The best form of defence is attack

edited February 2014 in General Charlton
Apologies for starting a thread in relation to today's game but why do teams play so defensively when 1-0 up? Today's game proves that a lot of times it does not work!

  • Apology not accepted. There's already another thread on this and there'll be the post match views.
  • Sven (Powell's mentor) used to do it for England and it never worked. Totally agree, you go 1-0 up by attacking and because the opposition can't cope with it. Why change it?
  • DiscoCAFC 1/4 next Charlton manager. With an inspirational insight like that we are bound to stay up.

Exactly. I watched Everton a couple of times on Sky Sports and they play a passing game up top when 1-0 down and it's frustrating for the opposition because all they want to do is get it up top and attack.

Packing the defence gives them a real opportunity and a lot of times it does not work.

Especially when it's Dervite and Pritchard trying to do that.
  • Not making silly tackles around the box when Jordi Gomez is around would be better

If we weren't sitting so deep there wouldn't be the need to make silly tackles.
  • You can park the bus and not make those tackles, so keep trying to conflate the two

Yes, if you're good enough. But we're not. Parking the bus increases the chances of that happening, like it or not.
  • The team has no confidence so there's no way they are suddenly going to start passing it around away from home against a strong side.

We have to win some home games now. We've shown we can nick a few points away but the home form has to improve if we are to stay up.

Lets see what happens after a full week of training and an assessment of Wiggins' injury. We may have to loan in a left back if he's out.

    We just loaned one out!

Don't think we did in the end.
  • Had we held on for a few more minutes then this question wouldn't even be asked at all.
  • evina a left back!! hmm no ;)
  • Momentum and pressure.

    But we didn't
  • Cant remember when we lost because SCP "went for it" when we're winning.

Half pint empty mentality I'm afraid

How many points have we lost when he has brought Dervite on defensively. Not blaming DD just negative tatics

The answer to that before today was just 2 - when we conceded against Birmingham last year.
  • It proves nothing more than today it didn't work, and perhaps not even then if Dervite's introduction wasn't the reason we conceded.
  • By all accounts, we scored a goal that was a bit lucky. At no point did we play them off the pitch. At no point did we dominate. Wigan had plenty of shots after our goal in both halves. When they scored it was less to do with our substitutions and more to do with getting one of their 25+ shots on target. We did not suddenly begin defending deep.

I'd question whether we were able to sustain any period of attack. It sounded to me that we were effective on the break in the first half, but this was not sustainable. We lack the personnel to put a foot on the ball and control the tempo. Perhaps we can get someone in on loan to provide that. Without it, though, I'm afraid we may have too steep a hill to climb.

That's right, but now they've all invested in their pitchforks and torches they don't want to hear that.

True enough, and when you are inviting pressure by sitting too deep, you give yourself less time to make good decisions and often end up either hoofing the ball up field or giving it away out of blind panic. There has to be an outlet. If you put pressure on the other team and pin them back in their own half, then they aren't going to have too many chances to score.

Listening to the commentary, both Emma and Pete Finch were critical of the way we were sitting deeper and deeper back as the game progressed. IMO you shouldn't make changes that accentuate the problem, you should make changes to alleviate it. A tactical change was required. The defense needed to push up. Perhaps deploying a sweeper behind the two centre halves. These are the things that need to be worked on at Sparrows Lane, it has happened too many times now and too many leads have been lost in the same manner, this is where good coaches earn their money.

    .

    sorry, lookie... but, we did

not completely due to substitutions but there was a tactical switch or two that lead to us defending deeper.

first astrid was pushed up top on his own and reza pulled back, then later we played with nobody up top at all!

we were clearing our lines with NOBODY up front to try to get it and hold it

the away end was going mad and very vocal about it.
  • I wonder if Kermorgant would have helped the ball to stick up top.
