasons
  • Someone posted on here the other day apparently he turned down a new contract?

I don't think the club ever confirmed the length of his pro deal, probably expires this season or next. Either way deserves a new deal in line with Cousins, Harriott etc.
  • We need him either way - as cash to fund our youth programmes (cynical approach) or as a player who can wrestle the midfield for us and help us push on.
