I was pleasantly surprised with the pitch today. It held together well, and didnt cut up much. Well done Paddy and the team (of groundsmen) for producing a playable pitch.
I was sitting close to the ground staff team when the players came out they were all shaking hands and patting each other on the back, must have been relieved to get the game on and very stressful under immense pressure and criticism....well done to them.
I thought the pitch looked pretty rough as I arrived about 2.30 but I think it had just had a heavy downpour on it. But the pitch held up and played pretty well. We won't have the luxury of 4 weeks to prepare it again, so we had all better hope for some drier and sunnier weather in the next month or two.
Glad we played etc but I thought the pitch was pretty pants. I was disappointed to say the least. With the month we've had "off" I was expecting more
I don't doubt a huge amount of work has gone into it but it shoes just how completely screwed it is
Time of year though, nothing really grows, & what would, certainly wouldn't have a chance under cover. The most important thing was to dry it out as much as possible so it wouldn't end up like a soiled nappy at the end of the game.
There can be no quick fixes on this at the end of the year, they need a whole new drainage system & whole new pitch laid. Not a patch up job & a quick re-seeding. I'm very surprised they are advertising pitch hire at the end of the season, as I would want this started as soon as the last ball is kicked, if I were Paddy.
